    Adolf Juzwenko Ossolineum. 200 years with the people in search of their way to independence In the 1790s, count Józef Maksymilian Ossoli ński was in Vienna, seeking support for patriotic initiatives intended at preventing the collapse of the Polish state. Because it turned out to be impossible to prevent, Ossoli ński decided he should engage himself in the protection of national identity, historical memory and the will of the people to remain themselves. The family establishment of the Ossolineum Library, presented by the count to the emperor of Austria on 18 October 1816, was approved on 4 June 1817. It was indeed a success – after nearly twenty years of attempts, taken during various conflicts tearing Europe, Ossoli ński managed to give his compatriots an institution which proved to be increasingly successful in supporting Polish resistance against forced Russification and Germanisation. At the turn of the 20 th century, the arrangement of political powers in Europe had changed radically. When the Institute celebrated its 100 th anniversary in 1917, Europe had been at war for three years. The conflict continued between powers divided into two camps – Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. On the Eastern front, Germany and Austria-Hungary struggled against Russia, on the Western one – France and Great Britain fought against Germany. All parties were exhausted by the conflict, the armies – demoralised by Bolshevik propaganda. Eventually, United States' involvement determined the fate of the war. The chances for deep political changes in Europe grew. Nations of Europe, previously deprived of sovereignty, had begun to reach for independence. When the war ended, on 11 November 1918, Poles had begun to build their own state.

Its history traces the evolution both of Western civi­ lization and of Man’s Inhumanity to Man. Its stories tell of the rise and tragic fall of nations, dynas­ ties and families, including my own. My parents introduced me to its diversity, breadth and depth of perspective, and, might I add, its wisdom. Then, during my first visit in 1938 as a boy of twelve and the year of study in Switzerland that followed, Europe’s tastes, smells, sounds, architecture and attitudes assaulted the senses. My career took me and my family to live in Europe for 25 years. Even to this day, Louise and I spend a portion of each year there. Picking up the threads of the family saga, we visited old estates and met surviving Starzeriskis. Marysia offered a family history written by her father, Andrzej Starzenski. Krysia and Gabryela generously related some of their terrible wartime experiences. I commissioned researchers to seek out stories and pictures of our Starzenski forefathers (and foremothers), and in the process met Teresa, Susanna, Alessandro and other family members who recounted fragments of the past. Adam Zamoyski wove the information into a masterful family his­ tory, The Noble House of Starzenski, published in 1997. Yet wonderful pictures remained unpublished, poignant stories untold. As editor Mary Kadlecek and graphic artist Robert deVilleneuve digitized photos, laid them out album-style and added nar­ rative, it began to seem that we could keep alive not only fading photos, but also fading memories.

Every so often I come across a tidbit I think may interest others, and this is one of those times. It has to do with the feminine form of Polish surnames that are adjectival in form. One of the first things we researchers learn to deal with is that names such as Lewandowski or Nowotny have distinctive feminine forms, Lewandowska or Nowotna. We should expect our female ancestors to show up in Polish records under those forms, not under the masculine versions.

    STUDIES IN ANCIENT ART AND CIVILIZATION 13 Kraków 2009 Grzegorz Nieć Kraków-Wrocław Count StaniSłaW tarnoWSKi IN EGYPT IN 1858 AND HIS ACCOUNT OF THIS JOURNEY Polish travels to the Near East, including to Egypt, have a tradition going back to the Middle Ages. They spawned a rich literature in many published accounts and reminiscences, as well as in scholarly studies.1 Yet not all accounts and reminiscences, to say nothing of relevant correspondence, have appeared in print; many remain in manuscript awaiting interest from editors. Even those once published in book form or in magazines are by now difficult to obtain. Such important and interesting historical sources, often of considerable literary merit, could certainly add to our historical knowledge about styles of life and travel, and about past contacts of Europeans with Egypt’s ancient heritage and with it inhabitants. Among texts not so far published are the memoirs and correspondence of Stanisław tarnowski written in connection with his journey to Spain and the Near East which he made between November 1857 and April 1858. He wrote his reminiscences soon after he returned, never, however, intending to see them published. Until the 1990’s, his manuscripts were deposited in the PAU & PAN (respectively, Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and Polish Academy of Science) Library in Kraków and in the Jagiellonian Library.
