About the Fire and Fuels Program

The Nez Perce – Clearwater National Forests Fire and Fuels Management Program is one of the most diverse and robust programs in the Nation, and one of the busiest high complexity fire programs in the Northern Rockies. Spread over six duty stations and ten programs, the full spectrum of fire management resources includes: multiple Type 4 and Type 6 engines, a 20- person , multiple 10-person suppression modules, a wildland fire-use module, , , tanker base, fuels, and an interagency dispatch center. Management strategies range from full suppression to resource benefit, working with our interagency partners to achieve objectives. The Forest has an active fuels program with a 100+MMBF timber target and 12,000+ acre fuels target, with projects ranging from mastication and machine work to a three-season prescribed burn program in both landscape and harvest unit settings. Come work with us! There are two types of positions being advertised: Open Continuous Register (OCR†) and Single Vacancy- Fire Hire Event ‡ positions. OCR announcements allow hiring managers to fill positions from an open register and have variable dates when referral lists will be pulled, so please call the Program manager of the position you are interested in for timeline details. Eligibility and qualifications will be verified when there is a vacancy for the location and grade for which you applied. The Single Vacancy Fire Hire positions have a fixed application period; for these positions that period is 10/26-11/13/20. All announcements are open to the public, but most require NWCG qualifications. All positions are posted on USA Jobs (www.usajobs.gov) and can be found with their announcement number or by searching on the Duty Location.

Grangeville Air Center (Duty Location Grangeville, ID) CURRENT VACANCIES ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW

The Grangeville Air Center, located at the Idaho County Airport, currently hosts a Helitack Module, Smoke Jumper Program, Air Attack Platform with ATGS, two light fixed wing Aerial Observer Platforms, and a SEAT base with two Single Engine Airtankers. Due to its unique location, the Air Center supports fire operations in three different USFS Regions (Region 1, Region 4 and Region 6) as well as BLM, BIA and State & Private Cooperator fire operations in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The Helitack Module consists of 26 personnel that manage and staff three exclusive use helicopters, two Bell 407’s and one Type 1 Large Fire Support helicopter. Additionally, the module manages Call When Needed (CWN) helicopters throughout the season. Due to the size and predominantly roadless nature of this Forest, helicopters play heavily into fire management planning. In recent years, this crew has averaged 30+ initial attacks throughout the Mandatory Availability Periods. The helicopter program also supports many other functions outside of fire suppression to include; prescribed fire, lookout staffing & maintenance, back country airstrip maintenance, slinging such things as: radio equipment, bridge timbers, building materials, cattle troughs, fencing, , and occasionally fish into remote lakes! The Grangeville program is comprised of 30 Smokejumpers staffing a Dehavilland DH-6C Twin Otter. The range and speed of aircraft allow the program to service much of regions 1,6, and 4 with initial attack firefighters, extended attack firefighters and paracargo supply delivery. Grangeville Smokejumpers participate in all levels of supervision for local, regional and national and all-risk incidents. Additionally, the program provides a workforce skilled in fuels mitigation, prescribed fire, hazard tree mitigation, tree climbing for timber stand improvement and hazard mitigation and any other needs that are identified. The Tanker Base consists of 1 full time Tanker Base Manager and 2-3 temporary hire personnel. We manage two state contracted single engine air tankers (SEAT). The base is a bulk retardant base, which requires us doing our own mixing and loading of LC-95A-FX retardant. During high fire activity, there have been as many as 12 aircraft reloading out of the base at one time. We are responsible for managing the US Forest Service ramp which can include the SEAT aircraft as well as multiple Air Attack Platforms, Jump aircraft and a variety of other light fixed wing aircraft. Community Information: Grangeville, ID is a full-service community with a hospital, two grocery stores, and multiple restaurants, located on the Camas Prairie in north-Central Idaho. The greater Grangeville and Idaho County areas are well known for world-class outdoor recreation. Within 75 miles of Grangeville are several whitewater rafting rivers including the Selway, Snake, Salmon, Clearwater and Lochsa. Additionally, these rivers are known for their abundant fisheries including cutthroat and thriving inland Salmon and Steelhead populations. Dworshak Reservoir is located nearby with ample recreational boating opportunities and an abundant kokanee population. Also, within 75 miles are three wilderness areas including the Selway-Bitterroot, Gospel Hump and Hells Canyon Wilderness with ample locations for elk and deer hunting in addition to backcountry hiking and camping.
