Christians are witnessing the advent of an emerging ecumenical paradigm, which, because it is not fully realized, is still realizing its full definition. The paradigm operates in a global context rather than a Eurocentric one, and even as it is more global, it is simultaneously more local. It cultivates shared praxis while being less concerned with the comparison of dogmas. Ecclesiology is also entering a new paradigm which shares many features with its ecumenical counterpart, particularly its global perspective and interest in shared praxis ahead of dogmatic questions. Even though ecumenism and ecclesiology share common trajectories, their journeys are unfolding in largely parallel rather than cooperative and mutually-enriching ways. This raises the question: What opportunities might arise from examining the shifts in ecumenism and ecclesiology together? This article examines how new methodological and practical developments in these two fields can form and inform one another. It studies the shift to synodality in the Catholic Church and the turn towards discernment in the ecumenical sphere as manifestations of similar theological commitments and a common interest in cultivating participatory processes. The seismic changes reshaping the religious landscape are transforming the relationship between ecumenism and ecclesiology; yet a strong connection between them endures and illumines paths forward for the church in the third millennium. -

His writings on the Church are very numerous and highly varied. His scholarly work, spanning half a century, tackled all significant topics of Catholic ecclesiology, from essenti- al ecclesiology (essentielle Ekklesiolo- gie) to the existential one (existenti- elle Ekklesiologie). Theological Studies 55 (1994) JESUS AND SALVATION: AN ESSAY IN INTERPRETATION ROGER HAIGHT, S.J. Weston School of Theology HE CONCEPT of salvation is central to Christianity. From a historical T perspective, the experience of Jesus as savior is the basis from which the Christian movement sprang. This religion arose and contin ues to exist because people experience Jesus as a bringer of God's salvation. Christology in its narrow sense of defining the status of Jesus before God and human beings depends upon soteriology. Yet despite this centrality and importance, the Church has never formu lated a conciliar definition of salvation nor provided a universally ac cepted conception. This is not necessarily something negative, but it still leaves us with a pluralism in the domain of the theology of sal vation, the meaning of which remains open and fluid. Salvation is also elusive: like time, every Christian knows its meaning until asked to explain it. Because of its centrality, the problems that surround the concept of salvation are rendered more grave. Many of the traditional expres sions of how Jesus saves are expressed in myths that no longer com municate to educated Christians; some are even offensive. Some of the traditional theological "explanations" of salvation through Christ do no better. Continuity and Development in Roman Catholic Ecclesiology* Susan K. Wood Department of Theology, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI Abstract An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ develops the spiritual and Christological dimension of the church as society. The church as sacrament offers a way of differentiating between Christ and the church while at the same time retaining the close correlation between the two. The church as people of God introduces historical consciousness into the definition of the church. The church as communion synthesizes the strong sacramental and spiritual identity of the church with its organizational structure. -

132 TORCH TRINITY JOURNAL 6 (2003) ECCLESIOLOGICAL CHRISTOLOGY IN THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION Chul Hae Kim* INTRODUCTION Among the twenty-seven New Testament books, the Book of Revelation has been the most neglected book. Many people consider it taboo to interpret or read it.1 This is because this book contains many symbols , visions and other characteristics, as do most apocalyptic writings. On the other hand, this book is so significant that every believer should read, hear, and practice it to enjoy the ultimate blessing promised by God. 2 However, as the history of New Testament interpretation shows, many believers brought negative results and fell into the trap of destruction instead of enjoying the promised blessing in the book of Revelation. They failed because of their ignorance and instability, which distorted the Word of God, as the Apostle Peter warned in his second letter (3:15-16).3 It is the same that even today, immature and hasty interpretation of this book may cause a serious disaster which is often overlooked. The correct interpretation is possible only when one understands the literary genre of the book and basic interpretation skills for the genre. As G. K. Beale points out in his NIGTC commentary on the book of Revelation, “John utilized the three genres of apocalyptic, *Rev. 1 Holy Trinity Catholic Church March 24, 2019 Christology—First Presentation Three Points: The distinction among three Jesuses: (1) the Jesus “who lived back then,” (2) the Jesus of the historians (the “historical Jesus”), and (3) the Jesus Christ of Christian faith The humanity and divinity of Jesus What Jesus’ ministry was all about I. The Distinction Among the Three Jesues Jesus “who lived back then”: we don’t have immediate contact with this figure; we would have had to be his contemporaries, living near him. The historical Jesus; the knowledge gleaned by historians about the past Jesus using criteria such as embarrassment, dissimilarity, multiple attestation, coherence, and rejection and execution. The Jesus Christ of Christian faith: the Jesus Christ encountered in faith in the Church’s liturgy, in Scripture, in the Church’s witness, in personal prayer and in words and deeds of Christian discipleship. The Jesus Christ available for encounter in the here and now. (When I am praying with NT texts about him in his ministry, I am always engaging with the present risen one in real time.) We can’t assume that a text about Jesus in his ministry Is bare information about Jesus as he lived and act in the past. The memories have passed through filters and have been applied to situations in the early Church. For example: two texts about Jesus speaking about divorce 2 Matt 19:3-12 and Mark 10:2-12 (woman divorcing her husband—Hellenistic world in Mark) Jesus in Matthew says: “Go. therefore, making disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the holy Spirit.” Miracles (deeds of power; signs): we cannot determine historically what event or events in Jesus’ earthly life lie at the origin of these narratives as we find them in the Gospels II. -

The following pages contain a condensed summary of a series of Lectures delivered during the past seventeen years to the students of this Institution, in this department of Christian Doctrine. In the effort to prepare a succinct treatise, available for practical uses, rather than an elaborate dissertation, it has been deemed desirable to omit all extended discussion of controverted points, and simply to incor porate, with the briefest statement of grounds and reasons, such con clusions as have justified themselves to the author after careful inves tigation. Minor divisions and notations, employed in the class-room, have for the most part been omitted ; only such authorities as are easily accessible, are mentioned by way of reference. Prepared originally for the benefit of theological students, this brief volume — the fruit of many happy studies in this interesting field — is now, with some hesitation, sent forth from its seclusion here, in the hope that it may prove useful in wider circles. The fact that there is in present circulation, hardly any work of the same class, and cov ering the same ground, seems in part at least to justify such hope.
