CMJ's New Musk Report, November 7, 1983 THE FIRST WORD When WHFS left the air a few months back it was a severe blow to creativity in radio. We are therefore very pleased to report that the entire staff has found anew home at WLOM in Annapolis, MD. They have 50,000 Watts now (WHFS had 3,000) and are applying to get their old call letters back. Direct your calls, letters and records to Bob Showacre and Dave Einstein at WLOM, Admiral Drive, Annapolis, MD 21404, 301-263-1430. Reports will begin next issue. Welcome back! And in another near miraculous recovery, the The New York Rocker will apparently return in 1984, although it is not quite clear yet in exactly what form. Congratulations to Marty Scott at JEM and his wife Toni on the birth of their son. When the new Playboy Club opens in New York at Lexington Avenue and 48th Street it will feature astate of the art video setup featuring 75 separate television screens ranging from 12 inches to 10 feet diagonal in size. The Club, designed by Adam Tihany (Club A and Xenon), will have video lighting effects by John Nadom of Light Lab (La Krypton, Paris), sound by Richard Long (Studio 54 and Paradise Garage) and video and programming by Stephen Katz and Richard Kawecki (Revolver and Midnight Sun). They plan avariety of programming including progressive, Top 40, DOR, AOR, country, soul and MOR. Submit videos and records to Time Base International, Playboy Building, 8560 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90069. Big Country is looking for an intelligent, ambitious young person in the New York area to head up their fan club in the U.S. For more info contact Linda Walker at 212-399-7045. Our congratulations to Gayle Miller of London Wavelength, who has been promoted to Vice President/Director of Music and Programming. RECORD NEWS: Based on the show we caught, Haircut 100 seems to have survived without Nick Heyward. They'll have an LP on PolyGram in December. Look for Nicky's solo debut on Arista...In an industry first, Blotto is going on tour in support of their new Sony Video 45, with Sony buying radio spots and sponsoring acontest...Look fora U2 live EP Under A Blood Red Sky. The tracks: "Eleven O'Clock Tick Tock," "I Will Follow," "Party Girl," "Gloria," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "The Electric Co.," "New Year's Day" and "40"...The title of the Yes album has been changed from 80105 to 90125 .The new Jim Caroll Band album will include a cover of "Sweet Jane." • JACKPOT! SINGLES, TRACKS, ETC. *ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN "Never Stop" (EP cut) (Sire, c/o Warner Bros., 3300 Warner Blvd., Burbank, CA 91510)—The only new (for the U.S.) studio track on the new The Echo compilation EP is one of their most exciting and danceable ever, highlighted by their characteristic vocals and style. Look for a repeat of their college and club success, with some added new music and AOR play. BOB DYLAN "Sweetheart Like You" (12") (Columbia, 51 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019)—The new (est) Dylan is here, sans evangelical overtones, and he seems much more at home without it."Sweetheart Like You" is our favorite among the advance tracks from infidels (def.: nonbelievers)—it's a trademark Dylan ballad with beautiful guitar work and heartfelt vocals, which has of course always been Dylan's strongest point. Come to think of it, Dylan has always spoken from the heart—wherever it happened to be at the moment. DURAN DURAN "Union Of The Snake" (12") (Capitol, 1750 North Vine, Hollywood, Ca 90028)—It's atribute to Duran Duran that they can even release "Union Of The Snake" as asingle—it's slower and less obvious than their last few hits. Yet after afew listens it is just as hummable, and even showcases some of the band's signature horn and guitar work. A nice record—a hit. FEARLESS FOUR "Problems Of The World" (12") (Elektra, 665 Fifth Avenue,New York, NY 10022)—A stirring rap portrait of a neighborhood's dilemma told over a simple, steady and slowly changing beat. The rap is relentless, not letting up for more than a few seconds for over six minutes, with some superb beats tacked on the end which should make for good mixing. It's nice to see the Fearless Four back on the track after the abysmal "Let's Rock."
