Celebrate 50 Years of Motown with the Contours to Kick Off the Labor Day Weekend Celebration at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie For release: Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012 Contact: Jessica Di Santo – (317) 229-7082 Celebrate 50 Years of Motown with The Contours to Kick Off the Labor Day Weekend Celebration at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie INDIANAPOLIS- The Contours, featuring Sylvester Potts, will bring Hitsville USA to Marsh Symphony on the Prairie as the band belts out Motown favorites Thursday and Friday, August 30 and 31, at 8 p.m. on the stage of the Conner Prairie Amphitheater. Known as “Motown’s No. 1 Party Group” for more than 50 years, The Contours have been leaders in that genre since the 1960s. The group’s hit “Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance),” featured in the 1987 Academy Award winning film Dirty Dancing, is one of few recordings that have hit the Top 20 in separate decades. Other hits include “Shake Sherry,” “Can You Jerk Like Me,” “That Day When She Needed Me,” and “Just a Little Misunderstanding.” Detroit native Sylvester Potts, a member of The Contours within months of its founding in 1961, is joined by fellow Detroiters Tony Womack, Kim Green and Tee Turner for these performances. Please note that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra does not perform during these concerts. Adult tickets are $22 in advance and $27 at the gate. Children’s tickets (ages 2-12) are $11 and $13 respectively. Tickets may be purchased at any Marsh, MainStreet or O’Malia’s supermarket location. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Hilbert Circle Theatre Box Office, by calling (317) 639-4300 and toll free at (800) 366-8457 or via www.IndianapolisSymphony.org. Premium Parking passes may be purchased for $20 each exclusively through the Hilbert Circle Theatre Box Office. All other Conner Prairie parking is free-of-charge and there are many volunteers available to assist patrons in carrying their belongings from their vehicles to their seats. Guests may bring their own food, beverages (including alcohol), blankets, and lawn chairs or reserve a table for up to 10 people just feet from the stage for $59 (plus the ticket price). The public can stay up-to-date on weather and traffic conditions by tuning in to WIBC (93.1 FM), the official radio station of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie. Patrons can sign up for the ISO’s mSymphony weather text message service by texting WEATHER [date of performance] (e.g. WEATHER AUGUST 30) to 24025. This service will be available for every performance and will be updated by the ISO as conditions change. Due to road construction on the northeast side of the Indianapolis metropolitan area, the ISO and Conner Prairie encourage patrons to “Know Before You Go.” WIBC-FM offers the latest traffic updates for patrons en route to Marsh Symphony on the Prairie. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

From the age of eight, Stevenson performed in a singing trio with his younger brothers. In 1950, the group won first place at Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in New York City. However, Stevenson’s musical career halted in 1953 when his mother, the group’s coach and producer, when his mother, the group’s coach and producer, passed away from cancer. Stevenson attended Detroit’s Northeastern High School. Stevenson joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956, where he was part of a special unit that organized entertainment for the troops.     "KICK OUT THE JAMS!" Detroit Rock & Roll by Ben Edmonds For our purposes, the story of Detroit rock & roll begins on September 3, 1948, when a little-known local performer named John Lee Hooker entered United Sound Studios for his first recording session. Rock & roll was still an obscure rhythm & blues catchphrase, certainly not yet a musical genre, and Hooker's career trajectory had been that of the standard-issue bluesman. A native of the Mississippi Delta, he had drifted north for the same reason that eastern Europeans and Kentucky hillbillies, Greeks and Poles and Arabs and Asians and Mexicans had all been migrating toward Michigan in waves for the first half of the 20th Century. "The Motor City it was then, with the factories and everything, and the money was flowing," Hooker told biographer Charles Shaar Murray." All the cars were being built there. Detroit was the city then. Work, work, work, work. Plenty work, good wages, good money at that time."1 He worked many of those factories, Ford and General Motors among them, and at night he plied the craft of the bluesman in bars, social clubs and at house parties. But John Lee Hooker was no ordinary bluesman, and the song he cut at the tail of his first session, "Boogie Chillen," was no ordinary blues. Accompanied only by the stomp of his right foot, his acoustic guitar hammered an insistent pattern, partially based on boogie-woogie piano, that Hooker said he learned from his stepfather back in Mississippi as "country boogie." Informed by the urgency and relentless drive of his Detroit assembly line experiences, John Lee's urban guitar boogie would become a signature color on the rock & roll palette, as readily identifiable as Bo Diddley's beat or Chuck Berry's ringing chords.
