The Hour Record Game The Hour Record for bicycle is about to ride as long distance as possible in one hour on a velodrome. An hour record attempt demands performing on the edge of physical and mental capacity, and in order to beat the record the athlete has to prepare for months and years. As a simulacrum for such an attempt, as of 15th December 2015 at the A-Venue in Gothenburg, the composer, improviser, and in this case cyclist, Per Anders Nilsson challenged himself to cycle on an indoor trainer for 60 minutes at his lactate threshold: an average heart rate of 180 bpm. Video snippets from previous “real” attempts, as well as his heart bpm was displayed and used in the live electronic music that accompanied the event. Nilsson succeeded to meet his challenge, averaging 181 bpm during 60 minutes. As a voice- over to a video documentary of the event, the author shares memories and reflections from the performance, interspersed with quotes from previous and present hour record holders, as well as theoretical perspectives on subject matter. ADJUSTMENTS 1 - ZERO SETTING of the rear derailleur IMPORTANT! Resetting the rear derailleur to zero is a particularly delicate operation and must be carried out when the bicycle is stationary and placed on a stand. This is why it should be conducted only and exclusively by a Campagnolo Service Center, a Campagnolo Pro-shop or a mechanic specialised in mounting EPS groupsets. 1.1 - HOW TO RESET THE REAR DERAILLEUR TO ZERO During the first installation and in some cases when the rear wheel is replaced, if the set of sprockets of the new wheel is very different from the set of sprockets previously installed, it is necessary to conduct a more accurate adjustment by resetting the rear derailleur to zero. • During the resetting, the rear derailleur is shifted con- Left control lever Right control lever tinuously and this depends on how long the levers 2 (B - Fig.1) and 3 (C - Fig.1) , located on the rear derailleur control, are pressed. Unlike road cycling competitions where most racing is undertaken at submaximal power outputs, the shorter track events require the cyclist to tax maximally both the aerobic and anaerobic (oxygen independent) metabolic pathways. Elite track cyclists possess key physical and physiological attributes which are matched to the specific requirements of their events: these cyclists must have the appropriate genetic predisposition which is then maximised through effective training interventions. 4 Adjusting your gears and brakes Bike Maintenance Introduction For safe and happy cycling, it’s important to understand how to check your bicycle before you set off on your journey and how to keep it maintained for optimum performance. This series of guides, produced by Cycling UK, provides some basic tips on maintenance and repair. You’ll find most of the common issues covered: the basic checks you should carry out before setting off, the essential tools you should always carry, how to fix a puncture, and how to adjust your brake and gear cables. 3URLY 4RAVELERS#HECK Like a lot of our stuff, the motivation for producing a frame suited for travel sprung from our own experiences and desires. We’ve traveled with our bikes plenty and have wanted something easier to haul around in planes, trains, and automobiles. We dig the folders but wanted a normal bike, something ready for whatever terrain is beneath the wheels. We chose our Cross Check frame for this platform because of its proven versatility. Already well-known as an excellent do-all frame, friendly with skinny tires or fat, derailleurs or Singlespeed drive trains, the Cross Check takes just about anything you throw at it and handles it like a champ, on-road or off the beaten path. If you’ve owned one you know. We changed the name and color to distinguish it from a normal Cross Check, but the Travelers Check is otherwise the same animal. Mostly. Brazed into the top- and downtubes of the Travelers Check, S&S Machine Company’s BTCs (bicycle torque couplings) are machined stainless steel pieces that allow the bike to be broken into two halves for transport or storage. S&S calls them BTCs but they’re more commonly known as S&S Couplers. Other companies have designed bikes that split in half, but S&S couplers work so well we didn’t feel the need to design anything else. With the couplers installed, each tube end fits to the other via precision-machined teeth covered by a threaded sleeve. Properly lubed and tightened, the teeth resist torque forces while the threaded sleeve holds it together securely. -

QUICKSTART REAR DERAILLEUR 2004 - X.O,X.9, X.7, 5.0, 4.0, 3.0 SRAM rear derailleur's (RD’s) offer very precise shifting performance, easy adjustability, and easy maintenance. This Quickstart is designed to give the rider the maximum performance and longevity of his or her SRAM ESP drivetrain system, plus valuable custom tuning information. SRAM, of course, includes a detailed operating instruction manual with all of its products, in a wide variety of languages. This is a good place to begin when installing a SRAM derailleur. If you do not have this guide please contact your dealer or request the guide from SRAM direct via www.sram.com (Operating instruction reference # 4005). GENERAL INFORMATION Before installing any drivetrain components, the rider needs to realize that all of the drivetrain components work together in concert. This means that it is best to inspect/replace all of the drive components; the chain (is it worn, or bent or rusted?), the cog set (are the teeth worn, are the cogs tight on the free-hub body?), the crank set (are the spindle bolts and chain-ring bolts tight? Are the chain-rings straight, or are the teeth worn or smashed from rocks?), the bottom bracket (does it spin smooth, is there any free-play) and, very important, the rear derailleur hanger. INSTALLATION RD HANGER TIPS: Many modern mountain bikes have replaceable rear derailleur hangers which can be replaced if the hanger becomes damaged. What's important is that the hanger is tight (meaning check the tiny bolts or chain-ring bolt that holds them on) and that the hanger is straight.
