In her capacity as my advisor, Professor Susan V. Donaldson read many drafts of this work and commented in precise, helpful, understanding, motivational, and encouraging ways. Her critiques, while always discerning, were framed in the language of a diplomat and often delivered over a hearty, jovial lunch. Professors Colleen Kennedy and Cam Walker examined the drafts in December, with many exams to evaluate and grades to post, and in spite of the season, asked provocative questions and offered invaluable suggestions. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. PREFACE On October 25, 1994, in Union, South Carolina, Susan Smith drowned her two young sons in the John D. Long Lake. The ensuing media attention, the early search for a black man Smith accused of kidnapping the children, Smith's eventual confession, and the recovery of the children's bodies shocked the small textile community. In the investigations leading to Smith's trial, the town continued to endure the tragedy, despair, fear, and guilt associated with years of family and community secrets concerning incest, domestic violence, suicide, racism, mental illness,

    Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response.

Klimas, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor David Stebenne, Advisor Professor John Guilmartin Advisor Professor James Bartholomew History Graduate Program ABSTRACT This study examines Congress’s role in defense policy-making between 1955 and 1968, with particular focus on the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), its most prominent and influential members, and the evolving defense authorization process. The consensus view holds that, between World War II and the drawdown of the Vietnam War, the defense oversight committees showed acute deference to Defense Department legislative and budget requests. At the same time, they enforced closed oversight procedures that effectively blocked less “pro-defense” members from influencing the policy-making process. Although true at an aggregate level, this understanding is incomplete. It ignores the significant evolution to Armed Services Committee oversight practices that began in the latter half of 1950s, and it fails to adequately explore the motivations of the few members who decisively shaped the process. SASC chairman Richard Russell (D-GA) dominated Senate deliberations on defense policy. Relying only on input from a few key colleagues – particularly his protégé and eventual successor, John Stennis (D-MS) – Russell for the better part of two decades decided almost in isolation how the Senate would act to oversee the nation’s defense.

    GEORGIA LAW REVIEW(DO NOT DELETE) 11/6/2018 8:33 PM THE HISTORY OF REDISTRICTING IN GEORGIA Charles S. Bullock III* In his memoirs, Chief Justice Earl Warren singled out the redistricting cases as the most significant decisions of his tenure on the Court.1 A review of the changes redistricting introduced in Georgia supports Warren’s assessment. Not only have the obligations to equalize populations across districts and to do so in a racially fair manner transformed the makeup of the state’s collegial bodies, Georgia has provided the setting for multiple cases that have defined the requirements to be met when designing districts. Other than the very first adjustments that occurred in the 1960s, changes in Georgia plans had to secure approval from the federal government pursuant to the Voting Rights Act. Also, the first four decades of the Redistricting Revolution occurred with a Democratic legislature and governor in place. Not surprisingly, the partisans in control of redistricting sought to protect their own and as that became difficult they employed more extreme measures. When in the minority, Republicans had no chance to enact plans on their own. Beginning in the 1980s and peaking a decade later, Republicans joined forces with black Democrats to devise alternatives to the proposals of white Democrats. The biracial, bipartisan coalition never had sufficient numbers to enact its ideas. After striking out in the legislature, African-Americans appealed to the U.S. Attorney General alleging that the plans enacted were less favorable to black interests than alternatives * Charles S. These are just a few, to give you an idea of some of the “greats” we can claim: Jazz singer Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959) was born Eleanora Fagan, but took her father’s surname, Holiday, and “Billie” from a silent film star. As a child she lived in poverty in East Baltimore, and later gave her first performance at Fell’s Point. In 1933 she was “discovered” in a Harlem nightclub, and soon became wildly popular, with a beautiful voice and her own, truly unique style. Her well-known song, “Strange Fruit,” described the horrors of lynchings in Jim Crow America. Through her singing, she raised consciousness about racism as well as about the beauties of African-American culture. Marine biologist and conservationist Rachel Carson (1907-1964) wrote the book Silent Spring, which, with her other writings, is credited with advancing the global environmental movement. Although opposed by chemical companies, her work led to a nationwide ban on DDT and other pesticides, and inspired a grassroots environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S.

    09-Mollin 12/2/03 3:26 PM Page 113 The Limits of Egalitarianism: Radical Pacifism, Civil Rights, and the Journey of Reconciliation Marian Mollin In April 1947, a group of young men posed for a photograph outside of civil rights attorney Spottswood Robinson’s office in Richmond, Virginia. Dressed in suits and ties, their arms held overcoats and overnight bags while their faces carried an air of eager anticipation. They seemed, from the camera’s perspective, ready to embark on an exciting adventure. Certainly, in a nation still divided by race, this visibly interracial group of black and white men would have caused people to stop and take notice. But it was the less visible motivations behind this trip that most notably set these men apart. All of the group’s key organizers and most of its members came from the emerging radical pacifist movement. Opposed to violence in all forms, many had spent much of World War II behind prison walls as conscientious objectors and resisters to war. Committed to social justice, they saw the struggle for peace and the fight for racial equality as inextricably linked. Ardent egalitarians, they tried to live according to what they called the brotherhood principle of equality and mutual respect. As pacifists and as militant activists, they believed that nonviolent action offered the best hope for achieving fundamental social change.     Gary Richards. Lovers & Beloveds: Sexual Otherness in Southern Fiction, 1936-1961. Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2005. 243p. Erin Clair Arkansas Tech University Despite pervasive stereotypes of the post Civil War American South as a place of sexual secrets and transgressive desires, little comprehensive critical attention has been paid to sexuality in southern literature. In his intelligent and highly readable study, Gary Richards addresses this critical silence by arguing that same-sex desire was foundational to writers’ understanding of southern culture during the middle of the twentieth century. By grounding his analyses of Southern Renaissance nov- els in sexual theory, and by carefully addressing how the texts construct race and gender in relation to sexuality, Richards’ study is both ambitious and impressive. His captivating work sheds light on the diverse representations of sexual otherness that have long been ignored or dismissed by what Richards calls “the Agrarians’ conservative legacy” (21). Richards focuses on six mid-twentieth-century authors—Truman Capote, Wil- liam Goyen, Richard Wright, Lillian Smith, Harper Lee, and Carson McCullers—to support his claim that southern writers are “as central to American gay/lesbian literary production as…those of any of the nation’s other regions” (4). After his compelling chapter on the absence of adequate sexuality studies in southern literary criticism, Richards divides his chapters based on gender: the first two devoted to male authors, the last three to female authors. However, Lovers & Beloveds is actually constructed around two main arguments. The first is based on the extent to which a text adheres to the assumption that “gender transitivity” structures sexual identity—a concept discussed by Michel Foucault, Eve Sedgwick, and David Halperin.

Scott Wednesday, November 15, 2017 Location: Kennesaw State University Archives, Sturgis Library, Kennesaw campus TS: The interview today is with Laura Davis, who is the 2017 recipient of KSU’s Outstanding Teaching Award. Laura, let’s start with your background, particularly your educational background. I know you went to Wake Forest University for your bachelor’s degree. I assume that you were a traditional student right out of high school, but would you talk about why Wake Forest, and how did you become an English major? LD: My parents got married really young and had me really young, so socioeconomically, they were always catching up. We lived in a trailer park when I was born. A place like Wake Forest, without [a scholarship covering] tuition, was pretty firmly out of our grasp. They had definitely [moved up] the socioeconomic ladder by the time I was 18, but I really wanted to go there. It was always a matter of knowing I needed to work for a scholarship. I used to be in choirs, and we would go and sing at Wake Forest.
