INTRODUCTION Le véganisme est un mouvement de justice sociale luttant pour la fin du spécisme et pour la libération animale. Il se traduit au quotidien par la non-consommation de tous produits d’origine animale et le refus de l’exploitation animale dans des domaines tels que le divertissement (cirques, zoos, monte à cheval, delphinariums, etc.), les cosmétiques, le milieu médical, l’habillement (cuir, laine, daim, soie, etc.), le commerce des animaux de compagnie, etc. Le spécisme est la discrimination fondée sur l’espèce. Par analogie avec le racisme et le sexisme, le spécisme désigne l’idéologie qui considère que la vie et les intérêts des animaux peuvent être méprisés uniquement parce qu’ils sont d’une autre espèce. Le spécisme est indéfendable car les humains ne sont pas les seuls à ressentir des émotions, et pour cette raison nous devons respecter la vie et les intérêts des autres êtres sensibles qui partagent cette planète avec nous. Quelques définitions clefs : Végétarien : individu qui ne mange pas de chair animale mais mange néanmoins les produits issus du règne animal. Il ne mange donc pas de viande ni de poisson mais consomme du lait, des œufs. Végétalien : individu qui ne mange pas d’aliment d’origine animale. Cela concerne la chair animale mais également le lait, les oeufs et le miel. Végane : individu qui boycotte les produits issus de l'exploitation animale dans tous les domaines (alimentation, habillement, cosmétiques, loisirs). Pour des questions éthiques Le mouvement végane, qui devient de plus en plus présent au sein de notre société, ne souhaite évidemment pas que les animaux aient les mêmes droits que les humains. Ni même que les animaux aient les mêmes droits entre eux. Chaque être est différent et les besoins également. Le mouvement végane souhaite que les intérêts de tous les individus, quelle que soit leur espèce, soient pris en considération Dans une approche spéciste, beaucoup de questions restent sans réponse : n’est-il pas contradictoire d’aimer un chien et de manger un cochon ?, pourquoi la vache est-elle sacrée chez les hindou-e-s alors qu’elle est exploitée dans notre société occidentale ?, pourquoi boit-on du lait de vache et non du lait de gorille ?, pourquoi porte-t-on de la peau de vache à nos pieds ? etc. Les personnes véganes se sont toutes posé la question un jour. Il faut savoir que la majorité des personnes aujourd’hui véganes étaient omnivores auparavant. Nous avons donc tou-te-s eu la même éducation, et entendu à maintes reprises « il faut manger de la viande pour les protéines et des produits laitiers pour le calcium ». Pourtant, des personnes ont fait le choix de ne plus exploiter les animaux et cette partie détaille les raisons d'un tel choix. L’alimentation La viande et le poisson Chaque année, plus de 64 milliards d'animaux terrestres et plus de 1000 milliards d'animaux marins sont tués pour la consommation humaine. Les conditions d'élevage sont une source de souffrance terrible pour des animaux qui passent leur courte existence enfermés, mutilés (castration à vif, coupure des queues et becs), parfois sans même apercevoir la lumière du jour, pour finalement être abattus. Les poissons, quant à eux, sont remontés par milliers hors de l'eau et agonisent asphyxiés ou sont éviscérés vivants. Aucune raison ne peut justifier un tel massacre, d'autant plus qu'il est possible d'avoir une alimentation équilibrée en tous points sans consommer de produits d'origine animale. Si le veau est un mâle, il sera soit abattu immédiatement, soit vendu pour l’industrie du veau et tué après quelques semaines de vie d’isolement, ou encore sera vendu pour l’industrie du bœuf et tué dès qu’il aura atteint un poids rentable, aux environs d’un an. Si c’est une femelle, elle suivra le même destin que sa mère. C’est à tort que nous pensons que les vaches produisent du lait en continu, elles le font seulement lorsqu’elles sont fécondées. Dans la majorité des cas, la mère sera inséminée pour donner au monde une fois par année. Lorsque les vaches ne sont plus assez productives, elles sont envoyées à l’abattoir, alors qu’elles n’ont que 5 ans (une vache peut vivre jusqu’à 25 ans). Même si l’élevage est familial ou labélisé bio, les vaches subissent le même destin. Les œufs Les poules et les poulets modernes ont fait l’objet d’une sélection génétique intense. Alors qu’une poule sauvage pond au maximum 60 œufs par an, les poules des élevages modernes en pondent plus de 300. La poule pondeuse a été, à sa naissance, sélectionnée. Avant l’éclosion, on ne sait pas encore si cet œuf fécondé donnera naissance à un poussin mâle ou un poussin femelle. Si c’est une femelle, elle deviendra « poule pondeuse ». Si c’est un mâle, il sera soit broyé, soit gazé (car la race pour les poulets de chair n’est pas la même). La « poule pondeuse » sera abattue à l’âge de 18 mois, lorsqu’elle n’est plus assez productive. Pour des questions écologiques Le régime omnivore est beaucoup plus énergivore que le régime végétalien. En effet, pour produire un kilo de viande, il faut d’abord cultiver le foin, les céréales et le soja qui permettront d’alimenter l’animal, et lui fournir de l’eau. La surface au sol qu’il est nécessaire pour produire la nourriture pour les animaux d’élevage est considérable. Ensuite, ces animaux sont abattus, découpés, emballés : des processus qui ne font qu’augmenter nos gaz à effet de serre. Il faut ajouter à cela les transports entre chaque étape. De soja, par exemple : la Suisse en importe aujourd’hui dix fois plus qu’en 1990. […] Or les méthodes de production du soja sont tout sauf durables. Il est souvent cultivé sur des terrains déboisés dans des forêts tropicales. En outre, les fourrages concentrés occupent de plus en plus de terres agricoles qui pourraient fournir des aliments végétaux pour la consommation humaine. (OFEV, 2012) De plus, avec 28% de l’impact total, l’alimentation contribue le plus aux atteintes causées par les consommateurs. La viande et les autres produits d’origine animale viennent en tête (OFEV, 2013) ». L’élevage en quelques chiffres : - Il est responsable de 14,3% des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES), c’est plus que l’ensemble des transports réunis ; - 80% de la déforestation en Amazonie ; - Un végétalien émet 2.5 fois moins de GES par son alimentation qu’un omnivore occidental ; - Deux tiers des terres agricoles dans le monde sont consacrées à l’élevage ou à la production d’aliments pour le bétail ; - En France, il faut environ 8250 litres d’eau pour produire la nourriture quotidienne d’un omnivore, 3600 litres pour produire celle d’un végétalien. Vous trouverez des informations supplémentaires sur viande.info Les cosmétiques et produits ménagers Depuis 2013, il est interdit de tester les cosmétiques sur les animaux dans l’ensemble de l’Union Européenne. Seulement, la majorité des ingrédients utilisés pour la cosmétique se retrouvent également dans les produits pharmaceutiques, les produits ménagers, l’alimentation etc., qui eux ne sont pas soumis à cette réglementation. Autrement dit, cette loi n’est pas d’une grande utilité et il faut donc se fier aux labels prévus pour (partie développée plus loin dans le guide). L’habillement Cuir «Matière première» qualifiée de «noble», le cuir n’est autre que la peau d’un être sensible qu’il aura fallu tuer et dépecer. Considéré à tort comme un simple sous-produit d’abattoir, le cuir constitue une industrie à part entière. Sa fabrication cache de grandes souffrances et des désastres écologiques. La courte existence des animaux d’élevage n’est qu’une succession de mauvais traitements. Les animaux sont conduits à l’abattoir dans des conditions de transport souvent monstrueuses : déshydratation, crises cardiaques, écrasement, os cassés. Enfin, ils sont traînés de force dans l’abattoir, affolés par l’odeur du sang, puis étourdis et égorgés à la chaîne.
