Executive summary The outstanding marine biodiversity of the Comoros islands is both poorly studied and subject to high local pressures on resources, especially on the island of Anjouan. In partnership with Comorian NGO Dahari, Blue Ventures aims to address the pressures on the marine ecosystems of the Sima peninsula in western Anjouan (Figure 1), whilst meeting the needs of fishery-dependent communities and conserving the marine resources and biodiversity. To achieve this goal, we need to identify and implement community-centred opportunities for enhancing conservation, fisheries management and livelihoods. However, there are little existing data available on the local ecosystems, socio-economic context or fisheries to inform these activities, so it was necessary to carry out broad-scale baseline research. Our programme of participatory research began in 2015, and we present the initial results in the report as follows: ● Broad overview of coastal ecosystems across the region of our interventions (coastal ecosystem mapping, 3.2.1) ● Broad overview of evidence of anthropogenic pressures (3.2.2) ● Detailed evaluation of coral reef status at several sites in the region (3.2.3) ● Broad overview of the socio-economic context across the region of our interventions (4.3.1) ● Detailed socio-economic assessment of the communities involved in our interventions (4.3.2, 4.3.3, 4.3.4, 4.3.5) ● Results of ongoing catch monitoring carried out at two of the sites involved in our interventions (5) Key findings: ● There is vast coral reef coverage around the Sima peninsula, though live hard coral cover and fish abundance and richness varies widely. ● Mangroves are present in few locales, but cover appears to be stable. ● There are significant areas of seagrass bed

Blue Ventures has been providing Dahari with technical support and training in ecological monitoring, project management and community-based participatory approaches to marine conservation via the Project Manager. • Moheli Marine Park (MMP) (Comorian institution and national park): Blue Ventures and MMP have exchanged experiences and shared learning around community-based fisheries management, especially around octopus closures.     Annotated Checklist ofthe Fishes ofWake Atoll 1 Phillip S. Lobel2 and Lisa Kerr Lobel 3 Abstract: This study documents a total of 321 fishes in 64 families occurring at Wake Atoll, a coral atoll located at 19 0 17' N, 1660 36' E. Ten fishes are listed by genus only and one by family; some of these represent undescribed species. The first published account of the fishes of Wake by Fowler and Ball in 192 5 listed 107 species in 31 families. This paper updates 54 synonyms and corrects 20 misidentifications listed in the earlier account. The most recent published account by Myers in 1999 listed 122 fishes in 33 families. Our field surveys add 143 additional species records and 22 new family records for the atoll. Zoogeo­ graphic analysis indicates that the greatest species overlap of Wake Atoll fishes occurs with the Mariana Islands. Several fish species common at Wake Atoll are on the IUCN Red List or are otherwise of concern for conservation. Fish pop­ ulations at Wake Atoll are protected by virtue of it being a U.S. military base and off limits to commercial fishing. Le projet AEP Sima et ses difficultés Dans le cadre du projet « Eco-gestes et éco-savoirs dans l’Océan Indien » financé par la Région Réunion et que nous dirigeons, nous avons eu le plaisir d’effectuer deux missions sur l’île d’Anjouan (Union des Comores), la première en juillet 2013 et la seconde en septembre 2013 pour un total de près d’un mois. Notre activité présentait un volet recherche et un volet enseignement. L’ensemble s’intitulait Pérennité de la gestion de l’eau par les usagers. Péninsule de Sima (six villages) sur l'île d'Anjouan (Union des Comores) / Projet d'Acheminement en Eau Potable. Nous assurâmes quatre-vingts heures d’enseignement à Mutsamudu ; il s’agissait de former les cinq animateurs du Projet d'Acheminement en Eau Potable à Sima via des cours de communication, de gestion et résolution de conflits, d’argumentation, des jeux de rôles et des mises en situation. Sur le plan de la recherche, nous fîmes soutenir quatre mémoires1 (l’un des animateurs n’ayant pas pu mener à son terme son travail). Grâce à ces mémoires, nos journées sur le terrain ont été grandement facilitées. Le 1 Mohamed Maenrouf Issiaka a soutenu avec succès en septembre 2013 un mémoire intitulé : Les risques liés au maintien d’un réseau parallèle dans le village de Bimbini.

Ratter, Jan Petzold and Kamardine Sinane Abstract The current discussion of anticipated climate change impacts and future sea level rise is particularly relevant to small island states. An increase in natural hazards, such as floods and storm waves, is likely to have a devastating impact on small islands’ coastlines, severely affecting targeted sustainable development. Coastal erosion, notably human- induced erosion, has been an ongoing threat to small island biodiversity, resources, infrastructure, and settlements, as well as society at large. In the context of climate change, the problem of coastal erosion and the debate surrounding it is gaining momentum. Before attributing associated impacts to climate change, current human activities need to be analysed, focusing not only on geomorphological and climatological aspects, but also on political and traditional cul- tural frameworks. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the importance of the social-political-ecological systems analysis for adaptation strategies, and thus for future sustainable development. Coastal use is based on human con- structs of the coast, as well as local perceptions and values ascribed to the coast. We use the case study of Anjouan, Comoros to differentiate between constructive and destructive practices on the coast, from both a mental and technical perspective. Beach erosion is described as more than a resource problem that manifests itself locally rather than nationally.
