THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2018 GUN RUNNER DRAWS SIRES WITH FIRST RUNNERS IN 2018: WHERE'S THE VALUE? by Chris McGrath TEN IN PEGASUS This is Part II of a three-part series exploring Kentucky sires that offer the best value. To read Part I, click here. It's hard to know quite what Cairo Prince (Pioneerof The Nile) (Airdrie, $25,000) must do to live up to his phenomenal sales debut: very few sires get two fee hikes before they have had a runner. He caught a rising tide in sharing a sire with American Pharoah and Classic Empire, and then blew everyone away with his physicals. Things have gone so dreamily so far that he is nearly on a hiding to nothing, but if enough of them can run then even his revised fee could easily hold up. Having started with the highest fee of his intake, Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song) (Three Chimneys, $30,000) punched his weight impressively with his first weanlings and his yearlings followed through to put him top of the averages, at $169,190. He represents a pretty obvious package, and soaked up a lot more action than some of his sire's other sons. Thank you… _____________________________________________________ SANTA ANITA (THE GREAT RACE PLACE) Friday, May 5, 2017 FOR AMUSEMENT---AND NOT BEMUSEMENT---ONLY!!! (Of course, these are recommendations only, and there are no guarantees in this sport, but that is what generates its mystique. And so, please follow your own heart and mind, considering me as a mere advisor, when making your selections. In any event, I do wish you all the best in your quest to “predict the future,” because it ain’t easy. And remember, horses, just like us, have aches and pains, headaches, suffer fatigue, etc. Try not to get mad at me, I usually have excellent days, occasionally, not-so-excellent days: with all of the informative past performance data we handicappers have in front of us, we have no idea how a particular horse feels at race time. By way of example, maybe that 50/1 colt is in a big hurry because he has a hot fillie waiting for him back at the barn…so please stick with me if there are a few “speed-bumps” along the way.) This analysis is prepared under the reasonable assumption that (i) all turf races will be run on a “firm” turf track, and (ii) all dirt races will be run on a track graded “fast.” Should different conditions exist at post time for a given race, please temper these selections with your own best judgment in light of less-than ideal conditions. -

(Thursday, May 11, 2017) – Five days removed from a fourth-place effort in the $2,395,800 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I), John Oxley ’s Classic Empire continued his preparation for the May 20 Preakness (GI) with a jog under Martin Rivera at 6 a.m. (all times Eastern) on Thursday at Churchill Downs. Classic Empire marked trainer Mark Casse ’s fourth starter in the Kentucky Derby ( Seaside Retreat , 2006; Prospective , 2012; Danzig Moon , 2015) but this year was different than the others, according to the trainer’s son. “There was added pressure of being one of the favorites this year,” assistant trainer Norm Casse said. “We walk over with every horse wanting to win but it was a different feeling walking over for the Derby. We were walking with a purpose. “It didn’t work out completely in our favor but this year’s Derby was really special. Our entire family, both sides, was there to cheer us on. That’s what the Derby is all about.” Classic Empire is expected to gallop Friday morning at 6 a.m. and van to Pimlico on Sunday. LOOKIN AT LEE, HENCE, GUNNEVERA TRAIN FOR PREAKNESS – Going to the track an hour after Classic Empire was Derby runner-up L and N Racing ’s Lookin At Lee . The Steve Asmussen trainee galloped one mile and visited the starting gate and was followed 20 minutes later by Calumet Farm ’s Hence , the 11 th -place Derby finisher, who had a similar exercise. -

He only got into 19 of Harding’s 30 games. He was 1-of-4 for the line, and 6-of-13 from the field. Clinton had four assists, four turnovers, seven steals and 20 re- bounds. His season high was four points. But Friday afternoon at Harding Academy, they handed out a $1,000 scholarship and a new award named after Clinton. Why? “He knew his role, played hard in practice and kept team morale high,” said Tom Murrey, a lawyer at FedEx who was a member of that 1976 team. “He went on to do great things in life and he was the best AP teammate I ever had.” John Velazquez rides Always Dreaming to victory in the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Who's Hot? Who's Not?
Who’s hot? Who’s not? Reprinted from Horse Racing Nation Who's Hot Gunnevera -- In the time it took the son of Dialed In to go from last to first in the Fountain of Youth, it was demonstrated he possesses everything necessary to become a Kentucky Derby winner. It was the perfect progression from start one, to start two, of his 3yo season. Tapwrit -- The $1.2 million yearling purchase has found his groove at Tampa Bay Downs. His fast finish in the Sam F. Davis was validated with a big win in the Tampa Bay Derby. Improving in every start, the son of Tapit is clearly headed in the right direction. McCraken - Despite suffering a minor setback, the undefeated son of Ghostzapper appears to be right back on track. He worked four furlongs today, and looks to have plenty of time to be ready for Keeneland's Blue Grass. He was also flattered by Tapwrit's impressive win. Girvin -- The son of Tale of Ekati seemingly came from nowhere to a strong win in the Risen Star for trainer, Joe Sharp. A similar type of performance could put him in the Louisiana Derby winner's circle and on the fast track to Louisville. One Liner -- It's been a few weeks, but take your pick as far as which Pletcher (Tapwrit or One Liner) was more impressive in their coming out party. With only one more prep coming, look for the Into Mischief colt to only get stronger in his next. J Boys Echo -- It has been steady improvement for this well bred Dale Romans charge. -
May01/2021 Kentucky Derby Wager Guide Churchill Downs
1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.
