    religions Article Ecumenical Ecclesiology in its New Contexts: Considering the Transformed Relationship between Roman Catholic Ecclesiology and Ecumenism Kristin Colberg Department of Theology, College of Saint Benedict, St. John’s School of Theology & Seminary, Collegeville, MN 56321-2000, USA; [email protected] Received: 20 August 2018; Accepted: 25 September 2018; Published: 26 September 2018 Abstract: The quest for Christian unity is entering a new phase amidst the movement’s many voices, perspectives and tensions. Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium.

Continuity and Development in Roman Catholic Ecclesiology* Susan K. Wood Department of Theology, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI Abstract An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ develops the spiritual and Christological dimension of the church as society. The church as sacrament offers a way of differentiating between Christ and the church while at the same time retaining the close correlation between the two. The church as people of God introduces historical consciousness into the definition of the church. The church as communion synthesizes the strong sacramental and spiritual identity of the church with its organizational structure.

    'TRINITARIAN' PNEUMATOLOGY IN THE NEW TESTAMENT?-ToWARDS AN EXPLANATION OF THE WORSHIP OF JESUS ... MAx TURNER. Members of the British New Testarnent Society have spent considerable time and energy on the important questions of when, how and why Jesus came to be worshipped as God.' Very much less time has been spent on the status of the Spirit, and a trawl through the massive secondary literature of our discipline catches rela­ tively few relevant fish. There are I think at least two obvious explanations for this. One is what Professor Hurtado has called 'the binitarian shape of early Christian worship' - that is, it appears that in the apostolic church cultic veneration was offered to the Father and to the Son, but not apparently to the Spirit.2 We have to wait for the 2nd Century Martyrdom and Ascension of Isaiah (9.33-36) before we encounter worship addressed to the Spirit. Second, debates about the personhood of the Spirit are understood to be secondary to and even largely parasitic on the Christo logical debates. One first settles the question of the divinity of Jesus, this establishes the all­ important principle of plurality within the unity of God; then one can set about the relatively minor mopping up operation with respect to the Spirit. Arthur Wainwright comments: The Spirit seems to have been included in the doctrine of God almost as an afterthought about which men had no strong feelings, either favourable or hostile'.] Wainwright was speaking, of course, about Patristic developments, but one could apply it (mutatis mutandis) to NT scholarship.

In this dissertation I examine the pneumatology of Ephrem the Syrian, who is often over-looked in discussions about fourth century pneumatology. I argue that Ephrem displays a high pneumatology that fits within the broad contours of the pro-Nicene movement. I begin with a discussion of Ephrem’s Syriac heritage and focus on the themes and language surrounding the Holy Spirit in pre-Nicene Syriac texts. Pre-Nicene Syriac authors speak about the Spirit’s role in liturgical practices, often using feminine or maternal language to describe the Spirit’s work.

In contrast to early-20th-century Roman Catholic theology that divorced reflection on the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the human person from a systematic ecclesiology, Congar developed a theology of personal indwelling that was in- separable from a theology of the Church. The author then illustrates the fruitfulness of Congar’s approach by using his theology con- structively to address the postconciliar discussion as to whether the Catholic Church is a hierarchy or a democracy.] RENCH DOMINICAN YVES CONGAR (1904–1995) expressed a desire to be F an Aeolian harp upon which the Spirit of God would blow, releasing harmonious melodies.1 His life of dedicated prayer, service, and scholar- ship were all signs of his fidelity to this calling. Indeed, Congar was not only an instrument of the Spirit of God, but also a theologian of the Spirit. The following pages contain a condensed summary of a series of Lectures delivered during the past seventeen years to the students of this Institution, in this department of Christian Doctrine. In the effort to prepare a succinct treatise, available for practical uses, rather than an elaborate dissertation, it has been deemed desirable to omit all extended discussion of controverted points, and simply to incor porate, with the briefest statement of grounds and reasons, such con clusions as have justified themselves to the author after careful inves tigation. Minor divisions and notations, employed in the class-room, have for the most part been omitted ; only such authorities as are easily accessible, are mentioned by way of reference. Prepared originally for the benefit of theological students, this brief volume — the fruit of many happy studies in this interesting field — is now, with some hesitation, sent forth from its seclusion here, in the hope that it may prove useful in wider circles. The fact that there is in present circulation, hardly any work of the same class, and cov ering the same ground, seems in part at least to justify such hope.
