(Tuesday, April 25, 2017) – Peacock Racing Stables ’ Gunnevera , a three-time graded stakes winner and a millionaire in his young career, took his first steps on the main track at Churchill Downs on Tuesday morning with exercise rider Victor Farrel aboard. On hand to supervise the morning activity over a fast track was trainer Antonio Sano and Solomon Del-Valle , part of the ownership group. This is the first time for Sano and Del-Valle at Churchill Downs and they both plan to remain in Louisville through the $2 million Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I) on May 6. “This is the first day of 52,” said Del-Valle, who lives in Venezuela. “I am not going back home. I am here for the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont.” Third in the Florida Derby (GI) in his most recent start, Gunnevera galloped an easy mile over a fast track after the morning renovation break during the 8:30-8:45 window reserved for Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses. “I liked what I saw this morning,” Sano said of Gunnevera, who arrived at Churchill Downs late Saturday night. “Tomorrow he will go a mile and a half and I plan to work Saturday morning.” Gunnevera has won graded stakes in three states, but in his previous trip to Kentucky delivered the poorest performance of his nine-race career with a fifth-place finish in the Breeders’ Futurity (GI) at Keeneland.

He only got into 19 of Harding’s 30 games. He was 1-of-4 for the line, and 6-of-13 from the field. Clinton had four assists, four turnovers, seven steals and 20 re- bounds. His season high was four points. But Friday afternoon at Harding Academy, they handed out a $1,000 scholarship and a new award named after Clinton. Why? “He knew his role, played hard in practice and kept team morale high,” said Tom Murrey, a lawyer at FedEx who was a member of that 1976 team. “He went on to do great things in life and he was the best AP teammate I ever had.” John Velazquez rides Always Dreaming to victory in the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Reprinted from Horse Racing Nation Who's Hot Gunnevera -- In the time it took the son of Dialed In to go from last to first in the Fountain of Youth, it was demonstrated he possesses everything necessary to become a Kentucky Derby winner. It was the perfect progression from start one, to start two, of his 3yo season. Tapwrit -- The $1.2 million yearling purchase has found his groove at Tampa Bay Downs. His fast finish in the Sam F. Davis was validated with a big win in the Tampa Bay Derby. Improving in every start, the son of Tapit is clearly headed in the right direction. McCraken - Despite suffering a minor setback, the undefeated son of Ghostzapper appears to be right back on track. He worked four furlongs today, and looks to have plenty of time to be ready for Keeneland's Blue Grass. He was also flattered by Tapwrit's impressive win. Girvin -- The son of Tale of Ekati seemingly came from nowhere to a strong win in the Risen Star for trainer, Joe Sharp. A similar type of performance could put him in the Louisiana Derby winner's circle and on the fast track to Louisville. One Liner -- It's been a few weeks, but take your pick as far as which Pletcher (Tapwrit or One Liner) was more impressive in their coming out party. 1/ST BET // WAGER GUIDE KENTUCKY DERBY MAY01/2021 CHURCHILL DOWNS MEET THE 2021 DERBY CONTENDERS By Johnny D., @XBJohnnyD ESSENTIAL QUALITY: Unbeaten in five career starts, this son of Tapit is the defending Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and reigning 2-year-old champ. He’s also the current consensus pick as top 3-year-old. This Brad Cox-trained colt has done everything right in two 2021 starts. He romped home in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park and then out-fought a game, pace scenario- aided Highly Motivated at Keeneland to win the Grade 2 Blue Grass by a neck. He races a bit off the pace early, but can quickly reach contention when prompted. He has won by as much as four and one-quarter lengths and by as little as a neck. Last September, he broke his maiden first time out going six furlongs at Churchill Downs, so you know he likes the track. Jockey Luis Saez seeks redemption aboard this colt for the disappointment and criticism the rider endured following the disqualification of his mount Maximum Security from first to 17th in the 2019 Kentucky Derby. Trainer Brad Cox won last season’s Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer. HOT ROD CHARLIE: Ever since stretching out to two turns on the main track and adding blinkers, this son of Preakness winner Oxbow has been a tiger. His first race under those particular circumstances came in the fourth start of his career and resulted in a one-mile maiden score at Santa Anita in October.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2019 TDN Q&A: NHC WINNER SCOTT COLES BATTLE OF MIDWAY By Lucas Marquardt EUTHANIZED On Feb. 10, Scott Coles, a 34-year-old futures trader from suburban Chicago, took down the most prestigious handicapping tournament in the country, the NTRA=s 20th National Handicapping Championship in Las Vegas. It was an unlikely result. In a room full of seasoned tournament pros and lifelong handicappers--many of whom started playing well before Coles was born--it was a relative neophyte who won the NHC=s $800,000 first prize. Coles has only been handicapping seriously since American Pharoah=s Triple Crown run and has been playing tournaments for less that three years. But Coles=s victory was notable for another reason: he represents the demographic racing desperately needs to attract. That is, he=s a young, tech-savvy urban professional with some disposable income who is interested in the competitive and puzzle-solving aspects of horse playing. This Year's Kentucky Derby Is Considered Wide Open As No Horse
OVERVIEW: This year’s Kentucky Derby is considered wide open as no horse has seemed especially dominant. In the 80s and 90s, the favorite never seemed to win but that trend has been totally reversed. The post-time wagering favorite has actually won the Derby each of the last four years. Still, the payouts have been solid as the 20-horse field and the desire of bettors to chase longshots spreads the money around. The favorite this year could be 4-1 or higher as there is no clear standout. There’s a strong chance of a wet track as the weather in Louisville is lousy through the weekend and I have factored that into my analysis. I’ll assess each horse, in post-position order. THE FIELD (in post position order): #1 LOOKIN AT LEE - I really liked this horse as he had a very troubled trip last time when third in the Arkansas Derby and has been improving with each race. But it is almost impossible to win the Derby from this post position. #2 NOVEMBER SNOW - This horse made the field by winning the UAE Derby in Dubai and that route still hasn’t produced a Derby winner. But this one is by far the best horse to come via Dubai. He won a Grade 1 grass race in Europe as a two year old last year and has gotten better since being switched to the dirt. But the post position is awful and I am discounting him. #3 FAST AND ACCURATE - He may be accurate but he’s not fast.
