ALLEN&UNWIN READING GROUP NOTES Contents: About the book (2) About Jodi picoult (2) Q&A (3) Reviews (6) Suggested points for discussion (7) Other books by Jodi Picoult (8) About the book In this emotionally charged novel, Jodi Picoult delves beneath the surface of a small town to explore what it means to be different in our society. In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One fi nal incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents. Even those who were not inside the school that morning fi nd their lives in an upheaval, including Alex Cormier. The superior court judge assigned to the Houghton case, Alex—whose daughter, Josie, witnessed the events that unfolded—must decide whether or not to step down. She’s torn between presiding over the biggest case of her career and knowing that doing so will cause an even wider chasm in her relationship with her emotionally fragile daughter. Josie, meanwhile, claims she can’t remember what happened in the last fatal minutes of Peter’s rampage. Or can she? And Peter’s parents, Lacy and Lewis Houghton, ceaselessly examine the past to see what they might have said or done to compel their son to such extremes.

  • Item More Personal, More Unique, And, Therefore More Representative of the Experience of the Book Itself
Q&B Quill & Brush (301) 874-3200 Fax: (301)874-0824 E-mail: [email protected] Home Page: http://www.qbbooks.com A dear friend of ours, who is herself an author, once asked, “But why do these people want me to sign their books?” I didn’t have a ready answer, but have reflected on the question ever since. Why Signed Books? Reading is pure pleasure, and we tend to develop affection for the people who bring us such pleasure. Even when we discuss books for a living, or in a book club, or with our spouses or co- workers, reading is still a very personal, solo pursuit. For most collectors, a signature in a book is one way to make a mass-produced item more personal, more unique, and, therefore more representative of the experience of the book itself. Few of us have the opportunity to meet the authors we love face-to-face, but a book signed by an author is often the next best thing—it brings us that much closer to the author, proof positive that they have held it in their own hands. Of course, for others, there is a cost analysis, a running thought-process that goes something like this: “If I’m going to invest in a book, I might as well buy a first edition, and if I’m going to invest in a first edition, I might as well buy a signed copy.” In other words we want the best possible copy—if nothing else, it is at least one way to hedge the bet that the book will go up in value, or, nowadays, retain its value.

Word & World Volume 24, Number 3 Summer 2004 Reading Acts 16:6–40 on the Edges of the Navajo Reservation1 JEFFREY L. STALEY THE GIRL ON THE BORDERLANDS t is a hot July afternoon on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona, the kind of day that flakes off your skin like a fine alkaline dust. My three brothers and two sisters, along with our father and his wife, have met at Immanuel Mission for a family reunion. It is the first time all of us have been together since our mother’s death in 1984. Now it is eleven years later. At this precise moment I am standing beside my oldest brother, Rob, at the grave of Sarah Tsosie, a Navajo girl with whom we grew up. Thirty years ago we were both in love with Sarah. At the age of fourteen, Rob’s had been an open, recip- rocated affection. I ought to know. I used to follow Rob and Sarah around after dark to watch them kiss behind the cinder block dormitory. My love, on the other hand, was that sweet, secret, unrequited type commonly found in the hearts of jeal- ous, pesky little twelve-year-old brothers. The intervening thirty years have taken us both far away from Sarah and the reservation where we spent our childhood. But now we are side by side at Sarah’s hard-packed adobe grave, trying to say goodbye to someone—something—that was once simple, passionate, and young; full of grace and beauty. 1An earlier version of this essay appeared as “Changing Woman: Postcolonial Reflections on Acts16.6–40,” Journal for the Study of the New Testament 73 (1999) 113–135.
