Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection.

  • Nuytsia the Journal of the Western Australian Herbarium 23: 503–526 Published Online 21 November 2013
L.J. Biggs & C.M. Parker, Updates to WA’s vascular plant census for 2012 503 Nuytsia The journal of the Western Australian Herbarium 23: 503–526 Published online 21 November 2013 SHORT COMMUNICATION Updates to Western Australia’s vascular plant census for 2012 The census database at the Western Australian Herbarium (PERTH) lists current names and recent synonymy for Western Australia’s native and naturalised vascular plants, as well as algae, bryophytes, lichens, slime moulds and some fungi. The names represented in the census are either sourced from published research or denote as yet unpublished names based on herbarium voucher specimens. We herein summarise the changes made to vascular plant records in this database during 2012. Ninety five taxa were newly recorded for the state, of which 11 are naturalised and 29 have been added to the Department of Parks and Wildlife’s (DPaW; formerly Department of Environment and Conservation) Threatened and Priority Flora list for Western Australia (Smith 2012) (Table 1). Three hundred and twenty six existing entries on the census underwent a name change (Table 2), including a number of taxa in Eucalyptus L’Her (Nicolle & French 2012; Nicolle et al. 2012), Polygala L. (Kerrigan 2012), and Commersonia J.R.Forst & G.Forst and Rulingia R.Br. (Wilkins & Whitlock 2011a, 2011b). Under the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria (CHAH) guidelines for informal names (Barker 2005), manuscript names are being converted to phrase names unless publication is imminent. Sixty three manuscript names were updated to phrase names through this process, while 26 manuscript names and 49 phrase names were formally published (Table 2).

Authors Caroline Gelderblom is an environmental scientist whose emphasis is on promoting conservation by optimising the socio-ecological interface. She has over 20 years of experience in the environmental sector and has, in recent years, focused on institutional strengthening at national, provincial and local levels. Caroline has been a member of the Fynbos Forum since the 1990s, is well-known and respected in the conservation community, and has a good understanding of the both the current drivers and the history of the conservation sector in the Cape Floristic Region. She has a Master’s degree in conservation biology and is currently on UNDPs panel of approved technical experts as an independent consultant. Prior to this, she worked for over 10 years at the CSIR where she supported a number of bioregional projects and was seconded to the Working for Water management team. In her early career, she worked at UCT doing conservation planning and at SANBI focusing on biodiversity in southern Africa. She has been involved in writing several books and publications. Julia Wood, a botanist by training, has spent her career conserving and managing the rich biodiversity in the Fynbos Biome. She has devoted many years to the Fynbos Forum, passionately believing in the power of “champions”. She was originally based at UCT and funded by the Arid Zone Biome Project to undertake her MSc on conservation prioritisation in the Worcester-Robertson Karoo. Thereafter, she worked at Kirstenbosch, documenting the vegetation on the Tygerberg Hills. In 1995, she joined Parks and Forests at the Cape Town City Council, working there until she moved to the Table Mountain Fund in 2003.

  • Investigation of Glycosyltransferases from Oat
Investigation of glycosyltransferases from oat Thomas LOUVEAU A thesis submitted to the University of East Anglia for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia John Innes Centre Norwich, the United Kingdoms © October 2013 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there-from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. Many of these compounds are glycosides generated by the action of family one UDP-dependant glycosyltransferases (UGTs). Glycosylated products of UGTs are known to be essential for reproductive fitness, defence against pathogens, and signalling; UGTs also have a role in the detoxification of xenobiotics. To date, little is known about monocot UGTs compare to their dicot counterparts, despite their potential role in defence and modification of health-promoting component of cereals essential to human diet. This thesis focuses on identification and functional investigation of UGTs expressed in in the diploid oat species Avena strigosa. Chapters 1 and 2 consist of the General Introduction and Material and Methods, respectively. In chapter 3, a systematic analysis of root-expressed UGTs was carried out using transcriptomic and proteomic approaches. A subset of UGTs was then selected for biochemical analysis. Of particular interest were candidates for glycosylation of avenacin, an antimicrobial triterpenoid glycoside that protects oat against fungi infection.
