Caught individuals have been identified, described and presented in photographs. Measurements of selected physicochemical parameters of water were made and perspectives for the studied population were evaluated. The finding is discussed with available literature describing introductions of alien species with aquaristical origin in Polish waters. Abstract Male swordtails in the genus Xiphophorus display a conspicuous ventral elongation of the caudal fin, the sword, which arose through sexual selection due to female preference. Females mate regularly and are able to store sperm for at least 6 months. If multiple mating is frequent, this would raise the intriguing question about the role of female choice and male-male competition in shaping the mating system of these fishes. Size-dependent alternate mating strategies occur in Xiphophorus; one such strategy is courtship with a sigmoid display by large dominant males, while the other is gonopodial thrusting, in which small subordinate males sneak copulations. Using microsatellite markers, we observed a frequency of multiple paternity in wild-caught Xiphophorus multilineatus in 28% of families analyzed, but the actual frequency of multiple mating suggested by the correction factor PrDM was 33%. The number of fathers contributing genetically to the brood ranged from one to three. -

DIRECT AND INDIRECT EFFECTS OF THE GUPPY, POECILIA RETICULATA, ON THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF STREAM ECOSYSTEMS IN THE NORTHERN RANGE MOUNTAINS OF TRINIDAD by TROY NATHANIEL SIMON (Under the Direction of Catherine M. Pringle) ABSTRACT We are currently in the middle of the sixth mass extinction, thus predicting the ecological consequences of species loss from communities is a high priority research topic. Additionally, characterizing the ecosystem impact of macroconsumers has strong conservation implications, given the global trend in biodiversity loss toward higher trophic levels. The goal of this dissertation was to use Trinidadian guppies in the mountain streams of Northern Trinidad as a model system to explore several potentially important direct and indirect ecosystem effects of macroconsumers, which we have little understanding of in natural systems. This collection of studies utilizes both localized exclusion of macroconsumers using underwater electric fences within pools, as well as the natural reach-scale exclusion of guppies above and below barrier waterfalls to examine the ecosystem-level effects of macroconsumers. Results show that local adaptation of guppy populations, to the absence of large piscivores in higher elevation streams, shifted their top-down effects from reducing macroinvertebrate standing stock biomass, to reducing primary producer standing stock biomass. Additionally, the consumptive and non-consumptive effects guppies had similar but opposing effects on algal growth and biomass, which resulted in strong treatment effects from excluding guppies on primary algae. Finally, the loss of omnivorous guppies from a macroconsumer assemblage can alter the strength of top down effects of the remaining macroconsumer community on an important ecosystem-level process at both local- and landscape-scales. -

In cases where phylogeny is incompletely understood, taxonomic units are arranged alphabetically. Listed below are definitions for interpreting NatureServe conservation status ranks (GRanks and SRanks). These ranks reflect an assessment of the condition of the species rangewide (GRank) and statewide (SRank). Rangewide ranks are assigned by NatureServe and statewide ranks are assigned by the Idaho Conservation Data Center. GX or SX Presumed extinct or extirpated: not located despite intensive searches and virtually no likelihood of rediscovery. GH or SH Possibly extinct or extirpated (historical): historically occurred, but may be rediscovered. Its presence may not have been verified in the past 20–40 years. A species could become SH without such a 20–40 year delay if the only known occurrences in the state were destroyed or if it had been extensively and unsuccessfully looked for. The SH rank is reserved for species for which some effort has been made to relocate occurrences, rather than simply using this status for all elements not known from verified extant occurrences. G1 or S1 Critically imperiled: at high risk because of extreme rarity (often 5 or fewer occurrences), rapidly declining numbers, or other factors that make it particularly vulnerable to rangewide extinction or extirpation. BEHAVIORS The western mosquitofish may be found in the southern one-half of Illinois. This fish lives in areas of little current and plentiful vegetation in swamps, sloughs, backwaters, ponds, lakes and streams. The western mosquitofish reproduces three or four times during the summer. Fertilization is internal. After mating, sperm is stored in a pouch within the female and may be used to fertilize several broods. The eggs develop inside the female and hatch in three to four weeks. Young are born alive. A brood may contain very few or several hundred fish. Young develop rapidly and may reproduce in their first summer.
