After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

In the Automatic one receives the impression of accomplished hands playing the keys. “Mechanical touch” has disappeared. It reproduces the interpreta¬ tions of the great artists as they themselves played that particular music. A new and wonderful invention The AccompanO enables one to regulate and phrase the music from a distance. As shown in the illustration, the singer is playing her own accompaniment. With very little practice the accompaniment can be played in this manner with far better effects than if played by hand. -

The ISO will be among the first symphonies to present the Music of Prince concert. Conductor Brent Havens explores Prince’s eclectic body of work taking guests through a symphonic journey of his biggest hits—“Purple Rain,” “Kiss,” “When Doves Cry,” “Raspberry Beret,” “U Got the Look,” “Little Red Corvette,” and “I Would Die 4 U,” among others. Known for stretching the boundaries of music and seamlessly tying together multiple genres of pop, funk, R&B, folk-rock, hip-hop, jazz, soul, new wave, and psychedelic, Prince Rogers Nelson died April 21, 2016, at age 57. Prince sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for the film Purple Rain. He was the first artist to have a No. 1 album, No. 1 song, and No. 1 film in the same week. Prince Tribute Ride Jennifer Sage April 2016 The world lost yet another icon of the music world. First, David Bowie, then Glenn Frey, now Prince. 2016 has not been very kind to the 1980’s. Those of us who grew up in that decade have been hit especially hard, as the songs from these musical geniuses are etched into our psyches and are a huge part of our adolescence, teen years and early adulthood. www.indoorcyclingassociation.com Prince Tribute Objective: Threshold climbing intervals Normally I try to find songs with a bpm that matches the cadence I want my riders to latch on to. But with a tribute ride, it isn’t always possible since I wanted to play iconic songs that I loved and I knew my riders would appreciate. That meant that at times they didn’t match the terrain I wanted. I did that for recoveries, as it’s easier to ask riders to pedal at their own cadence when they are not using the beat to help them push harder. Warm-up Kiss, 3:45, 111 bpm I Wanna Melt With U, 3:51, 102 bpm Ride between 80 and 90 rpm, gradually increase resistance and intensity to moderate level. First climbing interval 1999, 3:38, 119 bpm Little Red Corvette, 4:57, 123 bpm America (Grace on Thee WeRk), 5:03, 136 bpm Use 1999 to ease into the climb, resistance loading. Keep intensity moderate, cadence 60 rpm. On the second song (Little Red Corvette), raise the resistance to bring intensity to just below threshold, cadence on the beat at 62 rpm. -

In their works, all four women boldly reject the misogyny prevalent in early modern culture; however, they do so without being able to withdraw from the culture that contributed to such rhetoric, thereby writing from the periphery. -
