As a result of a successful search in the previous year we were joined this year by our new Medievalist, Assistant Professor Jonathan Conant. Two other searches launched last year were successfully concluded this fall: we will therefore be joined next fall by Professor Beshara Doumani as the new Director of the Middle East Center and as member of the department; and by Associate Professor Rebecca Nedostup as our new specialist in Modern Chinese History. Yet another search, launched this year, and efficiently conducted by Hal Cook, culminated in the hire of Assistant Professor Jo Guldi, who will join us in 2013 as our new expert of Modern British History, after spending her last year at Harvard’s Society of Fel- lows. Along with the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, we were also engaged in a search for a position in the “History of Portugal and the Portuguese Empire (15th-18th centuries),” ably chaired by Jim Green; we hope very much to make an appointment in the near future.

Along with searches in Modern China and in Early Medieval Mediterranean, we pursued a target of opportunity appointment in the Modern Middle East, and a preselect appointment in East-Central Europe. Together with Africana Studies we sought a director for the future Center on Slavery and Justice, and, finally, we cooperated with the Watson Institute in a search for a new Diplo- macy Studies appointment. Many of these initiatives are still on going. As for now, I am delighted to welcome our new outstanding medievalist, Jonathan Conant, who brings with him also expertise in early Islam and North Africa. Three are in the US Olympic Trial Finals With an all-Buckeye final at 97 kg, Ohio State is guaranteed an Olympian this summer USA WRESTLING SITE COLUMBUS, Ohio – Friday at the USA Wrestling Olympic Team Trials was a long day of wrestling, but it was a good day of wrestling for former Buckeyes Kollin Moore and Joey McKenna. Moore and McKenna are both set to appear in the Olympic Team Trial finals on Saturday, vying for a spot in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo. Moore is in the finals of the 97 kg weight class and waiting for him is the reigning Olympic champion and fellow Buckeye Kyle Snyder. That means Ohio State will have at least one Olympian this summer. McKenna will square-off with Jordan Oliver in the finals of the 65 kg class. The winner of that weight class will still have to qualify the weight for the Olympics at the World Olympic Qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 6-9. All of the Final X Championship Series will be best-of-three bouts. The finals will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app. How They Got There McKenna took down James Green (TMWC/ SERTC) in his quarterfinal match 12-1 and then bested the top-seed, Zain Retherford (TMWC/ NLWC) 8-5 with two late takedowns in the second period.

Chamizo scored first with a pair of takedowns to take a 4-0 lead. Burroughs got on the board with a takedown of his own to cut the deficit to just two at the break. Chamizo scored a step-out point early in the second period, but Burroughs responded with a takedown with just less than a minute left in the match to cut the deficit to 5-4. He went up 6-5 with a double-leg takedown and held on for the win. The "Super Match" was contested at 74 kg/163 pounds. The match came to be as a result of a social media exchange between the two world champions after a match in the NCAA wrestling season featured top-ranked Seth Gross of South Dakota State moving up a weight class to face top-ranked Bryce Meredith of Wyoming in a dual meet in January. Burroughs was the 2017 UWW World Champion at 74 kg/163 pounds, while Chamizo won the 70 kg/154 pounds weight class at the World Championships.

    2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT 09/01/16-08/31/17 2017 WORLD MEDALISTS 2017 WORLD CHAMPIONS USA Wrestling capped an incredible 2016-17 season with historic performances at the Cadet, Junior, U23, and Senior World Championships. Team USA captured an all-time record THIRTY TWO medals at these events, including fourteen individual World Champions. Women’s Freestyle finished 2nd in the team race at the Senior World Championships, with Junior Men’s Freestyle and Senior Men’s Freestyle both claiming the #1 spot. We’re excited to share our year in review with you, and here’s to another record breaking year on the horizon. U-S-A!!! Logan Stieber takes home gold and Alli Ragan DEC 2016 gets silver at the World Championships in Budapest, featuring Non-Olympic weights. USA Wrestling launches the “No Missed Meals” campaign with Chobani, a program JAN 2017 geared towards youth wrestlers, coaches, and parents about the importance of proper nutrition and de-emphasizing weight cutting. Amid intense geo-political animosity, Men’s Freestyle travels to FEB 2017 Kermanshah, Iran to compete in the World Cup. The Iranians were incredibly welcoming and hospitable during our stay. Team USA finished in 2nd place, losing to Iran in the Gold Medal Match. – USA Wrestling enters long term event broadcast rights deals with both FloWrestling MARCH 2017 and TrackWrestling.
