It all began when Graham Layton and Z a ka Rahmatulla having re t i red from their highly successful business careers decided to give back to the country, which had been so good to them, something of substance. Beginning with a humble mobile clinic in Tando Bago, in November 19 8 5 , LRBT has grown since then to 14 hospitals and 27 primary eye care clinics treating over 1.3 million eye patients this ye a r. No other NGO touches and i m p roves the lives of more people than LRBT.

The Founders left behind 4 guiding principles

■ Treatment and surgery at LRBT would be absolutely free so that no man, woman or child would become blind simply because they could not afford treatment. ■ Charity would not mean second rate treatment. ■ No discrimination would be made on the basis of religion, language or gender. ■ Patients would be treated with compassion and dignity. In this Revi e w, we will be focusing on how LRBT has de l i ve r ed the second of these principles.

One third of Pakistan's population lives below the pove rty line. A small medical eye emerg e n c y can turn into a nightmare for a family of six. No m o n ey, little or no sight – very little hope. A descent into blindness would be their fate joining 1.5 million people who are already blind.

Anything less than the best would not be acceptable. A common, curable malady - CA TAR AC T Eighty per cent of blindness in Pakistan is curable. Two t h i rds of it is due to cataract which is caused by opacification of the natural lens of the eye. It can be c u red through an operation in which the opaque natural lens is replaced with an inert artificial lens. This surg e r y can be done manually (ECCE) or thro u g h Phacoemulsification which re q u i res sophisticated equipment. Both give good results but as the latter is s u t u reless, it results in quicker re c ove r y. A later d evelopment of manual surgery which is also suture l e s s is Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) which also results in quick re c overy at a fraction of the cost of P h a c o e m u l s i f i c a t i o n .

LRBT has equipped all its Te rtiary & Secondary hospitals with Phacoemulsifiers. We are also a centre of exc e l l e n c e for SICS and the major training centre in the c o u n t r y.

Sometimes, the posterior capsule in which the a rtificial lens is implanted opacifies. This is cure d t h rough the use of YAG Lasers which are ava i l a b l e at all our Te rtiary & Secondary hospitals. Ca t a s t r ophe co n t a i n e d

70-year old Gulab Jan, resident of Balakot, Distt. Mansehra, lost her 29 year old grandson in the October Earthquake along with several near relatives. Two weeks later, she lost her husband as well when their temporary shelter caught fire.

The tragedy was overwhelming and to compound it all her vision started to deteriorate. With no money and completely devastated, she was brought to LRBT's temporary hospital in Mansehra where she was diagnosed with cataract in both eyes. She was operated on her right eye and an IOL was implanted, whereby, her vision was restored. She is now looking forward to the surgery of her left eye and will gain complete vision. The scars of a tragic incident remain but her gratitude to LRBT is for lifetime. Sl o w but sure prog re s s i o n tow a r ds blindness - GL AU C O M A Glaucoma is a group of diseases that can damage the optic nerve resulting in loss of visual field which can lead to incurable blindness if not detected and a r rested in time.

Consequently all patients, 30 and above, visiting our hospitals have their intra ocular pre s s u re (IOP), a primary indicator of glaucoma, checked with a P n e u m o t o n o m e t e r. If needed other diagnostic tools such as Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer or the latest generation Fre q u e n c y Doubling Technology (FDT ) Matrix are used for high risk patients as is the state- o f - t h e - a rt Optical C o h e rence To m o g r a p h y (OCT) which enables the assessment of the state of the nerve fibre and the optic disc.

Treatment can be medical, s u rgical or with the latest Diode Lasers. Sight free of cost

Muhammad Riaz, 48 year old, resident of Shershah, is a tailor by profession. He earns a pittance to support a family of thirteen members.

For 20 long years, he battled redness of eyes, pain and failing vision. At long last, in January 2006, he came to LRBT's Korangi Hospital for proper evaluation of his disease. He underwent a detailed examination, which included Visual Field Analysis and OCT. It was diagnosed that he had lost vision in his right eye while his left eye was severely damaged due to Glaucoma.

After medication, he was operated and his vision has been saved from further deterioration. A stitch in time has saved fourteen people from being torn apart by poverty. Riaz is back at work. Dr eaded disease - DI A B E T I C RE T I N O P ATH Y Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye disorder caused by diabetes and may lead to blindness of both eye s . Patients are diagnosed clinically with Fundus Fluro e s c e n Angiography (FFA) to determine the extent of damage to the retina. In certain cases, OCT is also used to diagnose its diff e rent stages.

LRBT treats such patients with highly sophisticated A rgon Lasers/Diode La s e r s which inhibit the p ro g ression of the disease. Pos i t i v e diffe re n c e in sight

Khalid Hassan, age 50, came to LRBT's Lah o r e Hospital with history of de c r eased vision in both eyes for over a year and diabetes for the last 15 years. He was wor r i e d on three accounts. Fea r of losing his vision. The pain of an operation. And worst of all the cost. On our assurances, that the expense and pain would be taken care of, eyesight saved, we gently persuaded him to trust us. His Fundus Ex amination showed Bi- Lateral Vitreo u s Haemorrhage and Tractional Ret i n a l Detachment invol v i n g Macula. He also had clinically significant Macular Odema.

His left Macula was treated with Argon Laser. After some time, he underwent Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV) and had some more Argon Laser sessions of both eyes under local Post operativel y , his anaesthesia. vision has improved . He is happy he rep o s e d his trust in LRBT. A dreaded eye disorder - MAC U L A R DEG E N E R AT I O N Macular Degeneration is a common cause of blindness in elderly patients although it can also occur in younger patients. It is diagnosed with the help of FFA and OCT.

The conventional treatment for Macular Degeneration in Pakistan is Photo Dynamic Therapy ( P DT) which is ext re m e l y ex p e n s i ve (costing a few lacs of rupees). LRBT's Karachi and La h o re hospitals are the only ones who use the more economical Diode La s e r Technology for Tr a n s - Pupillary Thermotherapy (TTT). The state-of-the art t reatment: intrav i t re a l injection of Avastin has been recently intro d u c e d , which is the very latest as well as ext re m e l y e c o n o m i c a l . A better focus on life

M. Tayyab, age 32, has two young daughters. He earns a meagre sum of Rs.4620 per month. Tayyab had good vision until a year ago. After visiting several doctors, he came to LRBT with a retinal problem. Tayyab came to LRBT's Lahore Hospital where with the help of FFA and OCT, all free of cost, he was diagnosed as having Angioid Streak, a hereditary disorder.

The conventional treatment for this disease is the extremely expensive PDT which was way beyond his means. Fortunately, LRBT has now introduced the latest method of treating such cases through an intravitreal injection known as Avastin which is economical and effective. He was given two injections and his visual acuity has Tayyab's improved improved remarkably. vision has given his teaching profession a new mission. A delicate surgical attachment - VI T R EO - R E T I N A L SU RG E R Y Retinal detachment is an ocular emergency caused by separation of the two layers of retina, causing loss of vision which can lead to permanent blindness if ignore d .

B-Scan helps in the diagnosis process. Vitrectomy and Retinal re-attachment surgery is performed enabling the patient to regain loss of vision. Vitrectomy is a highly ex p e n s i ve p ro c e d u re. There are sub- specialty units at LRBT's Karachi and La h o re hospitals for this. These are being expanded to cater to the large backlog of p a t i e n t s . Miracle of modern medicine

Shy Amber, a 17 year old girl belongs to a poor family. Amber was born with a squint much to her embarrassment. At the age of 8, she came to LRBT and was given glasses as she had lost her vision in the right eye due to tardiness in treatment. Years later, she noticed much to her dismay that her vision in the left eye had suddenly decreased. She again came to LRBT's Korangi Hospital and was diagnosed as a case of retinal detachment. Surgery was performed, totally free, which would have cost Rs. 80,000 in a private sector hospital.

Amber's deteriorating vision has been arrested. Now she can look forward to a life of independence. The precious gift of eyesight restored. She says: “I'm on my own now. I do not need to rely on anybody to sh o w me the way again.” Cloudiness in Vision - CO R N E A L DISEASES / TR A N S P L A N T Cornea acts as the eye's outermost lens and contributes 65 to 75 per cent of the eye's focusing powe r. Sometimes, the cornea is damaged by a foreign object which penetrates the tissues leading to infections and scarring. Other times corneal dystrophies are responsible for this condition. Both re q u i re corneal transplant, where by, the affected cornea is re m oved and replaced with a clear cornea from a donor.

L R B T, the largest provider of eye care in Pakistan, has transplanted 462 corneas, during the last 3 ye a r s . These corneas are re c e i ve d f rom Sri La n ka and Canada and implanted on poor patients who otherwise would be condemned to a life of darkness. Fr om despondency to a bright outlook

Saima Hashmi, age 20, belongs to a family of ten. Her father, a taxi driver earns Rs.6000 per month. Her mother, Rs.2500.

Saima had persistent eye pr oblems of redness and itchiness in both eyes for many years. Despite eye dr ops the sym p t o m s remained. Eight months la t e r , she developed pain in her left eye and was br ought to LRBT where it was diagonosed that she had corneal perforation.

She was admitted to LRBT 's Korangi Hospital for left eye tarsorrhaphy (closing of upper and lower eye lids). This step was initially ta k en to pres e r v e her eye .

Af ter treatment for two months, her perforation healed and she was advised a Corneal Transplant of the le f t eye. The surgery was successful and her vision is “It transformed my no w res t o r ed. eyes - clearer vision for one, and the cosmetic diffe re n c e , ” sa ys Saima as she faced the camera. 17 18 Ach i e vem e n t s at a Glance 2005-06

■ 1.3 Million patients treated in OPD. This is 30% of all eye OPD patients in Pakistan.

■ 148,177 major and minor surgeries. This is more than a quarter of all eye surgeries done in P a k i s t a n .

■ Screening in our Secondary Hospitals of all patients above 30 years for Glaucoma which is a major cause of preventable blindness.

■ Major modernization of our existing hospitals with appropriate state-of-art equipment.

■ Mandra (Distt. Rawalpindi) expanded whilst Korangi (Karachi), Lar (Distt. Multan) and Akora Khattak (Distt. Nowshera) hospitals being expanded to meet the growing demand.

■ 2 new mini hospitals opened: an interim facility to serve earthquake victims at Mansehra and another at Khanewal in Southern Punjab. Chairman’s Report

This has been an eventful year for LRBT. The earthquake relief activities in Azad Kashmir and Hazara, the opening of 2 new mini hospitals, the expansion of Korangi, Mandra, Lar and Akora Khattak hospitals, a major modernization of equipment and the usual double digit increase in patient visits to our OPD and in surgeries.

Our earthquake activities were divided in 3 phases: In the first phase which began within 3 days of the earthquake we deployed 5 mobile medical teams in the remote areas of Azad Kashmir and Hazara for emergency medical care. They treated around 3000 patients. The second phase which began within 3 weeks of the earthquake was focused on providing shelter before the onset of the Himalayan winter. 1000 families were provided with tents/corrugated iron sheets, jackets, blankets and quilts. In the third phase a temporary 10 bed Eye Hospital was established in Mansehra in rented premises, within 4 weeks of the disaster, to cater to the eye care needs of the affected people. There was obviously a great need as on an average we are treating 150 patients in OPD and performing 15 surgeries every day. As a consequence we have decided to establish a permanent hospital in this area. 9 Kanals (5400 sq. yards) of land 13 Km. from Mansehra on the Mansehra -Balakot road have been donated to us by Mr. Usman Peracha. Mr. Peracha is a major supporter and funds the operating expenses of Shahpur hospital. The hospital is being designed by Mr. Azizul Haq a Trustee and a prominent architect. The project cost is estimated at Rs. 45 million. We have raised Rs. 31.2 million so far including Rs. 8.7 million by Shaheen Amin and his friends in Riyadh, Rs. 8.5 million from Shell (through Sight Savers International), Rs. 6 million from the OPEC Fund for International Development, Rs. 6 million by Friends of LRBT Islamabad, Rs. 9 million by LRBT America and Rs. 2 million by President Musharraf. Construction is planned from October 2006 and the hospital should be functional by mid 2008.

A 10 bed mini hospital was opened in Khanewal on 2nd January 2006 after remodelling the house donated by Mr. Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Mrs. Yasmin Anwar Sattar and Mrs. Arshad Majeed. In the first 6 months, average Patient Visits to OPD were over 110 with 10 surgeries being performed every day. This is far above our expectations and further expansion is required. Unilever is funding part of the operating expenses of this facility.

Double digit growth in OPD and surgery has lead us to embark on a major expansion of Korangi, Mandra, Akora Khattak, Lar and Lahore hospitals. Mandra's remodelling, expansion and modernization of equipment has been completed. Work in Korangi, Akora Khattak and Lar is in progress and will be finished by end of this year. Korangi's expansion is being funded by Ms. Khurshid Bhaimia, Akora's by Pakistan Tobacco and Shell and Lar's by Shell. Lahore's expansion which is being financed by Mr. Sohail Khan and Uch Power has been delayed as approvals from the Lahore Township Cooperative Society are awaited.

Tando Bago and Tando Adam hospitals also need expansion and this will be undertaken in 2006/7.

We will be embarking on the construction of 2 new hospitals in the last quarter of 2006: Mansehra as mentioned above and Pasrur near Sialkot. 7 Kanals (4200 sq. yards) of land has 20 been donated by Mr. Zakaullah Khan at Pasrur. He is raising funds for the construction and equipment cost. He has also endowed Rs 10 million for this hospital and the income from this will meet part of the operating expenses.

Construction of Arifwala hospital is scheduled to commence by early 2007.

Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal {PBM} became our largest donor this year. Their assistance enabled us to significantly increase the volume of major surgeries for which we are extremely grateful. The Prevention of Blindness Programme has been one of the most successful interventions in the field of health as the Prevalence of Blindness has declined by 42 % over the last 16 years. Regrettably their policy has changed in 2006/7 and they have now decided to limit the assistance to Rs. 1 million per hospital with a maximum of 5 hospitals for any one organization. As LRBT is the only organization with more than 5 hospitals, this will have an adverse impact on our programmes to eradicate curable blindness.

We had the pleasure of welcoming at our Central Office Ms. Caroline Harper, the new CEO of Sight Savers International and Mrs. Nazma Kabir the new Regional Director. They also visited our Korangi Hospital and held detailed discussions regarding our current and future plans. Apart from funding our Operating Expenses, SSI this year also funded purchases of equipment notably Pneumotonometers which enabled us to introduce Glaucoma screening at our Secondary hospitals helping in the early detection of this potentially blinding disease. We remain indebted to SSI not just for their significant financial support but also their advice and guidance.

The Graham Layton Trust UK has been a source of great strength for us. In addition to donating our entire requirement of Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) needed in Cataract surgery, they sent us substantial sums of money for equipment and for earthquake relief. LRBT America also gathered significant sums for earthquake relief and for the new permanent hospital in Mansehra. Friends of LRBT in Pakistan were also very active in raising funds.

Central Zakat Council and INFAQ foundation maintained their assistance at Rs. 6 million and Rs. 3 million respectively for which we are grateful.

President Musharraf honoured us by his presence at the gala celebration hosted by the Friends of LRBT to commemorate 2 milestones: 20 years of LRBT and the free treatment of 10 million poor patients during that period as well as to honour the donors who through their consistent and generous support had made it possible. The President appreciated our major contribution to the fight against curable blindness and donated Rs. 2 million for our new Mansehra hospital. He also pledged Rs. 1 million on behalf of the Sindh Governor.

I would like to thank all our donors large and small who have believed in us and who have made our success in the fight against curable blindness possible. May God bless them and their ventures and adequately recompense them both in this world and the hereafter.

Tannaz Minwala, Mannan Hatim Ali and their team as always lived up to their name – Creative Unit - and once again designed and produced this Review gratis, the photography for which was done free by Jamsyd Masud. This Review has been sponsored as usual by M r. Khalid Mahmood CEO of Getz Pharma. Our grateful thanks.

Our doctors, paramedics and other members of our staff continue to work long hours under difficult conditions and our success in reducing the prevalence of blindness is due to their commitment and effort. 21 Revi e w of Opera t ion s

OPD VISITS / SURGERIES During the year ending June 2006, 1,310,393 patients visited the Out Patient Departments (OPD) of our 14 hospitals and 27 primary eye-care / outreach clinics, a growth of 12% over the previous year. During the same period 148,177 major and minor Surgeries were performed, an increase of 10%. The overwhelming bulk of the major surgery was cataract which is the biggest cause of curable blindness. LRBT accounts for 26 % of all cataract surgeries in the country. All treatment and surgery was absolutely free.

223 Corneas were transplanted at Lahore and Korangi. The corneas in Lahore were donated by Begum Zahra Manzoor Ilahi, President, Binai Eye Bank Pakistan, who obtained them from Sri Lanka. Mr. Sohail Khan a banker from USA donated $ 10,200 for funding this surgery in Lahore. In Korangi the corneas were donated mainly by the Ontario Eye Bank, Canada – courtesy of Syed Muslim Hasany.

EX P E N S E S Our operating expenses during the year, were Rs. 209 million excluding Rs. 9 million spent on earthquake relief activities; an increase of 38% above last year, mainly due to Shahpur & Mandra Hospitals being operational for full year as compared to partly operational during the previous year and establishment of new hospitals at Mansehra and Khanewal. Capital expenditure at Rs. 84 million includes donated property of Rs. 16 million. Our overhead expenses, which at 4.8% of total expenses in 2004-05 were already one of the lowest in the world, declined to 3.6% in the year review.

SOPHISTICATED EQUIPMENT ■ OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY (OCT) is a highly advanced scanning machine which uses near Infrared rays for the early diagnosis and progression of various retinal diseases such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Age Related Retinal disorders and various other diseases. OCT for our Korangi and Lahore tertiary hospitals have been procured, funded by anonymous donors. These are the first machines available in any hospital in Pakistan.

■ Optical Fibre Free Intravitreal Surgery System (OFFISS Microscope) is a state of the art equipment for retinal surgery which has been acquired for our Lahore Tertiary hospital, the only machine in Pakistan.

■ PHACO EMULSIFICATION: All the Tertiary and Secondary hospitals have been equipped with Phaco Emulsification units to enable our surgeons to keep pace with the latest 22 technology and patients to benefit from state-of-the-art eye surgeries.

■ 5 Operation Microscopes with Teaching Aids have been provided to selected Secondary hospitals, for training of junior doctors in surgery.

■ PNEUMOTONOMETERS / FIELD ANALYZERS: LRBT has embarked upon an ambitious programme of Glaucoma screening for all patients over 30 years of age visiting our Tertiary and Secondary hospitals. For this purpose Pneumotonometers have been provided to all the Secondary hospitals, courtesy of SSI. Readings of patients with high Intra Ocular Pressure are confirmed on Applanation Tonometers and thereafter examined on Field Analyzers which have been procured for 8 of our 9 Secondary hospitals. This will help in the early detection of this potentially blinding disease enabling appropriate treatment to be initiated well in time.

EX P A N S I O N KO R A N G I The construction of 2nd floor on the existing building at Korangi hospital is in progress The second floor will house the new expanded Operation Theater complex, an enlarged Paediatric clinic, library, conference hall and 4 single doctors’ rooms. The ground floor will be remodelled to accommodate 5 subspeciality clinics: Glaucoma, Vitro Retinal Medical Retina, Occuloplastic and Cornea and External Eye diseases. We should be in full operation by December 2006. Ms. Khurshid Bhaimia has committed Rs.18.3 Million which virtually covers the entire cost for which we are extremely grateful. Funds for a patients lift have been committed by another donor. MA N D R A The re-modelling and expansion of Mandra hospital has been completed. This hospital has been provided with a Photo-coagulator, Yag Laser, Pneumotonometer, Field Analyzer and Operation Microscope with teaching aid, apart from the usual equipment. Pakistan Bait-ul- Mal granted Rs. 4.7 Million for funding some of the new equipment.

Since remodelling and provision of additional equipment, the number of patients visiting this hospital, both for examination and surgery has increased considerably. It has therefore been decided to gradually upgrade this unit to a Tertiary eye hospital to cater to the needs of Northern Punjab, Azad Kashmir and NWFP.

As a first step a Paediatric unit is being added for which the necessary equipment including Anaesthesia machine has been funded by an anonymous donor. An FCPS doctor has been provided “on the job training” at our Lahore hospital and an Anaesthetist has been engaged. KH A N E W A L The re-modelling of Khanewal premises to convert it to a 10 bed mini hospital has been completed. The hospital started functioning on 2nd January 2006 and is already seeing over 120 patients in OPD and performing 10 surgeries per day. We have stationed one doctor for 24 the time being. The 2nd doctor will be in place as soon as his accommodation is ready.

AKORA KHATTAK Expansion of Akora Khattak on the additional land donated by Mian Hizran Badshah is in progress. The expansion includes: wards, waiting shed, screening rooms and canteen and will be completed by September 2006. LA R Expansion of Lar on the additional land donated by Syed Fakhar Imam, a Trustee has also started. The expansion includes: waiting shed, screening rooms and canteen and will be completed by November 2006. 28 HOSPITAL INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (HIMS) HIMS is being successfully used for recording of patients’ information from registration to discharge including the personal data as well as the clinical information regarding patient management along with set protocols. Manual recording of data has been stopped at the hospital after implementation. HIMS is a user-friendly system which is being used by the relevant staff in each department.

This system is one of its kind in Pakistan where almost all information is being recorded on computers.

HIMS has also been implemented successfully at Lahore Hospital in late 2005.

LRBT business at two sites (Korangi and Lahore) is now totally dependent on smooth running of HIMS and computer networks. LRBT’s Management is committed to improve its service to the stakeholders through use of state-of-art technology wherever possible.

The United Fund of Pakistan has been renamed as LRBT America Inc. and supports LRBT. It is an independent sovereign entity with its own Governance structure. Farrokh Captain who serves as President of LRBT America, is also a Trustee of LRBT and serves as the link between the two.

The main event of LRBT America was the holding of it's eighth annual fundraising event in New York on April 29, 2006. The event, which was a great success, was co-chaired by Shama Haider and Tazeen Ahmed, ably assisted by Nevine Haider, Aliya Zafar Khan, Asma Rabbani, Subika Jafri and Asma Khan, the Executive Director. There were over 350 attendees and the pledges and donations were the highest ever. The funds raised, will be used to help build a new hospital in Mansehra and to purchase much needed medical equipment for LRBT.

During 2005 LRBT America broke the $1 million dollar mark in raising funds. This is a milestone for which we are all very proud. LRBT America also actively supported relief efforts for those affected by the terrible earthquake which hit Pakistan in October 2005. Two earthquake specific fundraisers were held late in 2005. One in Washington organized by Fauzia Kasuri and Nigar Husain and the other at Ambassador Munir Akram's residence in New York. The total raised was $ 48,050 to help clothe and shelter many families in the earthquake affected areas.

Asma Khan and Farrokh Captain attended the APPNA convention in Chicago and during the year we were successful in forming three additional chapters in Las Vegas, St. Louis and Chicago. These are lead by Chand H o o d b h o y, Dr. Javed Siddiqui, and Kathy Siddiqui respectively. It is planned to hold a fund raising event in St. Louis on September 16, 2006.

The Honourable Shaukat Aziz is Chairman and Patron of LRBT in America, Amir Dossal the Honorary Chair, Dennis Dunn the Honorary Treasurer and Shama Haider Director.

The major donors and corporate sponsors for this year were the following:

2004/5 had seen an increase of 45% in the level of incoming resources, from GBP 215,634 to 311,587. This was mainly due to an increase of circa 35,800 in general donations and an unprecedented increase in fund raising activities which yielded a highly creditable GBP 130,000.

A further GBP 20,000 was donated by the late Michael Padmore and Edna Padmore specifically for the construction of the hospital at Sh a h p u r . This was part of a total donation of GBP 100,000 given over a period of five years.

36 2005/6 has seen a further year on year growth of 40% in the level of incoming resources, reflecting the success of the strategy of approaching corporate bodies and a generous legacy of GBP 67,018.66 received from the estate of a long term supporter and friend of the late Graham Layton.

The success of these fund raising activities is due entirely to the unstinting effort and work of the trustees and all the volunteers who give their time generously and without question.

The Trust has given a commitment to its sister charity in Pakistan, the Layton Rahmatulla Benevolent Trust (LRBT), to fund completely their Inter Ocular Lens (IOL) requirement for the foreseeable future for all hospitals. In 2004/5 the cost of this commitment was GBP 146,367 rising to approximately GBP 173,000 in 2005/6.

The dreadful earthquake that struck Pakistan on 8th October 2005 was a great challenge to which the Trust and its volunteers responded energetically and successfully to the extent that, in addition to the donations received by the Trust in the UK for earthquake relief, over US$ 130,000 was remitted directly to LRBT in Pakistan as a result of the Trust's fund raising activities. A further US $ 70,800 was remitted directly for establishing a Paediatric clinic at LRBT's Mandra hospital.

During 2006 the Board of Trustees has been pleased to welcome Mrs. Matanat Ghaffar [from 16th February 2006] and Dr. Yasmine Hilton [from 17th July 2006] to their number.

The Trustees would like to record their thanks to all of the many donors and volunteers who have, according to their means and time available, contributed so generously to the Trust and its performance in this period.
