F. Marinho1, Fernando C. P. Dagosta1 and José L. O. Birindelli2 A new species of Hemigrammus is described from the middle rio Tocantins basin, central Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by having a black midlateral stripe on the body extending from the posterior margin of the eye to the median caudal-fin rays. Mature males possess dorsal-, pelvic-, and anal-fin rays elongate, features that also help to recognize the new species. Although the new species is described in Hemigrammus, some specimens present a complete series of pored scales in the lateral line. A discussion about the generic allocation of the new species is presented. Uma espécie nova de Hemigrammus é descrita da bacia do médio rio Tocantins, Brasil central. A espécie nova distingue-se de seus congêneres por apresentar uma faixa mediana negra na lateral do corpo desde a margem posterior do olho até os raios medianos da nadadeira caudal. Machos maduros apresentam os raios das nadadeiras dorsal, pélvica e anal alongados, características que também auxiliam o reconhecimento da espécie. Apesar da espécie nova ser descrita em Hemigrammus, alguns exemplares possuem série completa de escamas perfuradas na linha lateral. Stefan Koerber Friesenstr. 11, 45476 Muelheim, Germany, [email protected] Since the beginning of the binominal nomenclature authors dedicate names of new species described by them to persons they want to honour, mostly to the collectors or donators of the specimens the new species is based on, to colleagues, or, in fewer cases, to family members. This paper aims to provide a list of these names used for freshwater fishes from Argentina. All listed species have been reported from localities in Argentina, some regardless the fact that by our actual knowledge their distribution in this country might be doubtful. Years of birth and death could be taken mainly from obituaries, whereas those of living persons or publicly unknown ones are hard to find and missing in some accounts. Although the real existence of some persons from ancient Greek mythology might not be proven they have been included here, while the names of indigenous tribes and spirits are not. If a species name does not refer to a first family name, cross references are provided. Current systematical stati were taken from the online version of Catalog of Fishes. T. Lima1, Wolmar B. Wosiacki2 and Cristiane S. Ramos2 A new Hemigrammus species is described from tributaries of the igarapé Juruti Grande and rio Arapiuns, lower rio Amazonas, Pará State, Brazil. The new species can be easily diagnosed from all its congeners, except from Hemigrammus stictus (Durbin), by possessing a single, large humeral spot which extends longitudinally from the fifth or sixth to the posterior margin of eighth to tenth, lateral line scales. It can be distinguished from Hemigrammus stictus by possessing a pronounced upper, anteriorly- oriented extension in the humeral blotch, conferring an inverted-comma shape to it, and by displaying a distinct life color pattern. Uma nova espécie de Hemigrammus é descrita de afluentes do igarapé Juruti Grande e do rio Arapiuns, baixo rio Amazonas, Estado do Pará, Brasil. A nova espécie pode ser facilmente diagnosticada de todos seus congêneres, exceto Hemigrammus stictus (Durbin), por possuir uma única, grande mancha umeral que se estende da quinta ou sexta escamas à margem posterior da oitava à décima escama da linha lateral. Ela pode ser distinguida de Hemigrammus stictus por possuir uma extensão da mancha umeral pronunciada e anteriormente orientada, o que lhe confere uma forma de vírgula invertida e por possuir um padrão de colorido distinto em vida. A New Characid Fish, Hyphessobrycon Hexastichos (Characiformes: Characidae) from Chapada Dos Parecis, Mato Grosso, Brazil

Bertaco and Tiago P. Carvalho A new characid species, Hyphessobrycon hexastichos, is described from the upper rio Tapajós, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The new species is distinguished from all other Hyphessobrycon species by the presence of black zigzag longitudinal lines between longitudinal rows of scales in the lateral of body, maxilla with 3-5 teeth, i,6 pelvic-fin rays, 18-22 branched anal-fin rays, 4 scale rows above and 3 scale rows below of lateral line, lateral line with 9-13 perforated scales, and 33-35 scales in a longitudinal series. Uma nova espécie de caracídeo, Hyphessobrycon hexastichos é descrita para alto rio Tapajós, Mato Grosso, Brasil. A nova espécie distingue-se das demais espécies de Hyphessobrycon pela presença de linhas longitudinais pretas em ziguezague entre as faixas de escamas longitudinais na lateral do corpo, 3-5 dentes no maxilar, i,6 raios na nadadeira pélvica, 18-22 raios ramificados na nadadeira anal, 4 escamas acima e 3 escamas abaixo da linha lateral, 9-13 escamas perfuradas na linha lateral, e 33-35 escamas em uma série longitudinal. Jolly, Professor, Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Abstract Culturing species resilient to drought and stressful water quality conditions may be a significant part of the future of African aquaculture. Air breathing fishes potentially have a role in low-management culture systems for small farms because dissolved oxygen does not threaten the fish crop. The African lungfish (Protopterus sp) is advantageous because it is: an indigenous fish with good flesh quality, an air-breather, and a biocontrol agent against schistosome vector snails. Wild lungfish stocks are declining and national strategies to protect its natural population are lacking. Lungfish is highly valued as food, has certain nutraceutical benefits and supports livelihoods of many communities in Uganda. A variety of lungfish products on markets include fried pieces (54%), cured/smoked fish (28%), whole fresh gutted fish (10%) and soup (8%). Lungfish products are increasingly found alongside tilapia and Nile perch in rural and urban markets with cured products being exported to Kenya, DRC and Southern Sudan.
