Jolly, Professor, Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Abstract Culturing species resilient to drought and stressful water quality conditions may be a significant part of the future of African aquaculture. Air breathing fishes potentially have a role in low-management culture systems for small farms because dissolved oxygen does not threaten the fish crop. The African lungfish (Protopterus sp) is advantageous because it is: an indigenous fish with good flesh quality, an air-breather, and a biocontrol agent against schistosome vector snails. Wild lungfish stocks are declining and national strategies to protect its natural population are lacking. Lungfish is highly valued as food, has certain nutraceutical benefits and supports livelihoods of many communities in Uganda. A variety of lungfish products on markets include fried pieces (54%), cured/smoked fish (28%), whole fresh gutted fish (10%) and soup (8%). Lungfish products are increasingly found alongside tilapia and Nile perch in rural and urban markets with cured products being exported to Kenya, DRC and Southern Sudan.

The correlation coefficient exhibited allometric (+,-) and isometric patterns in different types of fish species assessed in the present study. The fish were measured and calculated in correlation coefficient (r2). This present study envisages the new arena of formulation of mathematical modelling using fish model.     Sohn and Kim Applied Microscopy (2021) 51:3 Applied Microscopy https://doi.org/10.1186/s42649-021-00052-z RESEARCH Open Access Ultrastructure of the fertilized egg envelope from Melanotaenia praecox, Melanotaeniidae, Teleostei Joon Hyung Sohn1 and Dong Heui Kim2* Abstract We examined the morphology of fertilized egg and ultrastructures of fertilized egg envelopes of dwarf rainbowfish (Melanotaenia praecox) belong to Melanotaeniidae using light and electron microscopes. The fertilized eggs were spherical with adhesive filament, transparent, demersal, and had a narrow perivitelline space and small oil droplets. The size of fertilized egg was 1.02 ± 0.18 mm (n = 30), and there were two kinds of adhesive filament on the fertilized eggs. The long and thick (diameter 12.22 ± 0.52 μm, n = 20) adhesive filaments were only at the area of animal pole, and short and thin (diameter 1.99 ± 0.23 μm, n = 20) adhesive filaments were around the long filaments. A micropyle was conical shaped with adhesive filament and located near the animal pole of egg. The outer surface of fertilized egg was rough side. Also, the total thickness of the fertilized egg envelope was about 7.46 ± 0.41 μm(n = 20), the fertilized egg envelope consisted of two layers, an inner lamellae layer and an outer layer with high electron-density. And the inner layer was 8 layers. Collectively, these morphological characteristics and adhesive property of fertilized egg with adhesive filaments, and ultrastructures of micropyle, outer surface, and section of fertilized egg envelope are showed species specificity. Mathematical modeling of the genetic amelioration of horizontally transferred genomic islands in bacterial genomes Abstract: Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) within bacteria studies has dated back several decades and has been well documented. Current studies are still undergoing to dwell deeper into its effects within phylogeny and evolution alongside improvement in new technology and techniques. Although HGT is well understood, amelioration the process where the base DNA composition of the transferred genes from a donor undergoes nucleotide substitutions over time and reflects similarly in DNA composition to the recipient genome, is understudied. The study of amelioration could enhance the understanding of many aspects such as the mutation process of transferred material (preference in composition mutation, directional mutation, mutation rate), and the effects of base composition of recipient on the amelioration process. Hence a logical yet practical mathematical model is needed to model amelioration. As foreign inserts, 4 known genomic islands (GI) were used to model their amelioration process towards compositional profiles of genomes of organisms representing distant taxa and different GC content, i.e. Bacillus subtilis 168, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA01, Escherichia coli K12, Xylellafastidiosa 9a5c and Streptomyces griseus NBRC 13350. Compositional methods were used on each combination of GI (tester) and recipient (target) whereby k-mer words (dimers, trimers, tetramers) were calculated and ranked based by their frequencies in descending order of oligonucleotide usage (OU). A logistic probability function is then used to convert the ranked frequencies into a probability which gives the likelihood that at any given position the nucleotide will be substituted into another.
