Honks, Whistles, and Harp: The Transnational Sound of Harpo Marx 1 Honks, Whistles, and Harp: The Transnational Sound of Harpo Marx Marie Ventura Introduction: a Transnational Trickster 1 In early autumn, 1933, New York critic Alexander Woollcott telephoned his friend Harpo Marx with a singular proposal. Having just learned that President Franklin Roosevelt was about to carry out his campaign promise to have the United States recognize the Soviet Union, Woollcott—a great friend and supporter of the Roosevelts, and Eleanor Roosevelt in particular—had decided “that Harpo Marx should be the first American artist to perform in Moscow after the US and the USSR become friendly nations” (Marx and Barber 297). “They’ll adore you,” Woollcott told him. “With a name like yours, how can you miss? Can’t you see the three-sheets? ‘Presenting Marx—In person’!” (Marx and Barber 297) 2 Harpo’s response, quite naturally, was a rather vehement: you’re crazy! The forty-four- year-old performer had no intention of going to Russia.1 In 1933, he was working in Hollywood as one of a family comedy team of four Marx Brothers: Chico, Harpo, Groucho, and Zeppo. -

Virgin Islander Nkosi Thomas, a Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander, Receives Prestigious Legion of Merit Award Pdf Published On June 14, 2021 05:19 AM Staff Consortium | June 14, 2021 05:19:44 AM 8 Nkosi Thomas, his wife Dr. Jennifer Thomas and their two children Enam, left, and Nzuri. U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Nkosi Thomas, a native of St. Thomas, was awarded the Legion of Merit medal from the secretary of the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS), Alejandro Nicholas Mayorkas on May 10, a release issued Sunday has made known. Mayorkas presented the award during a ceremony at DHS Headquarters in Washington, DC. The Legion of Merit is a military award of the United States Armed Forces that is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements. With this award, Thomas was recognized for his outstanding meritorious service in the performance of his duties as the military assistant to the secretary of Homeland Security, from May 2019 to June 2021. Thomas exhibited extraordinary organizational acumen and keen judgment in a position of tremendous responsibility with direct impact across all Department of Homeland Security equities, stated the release. His flawless communications, financial accounting, and operational support of the Secretary ensured the seamless continuity of government while enabling the Secretary to lead the effective execution of the Department's vital missions throughout the most dynamic period in its history, the release further stated. During the most active hurricane season on record, an unprecedented global Covid-19 pandemic, numerous cyber-attacks, and a surge in irregular migration along the southwest border, Lieutenant Commander Thomas is said to have skillfully coordinated the Secretary's strategic engagements with the president and vice president of the United States, the Cabinet, Congressional members, and foreign dignitaries, allowing the Secretary to execute the priorities of the Department to protect the Homeland and serve the American people. -

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Three historians helped to make this study possible. Timothy Gilfoyle supervised my work with great skill. He gave me breathing room to research, write, and rewrite. When he finally received a completed draft, he turned that writing around with the speed and thoroughness of a seasoned editor. Tim’s own hunger for scholarship also served as a model for how a historian should act. I’ll always cherish the conversations we shared over Metropolis coffee— topics that ranged far and wide across historical subjects and contemporary happenings. -
