Make no mistake, jyotisha* (loosely translated as ”Indian astrology‘; a more accurate translation would be ”Indian divination‘) is real and it can be one of the most amazing things you will ever encounter in your life (for example, just ask anyone who has ever had an experience with a true naadi-jyotishi (a particular type of jyotisha). But it is also true that finding a properly trained jyotishi (a practitioner of jyotisha) is usually not a simple matter of searching in your local telephone book. W hy do we seek out jyotishis? The answer is simple: life can be difficult, and often we feel lost, helpless, and even hopeless. A jyotishi represents an ability to tap into a higher source of wisdom to guide our lives. W hy then does astrology have a sometimes unsavoury reputation, and why then do some astrologers so frequently get it wrong? Because the subject of jyotisha is so vast and complex, and because it touches on our most intimate natures, it is easy for unscrupulous or deluded people to take advantage of others. Everybody wants to know about their money, career, family, relationships, children, health, etc. If someone claims to be able to shed light on these things, we sometimes trust them too easily œ or we dismiss them out of hand as complete charlatans. Neither approach is helpful. The truth is that there are people of astonishing predictive ability, but it is also true that they are few and far between. -

I had only recently begun studying Vedic astrology (a system for predicting the future developed by the yoga masters of India) and I still wasn't sure how seriously to take it. Given how scary Johnathan's upcoming planetary cycle looked. I certainly hoped there was nothing to it! The thing that made me most uncomfortable, though, was that during the same time Johnathan's horoscope showed him undergoing a major disease or accident, my horoscope showed me undergoing an emotional trauma on account of my husband. I marked on my calendar the day this ordeal was supposed to begin, but didn't say anything to Johnathan. I felt pretty foolish worrying about a hypothetical event suggested in a horoscope. Still, when Johnathan arrived home safely on the fateful day I was secretly relieved. Then he sat me down at the kitchen table and told me he'd had a call from his doctor earlier that afternoon. The routine test he'd had a few days earlier had revealed a malignant tumor. Johnathan had cancer. No matter how long you've been practicing yoga unless you're completely enlightened, dealing with a life threatening illness is incredibly difficult. But all though Johnathan's treatment and recovery I kept coming back to the fact that it had shown up in both of our Vedic charts, so accurately that you could predict the day it would be diagnosed. -

A SYNOPSIS ON THE PHILOSOPHICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF LAW OF KARMA IN INDIAN PHILOSOPHY ROJALIN SWAIN REGISTRATION NO. : VB-989 OF 2014-15 SUPERVISOR NAME : DR. REKHA OJHA INTRODUCTION Man is considered to be the highest creature in the universe. We are born with some destiny and to fulfill this destiny we have to perform some kinds of action. Karma is an activity, which all the human beings have to perform, until death releases them from the body prison. Karma is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘kri’ which means action. Karma may mean conscious action; sacrifice; duty; self- surrender etc. nobody can remain exist without performing any kind of action. The doctrine of karma implies that one person’s karma cannot have an effect on another person’s future. Good karmas lead to good consequences and bad karmas lead to bad consequences. Karma has three distinguishable components, namely, the agent, the action, and the object. Karma is the most famous concept in Indian philosophy. There are different views of doctrine of karma in Indian philosophy like the views of Jainism, Buddhism, Nyᾱya-Vaishesika, Mimᾱṃsᾱ and Advaita Vedᾱnta. The doctrine of karma occupies a more significant position in Jaina philosophy. In Jainism, karma is known as material in nature. It is of the nature of the subtle matter which penetrated into the soul and binds them to the saṃsᾱra. Karmic matter unites with the soul just like water unites with milk. Passions are responsible for the entrance of karmic matter (ᾱsrava) into the soul. Jainism talks of four passions like, anger (krodha), greed (lobha), pride (mᾱna) and delusion (mᾱya), which are called sticky substances. -

They achieved this in form of sanjeevan samadhi, social service, spreading awareness worship, etc. Today we are in need of such great thinkers, philosophers and their teachings too. The power of such thoughts is easily accessible to us in form of books, case studies, spir- itual discourses and also, akashic records. The current plight of our society reflects social evils such as inequality, injustice, atrocities on weaker section and greed of power. Healing techniques and energy transformation methods if practiced in masses, can prove beneficial to ignite the power of inner soul. In this disturbed physical world, let us take time to look inside where we can find a true friend who can advice us with wisdom. Das Post Doctoral Fellow(USA), Associate Professor, Department of English, Nehru Arts, Science, Commerce College & PG Center , Hubli, Karanataka. ABSTRACT: Most of Indian English literature quotes that the destination of each ones destiny is influenced by two important factors namely „Karma‟ and „Dharma‟. Karma is nothing but the action of life and the lessons we have to learn from it to correct our destiny, whereas Dharma means to live our life according to our duty to be done in this birth. Many of the Indian English novels project this basic principle of the theory of Karma that one‟s past Karma influences the present. This has been realized by the protagonists as they progress/digress in their lives. Many novels also reflect the „Law of Identical Harvest‟, which says that effects produced by our thoughts are more identical in nature to thought itself, like a corn reproduces only corn and a mango can reproduce only a mango. The events or happenings in the novels, to the protagonists, though not visible but are acted upon by a supreme force. The various protagonists realize the impact of such a force and are much wiser, and change course and try to move in the right direction- a trial and error exercise to finally meet their pre destined end. Karma yoga is revealed to have an eternal relevance, one that benefits from intimate knowledge of the Bhagavad Gita. The doctrine of Niskama Karma and the doctrine of liberation in Indian thought is a very primordial and extensively discussed theme. It is generally said that we define any performance which done by us can be treated by us as action or Karma. All actions may cause bondage. A social message of Karma yoga plays an important role in bringing about for changing in the society through selfless action. The message of the Bhagavad Gita may be transferred into set of practical, ethical guideline and its insistence that involvement with world is an ethically correct function of human behaviour. Some great thinkers have greatly influenced by the ideal of Karma yoga. The world is full of violence. To establish peace in the World; man should follow the Niskama Karma yoga of Gita. Keywords: Karma, Niskama Karma, Guna, Chaturvarna, Liberation. The word “Karma” comes from the Sanskrit word “kri” which means doing, affairs or activities and that same ordinary meaning is intended in the Bhagavad Gita. Karma as used in the exposition made in the Bhagavad Gita must not be taken in the restrictive meaning of action prescribed by the Srutis or the Smritis, but in a more comprehensive meaning. -

The present unit on the philosophy of Hinduism initiates the students to the precious nature of this treasure, and motivates them to unearth the hidden riches of the religious, spiritual, and philosophical heritage of Hinduism. 2.1 INTRODUCTION India is the birth place of many religions and religious sects. The word ‘Hindu’ is not of Hindu origin. It is not found in any standard Sanskrit dictionary. The Persians used to refer to the people who lived on the other side of the Indus (Sindu) river, as Hindu. Hinduism is more of an umbrella, sheltering many different religious traditions which originated in very ancient times and in various parts of the subcontinent. Some Hindu thinkers suggest that the Vedas provide the bond that holds the Hindus together. 2.2 SOURCES OF HINDU PHILOSOPHY Scriptures are the codified expressions of religious, mystical experiences of great souls. -
