1.0 TRAFFIC SUMMAYY

During the month of May 2007, all operational airports (taken together) handled 105.49 thousand aircraft movements (excludes General Aviation movements), 9.94 million passengers and 140.09 thousand tonnes of freight. The details are given in the table below.

The above table reveals that the aircraft movements, passengers and freight traffic increased by 28.3 per cent, 26.7 per cent and 11.2 per cent respectively during May 2007 over traffic handled during May 2006.

The detailed traffic analysis is given in the succeeding paragraphs.

2.0 AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

2.1 TRAFFIC TRENDS: MAY 2007 Vis-à-vis MAY 2006

2.1.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The total aircraft movements (International and Domestic) handled in May 2007 has shown an increase of 28.3 per cent as compared to the aircraft movement handled in May 2006 (referred to Annexure-I).

Major increases are at (Annexure-IIC):

• Chennai 29.2% • Ahmedabad 32.9% • Bangalore 32.5% • Nagpur 87.3% • Hyderabad 36.0% • Jaipur 104.6% • Trivandrum 46.1% • Bhubaneshwar 176.3% • Cochin (CIAL) 32.0% • Port Blair 76.6%

Higher growth in traffic at above airports is due to increased operation by low cost airlines and increase in frequency of existing airlines. Number of foreign airlines started operations at international airports other than and airports.

2.1.2 INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The international aircraft movement has increased by 12.9 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIA.

Major increases are at (Annexure-IIA):

• Chennai 18.3% • Trichy 63.3% • Kolkata 14.8% • Amritsar 33.9% • Trivandrum 31.4% • Mumbai(MIAL) 13.3% • Ahmedabad 27.4% • Lucknow 29.8%

Air Arabia started its operation at Trivandrum Airport from December 2006 and at Jaipur Airport from May 2006. Introduction of Flight by Express, Air Arabia and Air France at Chennai Airport from November 2006 is also contributed to higher growth. The higher growth in traffic at other airports is due to increase in frequency by existing Airlines / start of operations by new airlines.

2.1.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The domestic aircraft movements increased remarkably by 32.3 per cent during May 2007. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIB.

• Chennai 32.7% • Jaipur 127.2% • Bangalore 35.6% • Cochin (CIAL) 52.8% • Hyderabad 43.6% • Varanasi 115.1% • Trivandrum 66.2% • Port Blair 76.6% • Nagpur 102.3% • Coimbatore 41.7%

Low cost airlines namely , SpiceJet & Go Air and other existing airlines have increased their frequencies of operations in the existing sectors and started number of new sectors in all regions. Low cost airlines namely Indigo Airlines and Indus Air have started their operations from 4th August 2006 and 28th December 2006 respectively.

2.2 TRAFFIC TREND: APRIL – MAY 2007-08 vis à-vis APRIL – MAY 2006-07

2.2.1 TOTAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS: -

The total aircraft movements witnessed an increase of 27.5 per cent i.e., from 162.40 thousand movements to 207.07 thousand movements during the period April- May 2007-08 as compared to the aircraft movement handled during April – May 2006-07. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure – I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure-IIC.

2.2.2. INTERNATIONAL AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The international aircraft movements have shown an increase of 13.4 per cent during April – May 2007-08. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIA.

Major increases are at (Annexure-IIA):

• Chennai 16.9% • Ahmedabad 19.0% • Trivandrum 32.5% • Mumbai(MIAL) 15.5% • Amritsar 44.1% • Cochin(CIAL) 14.1% • Jaipur 39.7% • Trichy 60.1%

The higher growth in traffic at the above airports is because of increase in frequency by existing Airlines / start of operations by new Airlines.

2.2.3 DOMESTIC AIRCRAFT MOVEMENTS:

The domestic aircraft movements have shown an increase of 31.3 per cent during the period under review. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIB.

The main reason for increase in growth rate is due to contribution of low cost airlines and increase in number of sectors by existing domestic airlines.

3.0 PASSENGERS TRAFFIC: -

3.1. TRAFFIC TREND: MAY 2007 vis-à-vis MAY 2006

3.1.1 TOTAL PASSENGERS TRAFFIC:

The total passenger traffic has shown an increase of 26.7 per cent as compared to May 2006. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIC.

Major increases are at (Annexure –IIIC):

• Bangalore 43.2% • Varanasi 77.2% • Kolkata 29.6% • Bhubaneshwar 177.0% • Nagpur 43.7% • Port Blair 72.5% • Guwahati 44.1% • Raipur 154.0% • Jaipur 110.0% • Imphal 93.3% • Mangalore 60.1% • Ranchi 99.0%

The main reason in higher growth in traffic is due to the contribution of low cost airlines / no frill airlines.

3.1.2 INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

The international passenger traffic has registered an increase of 17.0 per cent during May 2007 as compared to passenger traffic handled in May 2006. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIA.

Major increases are at (Annexure –IIIA) :

• Bangalore 33.4% • Calicut 38.4% • Kolkata 26.4% • Jaipur 73.9% • Hyderabad 24.4% • Amritsar 29.7% • Ahmedabad 39.8% • Cochin(CIAL) 20.0%

The overall increase in the traffic during reviewing period May 2007 may be attributed to competitive international fare between India and different international destinations. Remarkable increase in passenger traffic at Jaipur airport is due to introduction of daily service by Air Arabia. Better international linkages of Indian traffic with world traffic have also contributed in higher growth in international passenger traffic.

3.1.3 DOMESTIC PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

The domestic passenger traffic in May 2007 touched to 7.61 million from 5.86 million in May 2006 registering an increase of 29.9 per cent. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIB.

High growth of domestic passenger traffic is mainly due to contribution of the new traffic generated by no frills airlines.

3.2.1 TOTAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

The total passenger traffic handled during April–May 2007-08 reached to 19.30 million from 15.17 million, which has shown an increase of 27.2 per cent as compared to the passenger handled during April–May 2006-07. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure–I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIC.

3.2.2 INTERNATIONAL PASSENGER TRAFFIC:

The international passenger traffic has registered an increase of 17.8 per cent at all airports taken together during the period under review. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure–I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IIIA.

4.0 FREIGHT TRAFFIC

4.1 TRAFFIC TREND: MAY 2007 vis-à-vis MAY 2006

4.1.1 TOTAL FREIGHT TRAFFIC: -

The total freight traffic (International and Domestic) handled has registered a growth of 11.2 per cent as compared to the freight handled during May 2006. Growth rates of different categories of airports are mentioned in Annexure –I and airport-wise details are given in Annexure –IVC.

The total freight traffic increased to 278.12 thousand tonnes from 250.36 thousand tonnes, which registered an increase of 11.1 per cent during April – May 2007-08 as compared to freight traffic handled in April – May 2006-07. The share of private airlines on the domestic sector has further improved to 81.0%, 78.0% and 72.4% in aircraft movement, passenger and freight traffic respectively during May 2007. The overall share of private airlines for the month of May 2007 was 78.0 per cent in the domestic passengers’ traffic. Percentage share in domestic traffic has been shown graphically in the chart 5.1. The overall share of Low Cost Airlines for the month of May 2007 was 35.1 per cent in the domestic passengers’ traffic compared to 27.6 per cent in May 2006. The detailed Airport- wise percentage share of private airlines in domestic traffic is given in the table 5.1.

The dispersion of air traffic is given in terms of percentage handled at different categories of airports in the country and is shown in the table- 6.1. The dispersion of traffic is depicted in the chart 6.1 for the month of May 2007. The table 6.1 shows that Sixteen international airports has major share in the country’s air traffic i.e. 80.22 per cent, 87.75 per cent and 97.16 per cent in aircraft movements, passengers and freight traffic respectively.

7.0 REGIONWISE TREND AND SHARE IN TOTAL TRAFFIC:

7.1 REGION WISE TREND:

The highest growth in total aircraft movement has been recorded by North East Region (48.7%) followed by Southern Region (34.8%) during the reporting month May 2007. Similarly, in total passengers, North East Region has recorded robust growth of 47.3% over April 2006 and followed by Eastern Region (39.7%) and Southern Region (33.1%). The growth rates of Western and Northern Regions were lower than the all India growth rate (26.7%) during May 2007 over May 2006. Eastern Region (18.5%) recorded highest growth in total freight handling followed by Southern (15.1%) and Western (11.7%) during the reporting month May 2007. North East Region’s freight handling has gone down by 18.8%, which is contrary to the growth in passengers and aircraft movement. Category wise and Region wise trends in traffic during May 2007 and for the period April – May 2007-08 vis-à-vis 2006-07 may be visualized in the annexure –V.

7.2 REGION WISE SHARE:

Southern Region is leading in percentage share in all categories in traffic except in domestic passengers and freight, but its total freight share is almost equal to Western Region. Western and Northern Regions share in total traffic have been decreased during May 2007 compared to May 2006 for all categories of traffic. It reveals from the annexure-V that the Southern Region has increased shares substantially by eating the share of Western Region. Category wise and Region wise share in traffic during May 2007 and for the period April – May 2007-08 vis-à-vis 2006-07 may be visualized in the annexure –V.
