1.0 TRAFFIC SUMMAYY During the month of May 2007, all operational airports (taken together) handled 105.49 thousand aircraft movements (excludes General Aviation movements), 9.94 million passengers and 140.09 thousand tonnes of freight. The details are given in the table below. The detailed traffic analysis is given in the succeeding paragraphs. 2.0 AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: 2.1 TRAFFIC TRENDS: MAY 2007 Vis-à-vis MAY 2006 2.1.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in May 2007 has shown an increase of 28.3 per cent as compared to the aircraft movement handled in May 2006 (referred to Annexure-I). Major increases are at (Annexure-IIC): • Chennai 29.2% • Ahmedabad 32.9% • Bangalore 32.5% • Nagpur 87.3% • Hyderabad 36.0% • Jaipur 104.6% • Trivandrum 46.1% • Bhubaneshwar 176.3% • Cochin (CIAL) 32.0% • Port Blair 76.6% Higher growth in traffic at above airports is due to increased operation by low cost airlines and increase in frequency of existing airlines. Number of foreign airlines started operations at international airports other than Mumbai and Delhi airports. 2.1.2 INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The international aircraft movement has increased by 12.9 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIA. Major increases are at (Annexure-IIA): • Chennai 18.3% • Trichy 63.3% • Kolkata 14.8% • Amritsar 33.9% • Trivandrum 31.4% • Mumbai(MIAL) 13.3% • Ahmedabad 27.4% • Lucknow 29.8% Air Arabia started its operation at Trivandrum Airport from December 2006 and at Jaipur Airport from May 2006. Introduction of Flight by Air India Express, Air Arabia and Air France at Chennai Airport from November 2006 is also contributed to higher growth. The higher growth in traffic at other airports is due to increase in frequency by existing Airlines / start of operations by new airlines. 2.1.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The domestic aircraft movements increased remarkably by 32.3 per cent during May 2007. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIB. Major increases are at (Annexure-IIB): • Chennai 32.7% • Jaipur 127.2% • Bangalore 35.6% • Cochin (CIAL) 52.8% • Hyderabad 43.6% • Varanasi 115.1% • Trivandrum 66.2% • Port Blair 76.6% • Nagpur 102.3% • Coimbatore 41.7% Low cost airlines namely Air Deccan, SpiceJet & Go Air and other existing airlines have increased their frequencies of operations in the existing sectors and started number of new sectors in all regions. Low cost airlines namely Indigo Airlines and Indus Air have started their operations from 4th August 2006 and 28th December 2006 respectively. Major declines are at (Annexure-IIB): • Calicut 16.9% • Aurangabad 14.7% 2.1.4 MONTH-WISE A/C MOVEMENTS TREND: Month-wise Aircraft Movements Traffic Trend has shown in the chart below. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure – I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIC. 2.2.2. INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The international aircraft movements have shown an increase of 13.4 per cent during April – May 2007-08. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIA. Major increases are at (Annexure-IIA): • Chennai 16.9% • Ahmedabad 19.0% • Trivandrum 32.5% • Mumbai(MIAL) 15.5% • Amritsar 44.1% • Cochin(CIAL) 14.1% • Jaipur 39.7% • Trichy 60.1% The higher growth in traffic at the above airports is because of increase in frequency by existing Airlines / start of operations by new Airlines. 2.2.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: The domestic aircraft movements have shown an increase of 31.3 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIB. Major increases are at (Annexure-IIB): • Chennai 36.6% • Jaipur 107.4% • Bangalore 34.7% • Cochin(CIAL) 63.8% • Hyderabad 47.8% • Bhubaneshwar 169.7% • Trivandrum 75.1% • Coimbatore 43.1% • Guwahati 49.1% • Mangalore 42.7% • Nagpur 81.0% • Port Blair 77.7% The main reason for increase in growth rate is due to contribution of low cost airlines and increase in number of sectors by existing domestic airlines. TRAFFIC TREND: MAY 2007 vis-à-vis MAY 2006 3.1.1 TOTAL PASSENGERS TRAFFIC: The total passenger traffic has shown an increase of 26.7 per cent as compared to May 2006. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIC. Major increases are at (Annexure –IIIC): • Bangalore 43.2% • Varanasi 77.2% • Kolkata 29.6% • Bhubaneshwar 177.0% • Nagpur 43.7% • Port Blair 72.5% • Guwahati 44.1% • Raipur 154.0% • Jaipur 110.0% • Imphal 93.3% • Mangalore 60.1% • Ranchi 99.0% The main reason in higher growth in traffic is due to the contribution of low cost airlines / no frill airlines. 3.1.2 INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC: The international passenger traffic has registered an increase of 17.0 per cent during May 2007 as compared to passenger traffic handled in May 2006. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIA. Major increases are at (Annexure –IIIA) : • Bangalore 33.4% • Calicut 38.4% • Kolkata 26.4% • Jaipur 73.9% • Hyderabad 24.4% • Amritsar 29.7% • Ahmedabad 39.8% • Cochin(CIAL) 20.0% The overall increase in the traffic during reviewing period May 2007 may be attributed to competitive international fare between India and different international destinations. Remarkable increase in passenger traffic at Jaipur airport is due to introduction of daily service by Air Arabia. Better international linkages of Indian traffic with world traffic have also contributed in higher growth in international passenger traffic.
