Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium. -

Continuity and Development in Roman Catholic Ecclesiology* Susan K. Wood Department of Theology, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI Abstract An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ develops the spiritual and Christological dimension of the church as society. The church as sacrament offers a way of differentiating between Christ and the church while at the same time retaining the close correlation between the two. The church as people of God introduces historical consciousness into the definition of the church. The church as communion synthesizes the strong sacramental and spiritual identity of the church with its organizational structure. -

Subscribe to our Compelling Mail Newsletter: Email Address Submit Systematic theology is the field of study that correlates the data of the Bible as a whole in order to organize the total of God's special revelation. In other words, systematic theology is a way of categorizing what the Bible teaches regarding key areas of the Christian faith. Traditionally, theologians concentrate on a list of specific categories within the field of systematic theology. Some of these categories include the following: • Prolegomena, a technical term meaning "the beginning of the discussion," is often found in theology books to discuss introductory issues and definitions. • Theology Proper (also called Paterology) is the study of what the Bible teaches about God the Father. • Christology is the study of God the Son. • Pneumatology is the study of God the Holy Spirit. • Bibliology is the study of the Bible (also called special revelation). • Soteriology is the study of salvation. • Ecclesiology is the study of the church. • Angelology is the study of angels (including fallen angels or demons and Satan, sometimes under the headings of Demonology and Satanology). • Anthropology is the study of humanity (different from the field of anthropology since Christian anthropology focuses on the spiritual aspects of humanity). • Harmartiology is the study of sin. • Eschatology is the study of "last things," including biblical prophecy, the end times, and the afterlife. In addition to systematic theology, there are many other ways in which theology can be studied. -

IS THERE A CATHOLIC ECCLESIOLOGY? The remark is nearly commonplace that ecclesiology as a distinct theological tractate or discipline developed relatively late, toward the end of the Middle Ages. Of course there had been a great deal of reflection on the Church long before that period. St. Paul's Letter to the Colossians would not make sense if Paul had no ecclesiology. St. Augustine's De Gvitate Dei showed a profound concern about the Church and its relation to the Empire and the world. All patristic liturgies express the sense of responsibility felt by the Christians toward the community of the faithful, both in its local embodiment and in its universal dimension. The Church of the Fathers was not a nude fact, as though the Fathers lived the faith in the community without realizing the meaning of the community in the faith. Louis Bouyer is undoubted- ly right in his book, L'Eglise de Dieu,1 to present the Church of the Fathers in strict continuity with that of the New Testament. Yet whatever major elements for a developed ecclesiology one finds among the Fathers, it remains that until the eve of the Reforma- tion the Church was never looked at in directo, but was always seen in obliquo. In a more modern language, the Church was connoted but not denoted by the kerygma, by its formulation in the regula fidei, by the normative decisions of the great councils, and by the expository and systematic reflections on the Christian experience which abounded in patristic and medieval literature. The first tractates De ecclesia grew out of the conflicts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. -
6. 'Calvinism' and 'Arminianism'
6. ‘Calvinism’ and ‘Arminianism’ In this section of our report we turn, as we have been asked to do, to an area of doctrine that, in the past, has been contested within the traditions of our churches, but that also has significant implications for mission and evangelisation today. The issues are far from dead: for example they are sometimes aggressively promoted in university and college Christian Unions. We believe that the challenge of the mission of the Church today is the proper context within which the tension expressed in the historic terms ‘Calvinism’ and ‘Arminianism’ should be considered. The terms ‘Calvinist’ and ‘Calvinism’ usually refer to a specific aspect of the theology of salvation (soteriology) that arose from the teaching of the French Reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) in Geneva. Drawing extensively on the theology of St Augustine of Hippo, and deploying a wide range of biblical material, Calvin applied the doctrine of the sovereignty of God with some logical rigour to the work of grace in the individual.1 His teaching on unconditional election, with its corollary of double predestination (predestination to salvation or damnation) was further developed by later Reformed theologians and was articulated by the Synod of Dort in 1618-19. To reject that particular tenet is not to disown the Reformed tradition as a whole or to disparage Calvin’s massive contribution to the Christian theological tradition, particularly through his Institutes of the Christian Religion and his many commentaries on the books of the Bible. The whole question was been recast by Karl Barth in the mid-twentieth century, who placed the decrees of God and the destiny of the whole human race within Christology: Jesus Christ is both the Elect of God and the one rejected by God. -

WHAT IS THE CHURCH? TOWARD A WESLEYAN ECCLESIOLOGY Deirdre Brower Latz Nazarene Theological College, Manchester At the very beginning of discussions centred on the ideas of ‘One Lord, One faith, One Baptism: Unity and Diversity in our Wesleyan Theological Tradition’ it seems appropriate to grapple with the question: ‘What is the Church?’ and to attempt to move towards an understanding of ecclesiology that can truly claim to be Wesleyan. Only on the basis of such an ecclesiological analysis can the International Church of the Nazarene intentionally develop and shape her ministry, pedagogy, and missiology in a way that is true to her roots, that makes best use and sense of her historical resources, and thus provide the best hope for the future. Such an analysis however, must be careful to make several distinctions. First, the question of any ecclesiology is too broad to be fully or easily determined, and the “nature, form and function of the Christian Church” (Snyder, 1996, 67) are all encompassed within any true understanding of ecclesiology. Second, Wesley is slippery(!), and the various Wesleyan ecclesiological trajectories, though related through the Wesley gene-pool, are not necessarily all co-equal inheritors of Wesley’s fullest understanding of the Church. It is the understanding of this paper that in this setting, our shared assumptions are at least as follows: a) we are inheritors of Wesleyan theology, b) being Wesleyan is positive, c) we have different understandings of church, Wesley, and Wesleyanism which are culturally and educationally formed, d) we share a vocabulary which will enable us to be in genuine conversation despite our differences.
