The first three months of the year were particularly poor with overall numbers and species diversity lower than normal. A public mothing event held at Ventnor Botanical Gardens at the end of the month produced some good moths including presumed immigrant Agrotera nemoralis, which was first recorded on the Island in 2015. A prolonged spell of hot dry weather in June and July saw a big change in moth numbers and a decent run of migrant moths. A Druid (Aedia funesta) was trapped in Totland, there are only 12 previous UK records of this species, two of which were from the same site in Totland. A Light Crimson Underwing (Catocala promissa) was recorded at St. Catherine’s Point and a Dark Crimson Underwing (Catocala sponsa) at Bonchurch. Other good migrant moths included Splendid Brocade (Lacanobia splendens) and four Catoptria verellus, all from Shanklin. Another five Agrotera nemoralis were trapped in Bonchurch and Shanklin. The non-migrant highlight was undoubtedly finding Suspected (Parastichtis suspecta) at St. Catherine’s Point. There are only two previous county records, from July 1897 and August 1963.

  • Identification of Leaf-Mining Lepidoptera
    THE IDENTIFICATION OF LEAF-MINING LEPIDOPTERA INTRODUCTION The aim of this booklet is to enable the user to identify most of the leaf-mining lepidoptera. It is not possible to cover all the leaf-mining species in such a small booklet, however over 90% of the true mining species should be identifiable with its use. The guide has been kept as simple as possible. Along with the usual keys I have added a chart on hawthorn to assist with the identification of the Nepticulidae. Much of the information contained herein is gleaned from volumes 1 and 2 of “The Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland” with some addition notes supplied by A. Maitland Emmet along with the occasional modification of my own. I have also included within the birch feeding miners a key written by David Manning on the Eriocraniidae. A word of warning before you start to look at mines, some flies, beetles, wasps and sawflies also produce larvae that mine leaves, so it is possible that these could be mistaken for lepidopterous mines. A good guide is that the larvae of the Nepticulidae usually leave their frass, droppings, in a continuous line and the larvae of the Gracillariidae usually pile their frass in a particular place inside the mine; there are, of course, a few exceptions to this. Generally flies etc. leave their frass in irregular patches and usually there is much less frass in the mines of flies etc. than in those produced by lepidoptera. A further guide is to look at the list of foodplants which follows, if the plant you have found a mine in is not in this list it is quite likely that it will not be a lepidopteran mine.

In total, 14 species belonging 3 genera are reported for the studied region among which Macrocentrus bicolor CURTIS, 1833, M. resinellae (LINNAEUS, 1758) and Orgilus (Orgilus) radialis JAKIMAVICIUS, 1972 are recorded for the first time from Turkey. The numbers of species of each genus are as follows: Macrocentrinae; Macrocentrus CURTIS, 1833: 7, Kerorgilus van ACHTERBERG, 1985: 1, and Orgilinae; Orgilus HALIDAY, 1833: 6. Introduction Macrocentrinae is a medium-sized subfamily containing nearly 236 species described worlwide belonging to eight genera (YU et al. 2012). The vast majority species are soli- tary or gregarious koinobiont endoparasitoids of lepidopteran larvae. Polyembryony (usually resulting in gregarious broods) frequently occurs in the genus Macrocentrus CURTIS 1833. They attack concealed microlepidopteran larvae such as Gelechiidae, Oecophoridae, Sesiidae and Tortricidae (SHAW & HUDDLESTON 1991).

    Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR23 J (Creteway Down, Holy Well and the Hope Farm area) Most of the interest in this tetrad is provided by the section of the Folkestone Downs escarpment that runs along the southern edge. Creteway Down attracts good numbers of common migrants in season and scarcer species have included Long-eared Owl, Firecrest, Garden and Grasshopper Warblers, Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, Nightingale and Redstart, whilst it is a regular haunt for Ring Ouzel in autumn. The Downs provide a good vantage point for recording visual migration and more notable species have included Honey Buzzard, Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Golden Plover, Ruff, Short-eared Owl and Hawfinch. The spring at Holy Well holds breeding Moorhen and wintering Water Rail, and occasionally Woodcock, whilst Firecrest, Nightingale and Black Redstart have also occurred. Looking west over Creteway Down The fields to the north of Crete Road East can produce Wheatear and Whinchat, particularly if left as stubble in autumn, and a Tawny Pipit was seen in September 1993. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls can often be found in late summer/early autumn. The Hope Farm area was one of the last remaining haunts of Turtle Dove and Corn Buntings also formerly bred here. Looking north across the fields to Hope Farm Spotted Flycatcher at Creteway Down Pied Flycatcher at Creteway Down Waxwings have twice been noted in the tetrad – a flock of 12 by Encliffe Farm in January 2011 and a flock of about.20 by Coombe Farm in January 2013. Redstart at Creteway Down Ring Ouzel at Creteway Down Access and Parking There are several lay-bys along Crete Road East which enable access to Creteway Down and also along Crete Road West which enable access to Holy Well.

    The Smaller Moths of Staffordshire By R.G.Warren Staffordshire Biological Recording Scheme Publication No. 13 1988 ISBN 0 905080 77 7 ISSN 0309 2100 Preface It is 25 years since Richard Warren produced his Smaller Moths of Staffordshire and it is now long out-of-print. It is a monumental work whose small size belies the work involved in its production. Richard was "into" micros at a time few others were. His knowledge of the micros of the county was encyclopaedic which is remarkable when you consider that he did not drive and his main source of identification of the micros was Meyrick's Revised Handbook of British Lepidoptera which, as those of you familiar with it will know, contains no illustrations save a few showing wing venation! Later there was the 2 volume British Tortricoid Moths and the first volumes of the Handbook of Moths of Great Britain and Ireland but these still covered only a small part of the micro-lepidoptera. He made frequent visits to the British Museum where he would consult those legends of Lepidoptera; Aggasiz, Bradley, Heath, Pelham-Clinton, Tremewan and the like. Richard could not have foreseen the rapid growth in interest in Lepidoptera and particularly the sudden availability of identification literature, the on-line sources and digital photography, all of which have contributed to an interest in the Micro-lepidoptera. I thought it appropriate to make this work available as an historical reference and to work towards updating it over the coming year. Please note, however, that it retains the nomenclature that was extant at the time of its publication.
