    The Lincolnshire Gentry and the Wars of the Roses Jonathan S. Mackman D.Phil. Thesis University of York Department of History August 1999 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the impact of the Wars of the Roses upon the people, government and landed structure of a hitherto under-studied shire. It is intended as a bridge between the numerous post-McFarlanite county studies of recent years and the specific issue of the Wars, a conflict generally approached from a central perspective. It begins by examining Lincolnshire's landed society during the later Lancastrian period, stressing the county's political isolation, the sheer size and collective wealth of its population, but also the lack of any dominant political force. It examines the nature of local government, particularly the changing social profile of local officers, and also the issue of local violence. In particular, it highlights the effects of faction and manipulation of justice in an otherwise relatively law-abiding county, and the influence of the shires upon the descent into warfare. The thesis then addresses Lincolnshire's experience of the Wars themselves, particularly stressing the limited participation of the resident population. The Lincolnshire Rebellion of 1470 is described in detail, this shadowy episode being carefully reconstructed in order to gain a fuller understanding of its importance. This is then tied in with a discussion of how the Wars had only a limited effect on Lincolnshire's social and landed structures, yet radically altered its relationship with the Crown. It highlights the tension between the established order and the Yorkist administrative elite, and the way this became embodied in a local power-struggle which, it is argued, led to the Rebellion and ultimately contributed to Edward IV's own deposition.

Thus wrote Sir Thomas Browne in an age which had witnesse~ unparalleled tumult and upheaval both in Church and State. "'Tis opportune to look back upon old times and contemplate our forefathers," 1 he continued, and certainly it is as though in times of rapid and violent change there is an instinctive impulse to save out of the wreck, for the benefit of future generations, the material in which the vanished past is reflected. The systematic care of historical records in France dates from the post-revolutionary period. In this country the movement for the printing and. preservation of local historical manu­ scripts received a great impetus in the twenty years after the first great war of the present century, when there was a rapid increase in the number of County Record Societies. The Northampton­ shire Society was founded in 1920.2 THE COUNTY'S PART IN NATIONAL HISTORY. In no other county could there have been greater justification for this step. Sprawling across the heart of England, the shire has played its full part in the national story. From the day when William the Conqueror built himself a castle at Rockingham so that he miggt hunt the deer in the surrounding forest, many of his successors on the throne, including his present Majesty King George VI, have loved to hUnt the deer or the fox in our woodlands and pastures.

    John Ramsdell, John Ravensdale, Isaac Johnson, and Nathaniel Turner Ian Watson This article presents evidence to show that John Ramsdell, who was in Lynn, Massachusetts, from about 1631 to his death in 1688, was the same man as John “Ravensdale,” who was made a freeman of Massachusetts Bay on 6 May 1635, and had been named in the 1627 will of Isaac Johnson as a servant. Johnson also mentioned “cosen Nathanaell Turner” in the will. Turner can be identified as Captain Nathaniel Turner of Lynn and later of New Haven, Connecticut, whose servant about 1632 was John Ramsdell. John Ramsdell of Lynn John1 Ramsdell lived in Lynn from at least 1631 until his death on 27 August 1688, and was the father of at least eight children.[1] Two statements of his age exist: one in a court deposition,[2] the other his age at death. Neither inspires great trust, but both happen to agree on a birthdate in late 1601 or early 1602. The given name of his wife, Priscilla, is known only from the record of her death in Lynn on 23 January 1675/6.[3] She is also mentioned, but not named, in a 12 April 1675 deed of gift where John transferred his farm and land in Lynn to his son Aquila.[4] Nowhere is her age or her maiden surname given. John Ramsdell was first definitely recorded as a member of a quarterly court jury in 1638,[5] but he had been in Lynn for several years already. We know this because in 1673 he testified that he had been familiar with the Lynn-Marblehead road for forty-two years, thus since 1631.[6] Also, in 1657 he deposed that “twenty-five years ago [i.e., in 1632], when he was a servant of Captain Torner, his master and other inhabitants of Lynn, before it was a town, fenced in Nahant” and “That by reason of these householders fencing, they had put their cattle there without molestation all these years.”[7] Nahant is 1 Vital Records of Lynn, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849, 2 vols.

    KATHLEEN MAJOR Bassano & Vandyk Copyright © The British Academy 2002 – all rights reserved Kathleen Major 1906–2000 KATHLEEN MAJOR was born on 10 April 1906 at 54 Penn Road, Holloway, a short distance north of the Caledonian Market. Her father, George Major, a potato merchant in partnership with brothers, had married her mother, Gertrude Alice Blow, in April 1902. George’s father Robert had been a master mariner in the East India trade. It was perhaps Robert’s retirement to Yorkshire which led George to make the acquain- tance of the Blows whose home was at Goole in the West Riding. George Major does not seem to have had any formal religious attachment, but the Blows were Congregationalist, and it was at their Congregationalist Christ Church in Goole that Kathleen was baptised on 20 June 1906, to be followed six years later by her sister (and only sibling) Eileen, born in February 1912. When Kathleen went up to Oxford in 1925 she was registered as Church of England. The potato and vegetable business prospered and before the end of the First World War George Major had bought the agricultural estate of Whaplode Manor near Holbeach, in the Holland division of Lincolnshire. Abbott’s Manor in Holbeach became the family home. His daughters were educated at private schools, regarding which Kathleen was oddly reticent. Her last school, Wilton House in Reading, must have done a good job, because in 1925 she won a commoner’s place to read history at St Hilda’s College, Oxford. Had the Majors remained in London we might doubt whether their elder daughter would have become a noted medievalist.
