Bright Spots

(ROUTE DIRECTIONS ARE ALWAYS NOTED IN ALL CAPS)

June 5, 2018

Did you know…? racemosa 'SMNSRD4' PP# 26,613 is a true “Bright Spot” this week. Going by the much more attractive and descriptive trade name ‘Lemony Lace’® it is shining in the northeast corner of the Four Seasons garden. The feathery foliage is the show stopper, appearing in Spring with red tinged edges and maturing as we see it now to a glowing chartreuse. The species, commonly known as red elderberry, is a native tree throughout the US, Europe and parts of Asia, growing to 20’. Its fruits were eaten by many Native American cultures, and other parts used medicinally as purgatives. The Wildflower Center warns that the parts are toxic if ingested raw. This functions as a deciduous , maturing at about 5’ high and 6’ wide. It produces clusters of white flowers in early Spring, before the stunning foliage takes pride of place. It should prove deer resistant and is described as cold hardy. The Garden Explorer database lists additional plantings of ‘Lemony Lace’® in Flagler Garden (2015) and in the Morton Native Plant Garden (2016), so keep an eye out for it as you enjoy your garden visit.
