SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS Step I: Read Into the Wild (Skip chapters 14-15), and complete the assigned reading packet (pages 2-14 of this document) in its entirety. Read the directions carefully and respond thoroughly. This is due at the START of class on FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, and it will count as a MAJOR GRADE. Step II: Essay – Due posted to Canvas by THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, at 11:59 PM; this will count as a MAJOR GRADE. Prompt Chris McCandless is often viewed through two different viewpoints. Some believe that McCandless was a young man with noble ideas who showed courage by taking the actions necessary to fulfill his dreams. Others believe that McCandless was a narcissistic, selfish, and unprepared kid who threw his life away. Write an argumentative essay in which you present your case for one side or the other, in the end concluding with whether you see the final outcome as a tragedy or as a triumph. Essay Specifications Adhere to these guidelines for all essays in Honors 11 American Literature. Do not use outside resources to help you write your essays. These essays are not research papers. Compose each essay in 3rd person. Do not use 1st-person (I, me, my, etc.) or 2nd-person (you, us, we, etc.) pronouns. Use MLA format. ° 12-point font ° Print font – no script (Times New Roman, Georgia, Californian FB, Arial, etc.) ° Double space entire paper ° Explanations and a PDF sample paper available online – look up if you are unfamiliar with MLA format! https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/24/) Include the MLA heading with your name, the class, my name, and the date in the top left corner; include the header with your last name and page number in the top right corner. Include an interesting title, something other than the title of the book, centered and in MLA format. Compose an interesting introduction of no longer than five (5) sentences which includes the author and title of the book, a thesis statement (the message the author conveys/the argument the author makes), and strategies the author uses to convey the message/points supporting your stance on the argument the author makes. Write several specific body paragraphs, which include at least six (6) direct textual references with proper parenthetical documentation (six textual references total, not six per paragraph!). The following is an example of proper parenthetical documentation: The text begins, “It was a pleasure to burn,” alerting readers to the paradox of Montag’s love affair with fire (Bradbury 3). Paragraphs should blend details from the text/textual references with your spectacular insight and analysis. Include a topic sentence for each paragraph and proper transitions between paragraphs. Conclude with a paragraph that establishes a position on the text and provides the reader with something to consider. Do not simply restate the introduction; evaluate the message/strategies the author uses and determine your position on it. This paragraph can be no longer than five (5) sentences. Edit carefully. Part of your essay grade depends on the following: ° proper grammar and spelling ° the use of active voice (avoiding be verbs like am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been) ° variation in sentence structure ° effort and focus – Numerous mistakes reveal lack of both! Thoreau. In this thesis I study how Krakauer uses Thoreau while balancing on the fine line that differentiates the historian from the storyteller. Through an analysis of Krakauer‟s use of Thoreau‟s economic ideas, liberal ideas, and view of nature and wilderness I argue that Krakauer blurs a pragmatic understanding of Thoreau and uses techniques of fiction to characterize McCandless as a late Thoreauvian transcendentalist. By doing so, Krakauer explains and defends the protagonist‟s actions from criticism making him appear as a character whose story is exceptional. However, the characterization of the protagonist as a follower of Thoreauvian ideals by means of a partial and romantic interpretation of Thoreau is misleading and does not provide us with a better understanding of the life of McCandless. Moreover, the romantic image of Thoreau advanced by Krakauer reflects Krakauer, or at least his times; particularly, it reflects Krakauer‟s own view of wilderness and his concern for its impending demise. Consequently, I conclude that Krakauer‟s version of McCandless‟s story is perhaps too biased to amount to a strong historical narrative and be considered proper nonfiction. Nevertheless, the romanticized characterization of McCandless aids Krakauer to write a more appealing story.

Into the Wild is a nonfiction work about a young man named Chris McCandless who turned his back on his family, education, society, and all the material comforts of life to wander America as a vagabond-- working odd jobs, making friends, living life on his own terms. He eventually made his way to Alaska with the aim of living off the land but died of starvation less than four months later. Author Jon Krakauer is a journalist and the author of several well-known works of nonfiction including Into Thin Air, about an attempted ascent of Mt. Everest that ended in tragedy, and Under the Banner of Heaven, about Mormons in America. Krakauer became fascinated with Chris McCandless’s story after he wrote an article for Outside magazine about the young man’s strange life and death. The book is Krakauer’s attempt to trace McCandless’s journey across the US, to talk to the people he befriended and the family he left behind, in order to try to understand what motivated him to seek out such extreme isolation and self sufficiency. Responses to McCandless’s story (and Krakauer’s book) have been passionate and varied: some people think Chris was an admirable young man who suffered a tragic end, while others dismiss him as an arrogant, self-centered man who got what he deserved. • Active reading is a must for this class, so underline passages that seem most important to you (in other words, don’t underline everything!) and add notes in the margins about significant developments in character, conflict, and theme (The Big Three).

Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment by Martin E. P. Seligman I’ve been a big fan of Dr. Seligman’s work since studying him in my Political Psychology course in college. This work details how to find your “significant strengths” in life and use them to live a meaningful life. Bokotola by Millard Fuller Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity International alongside his wife Linda, details their work in Africa building housing before Habitat even began. A very interesting read about the roots of our beloved organization. Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah This book pleasantly surprised me. I expected to be reading a tell-all of how Trevor Noah became the star and host of the Daily Show on Comedy Central, but instead it’s a moving portrait of growing up in South Africa during Apartheid with an abusive father.

While we’re asking you to read these books over the summer, they’re really our first major texts for the year, and we will discuss the books extensively as well as write about them. In Tattoos on the Heart, he relays his experience working in the ghetto in a series of parables inspired by love and faith. Equal parts adventure tale, coming-of-age narrative, social critique, and mystery, Into the Wild tells the true story of a young man named Chris McCandless who grew up in our nation’s capital, came from an attentive, upper income family, received an excellent college education, and was described by many as motivated and personable. Despite, or perhaps because of, these advantages, Chris struggled to identify himself as an individual and to reconcile his social responsibilities with his personal goals and values.
