lifelines Spring 2014 3 For those living in New Jersey of course, he’s known for much more. Cory was Mayor of Newark, New Jersey for several years where he focused on reducing crime and encouraging economic development. He was known for his personal involvement with constituents, especially through social media.

In 2013, he was elected to the New Jersey senate, where this past January he co- sponsored the Respect for Marriage Act to require the US Federal Government to recognize the validity of same-sex marriages.

But PETA recognized him for his long- time and work on several companion animal issues, including rescuing dogs and helping to build a state- of-the-art animal shelter. His journey to vegetarianism may sound a bit familiar (a la Brendan Brazier): he wanted to see how it could improve his athleticism and it had such a positive impact on him, he never went back.

What is unique about Cory as a politician is his openness about his vegetarianism. It is no secret that Mr. Booker is vegetarian. Fortunately, this is becoming more and more common in the GTA as well. Here at the TVA, we’ve been fortunate to make allies with vegetarians at City Hall such as Toronto councillor Glen De Baeremaeker Veg PROFILE and Markham councillor Valerie Burke. This time around, our Strategic Plan was not only focused on inspiring people to go vegetarian. We are also focusing on helping people stay vegetarian by making sure they’re lives are joyous and satisfying. You made this possible at the 6th Totally Fabulous Vegan Bake-Off.

On Sunday, March 23rd, more than 500 people packed a room at Artscape’s Daniels Spectrum Cultural Hub and indulged in a truly fabulous celebration of vegan desserts. This community-building event reminds people that vegan living is anything but dull and bland, and allows them to participate (either by tasting, baking or both!) in a delicious food competition just as omnivores do.

When attempting to research why people lapse from vegetarianism and go back to eating animal products, we’ve found two of the biggest challenges are craving their favourite foods, and not being able to partake in social celebrations as they did before. Thanks to your support, new vegans like Dane were able to overcome these obstacles at the Vegan Bake-Off.

“Every day I wake up, I now realize how blessed I am to be a vegan in Toronto.” he says. “I can look into the eyes of my non-vegan friends and say, with great conviction, that I am missing out on absolutely nothing. In fact, after attending the Totally Fabulous Vegan Bake-Off, I’d argue they are the ones missing out. No matter what your diet or lifestyle, this experience is eye-opening, wonderful and delicious.”

12 lifelines Spring 2014 YOUR Water FOOTPRINT

BY SALLY GRANDE, Long-time Leader of Durham Veg

We have heard for years that animal farming is a major pollutant. A study heralded in the NY Times quotes a 2012 study in the journal, Ecosystems, from the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Have a look at these comparisons per ton of water- rich versus the water used in the breeding of animals for food:

BEETS: 52,000 gallons BEEF:145,000 gallons VEGGIES: 11,300 gallons BUTTER: 122,800 gallons ROOT VEGGIES: 4,200 gallons PORK: 121,000 gallons FRUITS: 38,800 gallons

These fi gures do not include the refrigeration required in the transport of animal products nor the additional 132 gallons of water per carcass required in the slaughtering process.

Alfalfa (cultivated for cattle feed) in California, a currently drought-affl icted area, is being grown and exported to Asia.

Alfalfa growers are now exporting 100 billion gallons of water per year around the world in the form of alfalfa because of profi t as more Asians are adopting the American-style, meat-heavy diet. The disastrous health results are likely a generation away.

Going vegetarian reduces a person’s food-related water footprint by almost 60 percent.

Going vegan is even better. Eating as many locally grown fruits and vegetables as possible is even better.

In Oshawa, a courageous restaurateur, Carol of The Table Restaurant, has hatched a plan to offer locally grown, fresh vegetables and herbs to downtown residents for free. She and her army of volunteers will dig and plant a garden almost anywhere. All agree to donate a portion of the produce back to a centrally located “barter market” where food can be exchanged or made available at no cost.

DurhamVeg, the easternmost arm of TVA, will be managing one of Carol’s gardens. We look forward to this opportunity, and further, we hope to rekindle the fl ame of home cooking for folks who have become addicted to cheap fast food.
