The game is now played all over the world, and is growing in popularity every year. There sport has been played in the United States ever since Irish emigrants first came to its shores. Players advance the football, a spherical leather ball, up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands. In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar, signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net, signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. The majority of adult football and all minor and under matches last for 60 minutes, divided into two halves of 30 minutes, with the exception of senior inter-county games, which last for 70 minutes two halves of 35 minutes. Draws are decided by replays or by playing 20 minutes of extra time two halves of 10 minutes. Juniors have a half of 20 minutes or 25 minutes in some cases. Half-time lasts for about 5 or 10 minutes. Teams consist of fifteen players a goalkeeper, two corner backs, a full back, two wing backs, a centre back, two mid fielders, two wing forwards, a centre forward, two corner forwards and a full forward plus up to fifteen substitutes, of which five may be used. Each player is numbered 1—15, starting with the goalkeeper, who must wear a jersey colour different from that of his or her teammates. Up to fifteen substitutes may be named on the team sheet, number 16 usually being the reserve goalkeeper. Teams consist of fifteen players: a goalkeeper, three full backs, three half backs, two midfielders, three half forwards and three full forwards see diagram. The panel is made up of 24 —30 players and five substitutions are allowed per game. The O'Brien Press - Great Moments in Gaelic Football The Tyrone roar had Croke Park shaking on its hinges. The Meath team of the late 90s was just something serious and Trevor Giles oozed class with every act he performed for the two-time All-Ireland champions. One of the best set piece kickers around, his skill out the field and vision set him apart. He made the game look so simple. And so damn beautiful. Whatever about his disciplinary record, Diarmuid Connolly is one of the most talented men to ever pick up a football and his ability to demystify the game is simply unparalleled. The two-footed Connolly is the best passer in the country. His drilled deliveries are like heat-seeking missiles into the chests of team mates, his running power is frightening and his distance shooting is a sight behold. And one to just marvel at. And his seven points from play against Tyrone got those motors burning nicely. One of the best high-fielders the game has ever seen. One of the best passers the game has ever seen. One of the most effortless talents. Enda Muldoon, coined The Big Easy in Ballinderry, is arguably the finest footballer to never even appear in an All-Ireland final with his county. He has God-like status up north and it is not without reason. His brain works so much faster than his counterparts that he's already playing the next game whilst pulling the strings of the current one. A passer, a shooter, a midfielder. A delicious talent. A once-in- a-generation player, every county needs a Maurice Fitzgerald to make football living worthwhile. Talent like his can do nothing but inspire the next pack of hopefuls and warm the hearts of the rest of them. He was a gem of a footballer. A complete footballer. It seemed that everything he did was made for a highlights reel. Never has a man had such command over a football. He could turn on a shoestring, and turn you again, and find targets with nothing to work with. He was tough, game and oh, so talented, came up with answers under serious pressure time and time again. A class act. At this time of the year my column is usually devoted to what I call the good, the bad and the ugly moments from the the All-Ireland championship. U sually, however, the article ends up being too negative. So I've decided to break with tradition this year and pick my 20 outstanding moments from this summer's enthralling championship. It was a memorable series for lots of reasons. I make no apologies for including so many Dublin moments on the list. They did make history after all and deservingly so. No contest really — they were the story of the football championship. They secured their fifth title in a row and a seventh in this decade. Unbeaten in 36 consecutive championship games they now have ten players with seven All-Ireland medals. Probably the greatest team of all time — who knows! Dublin's magic 13 minutes of total football at the start of the second half against Mayo in the All-Ireland semi-final. They scored without reply — it was Gaelic football at its very best. I have never seen any other team in the modern era come even close to matching what they produced. It was orgasmic football. Master-minded the five-in-a-row and between and he has endured just one defeat in championship football. His record is played 47, won 43, drew three and lost one. Speaks for itself. True, there may have been better quality finals in the past but this match had everything one demands from a proper sporting contest. It was exciting, enthralling and entertaining. They were brilliant individual displays, outstanding scores, lots of talking points and the result in the balance up until the final kick. I'm simply running out of superlatives to describe the Dublin captain. He has single-handedly transformed the goalkeeping role with his kick-out strategy. His composure and leadership are second to none. He saved a penalty in the drawn All-Ireland final and made a vital save from Stephen O'Brien in the replay. And he has now captained Dublin to six All-Ireland wins. I think he will get an All-Star this year. This round 2 encounter in Croke Park was probably the best match in this year's championship. This was essentially an old style traditional shoot-out. It was a roller-coaster contest which featured brilliant scores and the draw was a fair outcome as neither team deserved to lose.
