IT’S TIME TO CURE CONGESTION SOUTH OF THE FRASER – INCLUDING SURREY AND LANGLEY The Mayors’ Council has heard loud and clear from Metro Vancouver residents: it is time to cure congestion. Traffic on our roads and overcrowding on our transit system frustrate commuters every single day and it’s affecting our quality of life, our economy, and our environment. We need all levels of government working together to fix this problem, and we need to make sure transportation is a key issue in the May 2017 provincial election. Learn more at www.curecongestion.ca. TRANSPORTATION CHALLENGES IN THE SOUTH OF FRASER Here South of Fraser, our population is growing and our transportation system hasn’t been keeping up. As a result, SkyTrain is often overcrowded during rush hour and stations are 30 years old and need upgrading. Growing neighbourhoods in Surrey and Langley need more bus service. And the 75-year-old Pattullo Bridge must be replaced to meet modern seismic and safety standards. REAL TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SOUTH OF F R A S E R The good news is – we can keep Metro Vancouver moving and help cure congestion. The first step is to complete the 10-Year Vision for Metro Vancouver Transit and Transportation, a plan for more transit services, better roads and active transportation infrastructure across the region and right here in the South of Fraser, including: 1. New rapid transit projects for a growing population o Surrey LRT: Connecting Guildford, Surrey City Centre, Newton, Fleetwood, Clayton & Langley Centre 2. Better, more frequent public transit service o Upgrading SkyTrain: More rail cars, increased frequency, and SkyTrain station upgrades o More Bus Service: New B-Lines between Scott Road Station and Newton Exchange (Scott Road and 72nd Avenue), Langley and Pitt Meadows (200th Street), Surrey Centre and Langley (Fraser Highway), and an extension of the 96 B-Line to White Rock (King George Boulevard and 152nd Street); and increased frequency on bus routes on important streets such as 24th, 64th, 88th Avenues, and Nordel Way. o Accessibility: More HandyDART service for people who can’t use the conventional transit system 3. Improving road conditions for drivers o Pattullo Bridge: Replacing the aging Pattullo with a new four-lane bridge o Better, Safer Roads: Improvements to the over 700 lane-km of the major road network South of the Fraser to improve safety and reduce bottlenecks BETTER COMMUTES THAT SAVE YOU TIME As the region grows, congestion will increase and travel times will get longer in the future. With new transportation investments, the 10-Year Vision will reduce travel times across the region.
