EditorialArticles Page 4 Journalism Education Volume 8 number 1 Contributors Felicity Biggins Felicity Biggins is a lecturer in communication in the School of Creative Industries at the University of Newcastle in NSW, Australia, where she has been teaching journalism and radio for ten years after 30 years as a journalist in both print and broadcast. She is in her final doctorate year at Deakin University, where she is researching how readers respond to works of literary journalism and what impact that has on the genre’s claims to truth telling. Her other research interests are journalism education and the future of journalism. Her research has been presented at conferences in Australia and New Zealand. Lily Canter Lily Canter is a senior lecturer in journalism at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. She teaches on a range of practical and academic modules including digital journalism, podcasting, research methods and journal- ism issues. Her research interests include local and hyperlocal media, digital journalism, social media and journalism training. She also works as a freelance money, health and lifestyle journalist writing for a diverse range of publications including the South China Morning Post, The Guardian, The Sun, Moneywise and Vegan Living. Myra Evans Myra Evans is a senior lecturer of journalism at the University of West England, UK and is the faculty aca- demic director for inclusive and practice-oriented curriculum for ACE. She is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy teaching advanced broadcast journalism and is a tutor on the university’s Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Professional Practice. She has more than 20 years experience in journalism and before joining UWE she worked as a video journalist for ITV West. She also worked on local newspapers and as a communications officer for the University of Bath. Karen Fowler-Watt Karen Fowler-Watt is research theme lead for journalism education in the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice at Bournmouth University, UK. As a BBC journalist, she worked in the Middle East, Northern Ire- land, and the United States. Her research focuses on questions of empathy and voice with specific interest in journalism education, trauma awareness, and conflict reporting. She works with the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change. Her new book (co-edited with Stephen Jukes), New Journalisms: Rethinking practice, theory and pedagogy was published by Routledge in August 2019. Janet Fulton Janet Fulton is a Senior Lecturer in Communication and Media at the University of Newcastle in Australia and teaches and researches in the area of journalism, journalism education, the future of journalism, social media, work-integrated-learning, and creativity and cultural production. Janet’s research in these areas has been published in books and journals and presented at national and international conferences. Janet’s latest book is Educating for Creativity within Higher Education: Integration of Research into Media Practice, published in 2018 by Palgrave MacMillan UK. Maria Dot Grau Maria Dot Grau originates from Spain but came to the UK to complete a BA (Hons) Journalism at Sheffield Hallam University, UK. Her interest in sport led her to write a dissertation on the representation of football players in the British media. Following graduation she now works as an editorial assistant for DAZN, a global sports streaming company. Lee Hall Lee Hall leads the School of Media and Communications at Sunderland University, UK. He manages subject areas across media, journalism, performance and social media management supporting the staff in deliver- ing excellent learning experiences, world-leading research and in growing outstanding links to industry. Margaret Hughes Margaret Hughes is senior lecturer in journalism at the University of the West of Scotland, where she led the development of its first degree in journalism 15 years ago. Her doctoral thesis explored the development of journalism education within the academy and this continues to inform her current research activity. EditorialArticles Volume 8 number 1 Journalism Education page 5 Maarit Jaakkola Maarit Jaakkola, PhD, associate professor, is a lecturer in journalism at the Faculty of Information Technol- ogy and Communication Sciences (ITC) at Tampere University in Finland, as well as a researcher and the assistant director at the Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research NORDICOM at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Currently, she is also the chair of the Nordic Collaboration Committee for Journalism Education and the coordinator of journalistic internships at Tampere University. Jaakkola’s research interests are focused on the ‘signature pedagogies’ of journalism, journalistic profes- sionalism, specialised journalism and aspects of cultural intermediation. Christina Koutsoukos Christina Koutsoukos lectures in Journalism in the School of Creative Industries at the University of New- castle, Australia. Her teaching expertise is backed by more than two decades experience in broadcast jour- nalism. Her research interests include: journalism education with an emphasis on skills for best practice journalism; specialised reporting expressly religion and its impact on society; and maintaining interest and funding in investigative journalism at a time of financial and moral challenge for the journalism sector.   • Spontaneous Generation of Life Is the Inevitable Outcome of Time, Chance, and the Right Chemical Conditions
    “The origin of life appears almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have had to be satisfied to get it going.” –Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the DNA double helix structure1 Introduction According to evolutionary theory, all life – bacteria, plants, and people – evolved from a hypothetical first cell, which allegedly arose spontaneously from chemical substrates. This is said to have happened over 3 billion years ago. That hypothetical first cell has been called LUCA (last universal common ancestor). This first cell is assumed to be at the very base of Darwin’s hypothetical “tree of life”. It is almost universally claimed that life came from non-life (abiogenesis). Is this good science? It is almost universally claimed that spontaneous generation of life is the inevitable outcome of time, chance, and the right chemical conditions. Is this claim even remotely credible? School curricula, textbooks, educational science programs, and countless museums consistently insist there is a strong scientific case for the spontaneous origin of life. From a naturalistic evolutionary perspective, it should not be surprising that spontaneous generation is assumed to be feasible, as it is essential to the evolutionary story. We can’t have Darwin’s “tree of life” without the trunk, which emerged from the primordial seed of that first cell. We are continuously told stories that sound like plausible scenarios for how simple inorganic molecules might have come together to give rise to the first living cell. However, upon careful examination, we find that the stories being told are not only extremely speculative – they are rationally indefensible.

With the closure of the Centre, the tasks of researching and analysing higher education will henceforth lie with others. In the following pages, we look at some of the changes facing higher education and at the challenges they pose, both to those who work in higher education and to those who use it. The papers draw broadly on research projects and experience from within CHERI and beyond. As well as the papers prepared by CHERI researchers - John Brennan, Brenda Little, Mala Singh and Ruth Williams - the report contains papers from two of CHERI’s visiting professors - Roger Brown and Roger King. And we are particularly pleased to be able to include three contributions from a new generation of higher education researchers – Marina Elias, Manja Klemenčič and Sofia Sousa – who also bring welcome international perspectives to the report. The sub-theme of the report is ‘looking back and looking forward’. Over its nearly 19 years of existence, CHERI has worked with some of the leading scholars in the higher education research field.     The Educational Backgrounds of Leading Journalists June 2006 NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE 00.01 HOURS THURSDAY JUNE 15TH 2006 1 Foreword by Sir Peter Lampl In a number of recent studies the Sutton Trust has highlighted the predominance of those from private schools in the country’s leading and high profile professions1. In law, we found that almost 70% of barristers in the top chambers had attended fee-paying schools, and, more worryingly, that the young partners in so called ‘magic circle’ law firms were now more likely than their equivalents of 20 years ago to have been independently-educated. In politics, we showed that one third of MPs had attended independent schools, and this rose to 42% among those holding most power in the main political parties. Now, with this study, we have found that leading news and current affairs journalists – those figures who are so central in shaping public opinion and national debate – are more likely than not to have been to independent schools which educate just 7% of the population. Of the top 100 journalists in 2006, 54% were independently educated an increase from 49% in 1986. Not only does this say something about the state of our education system, but it also raises questions about the nature of the media’s relationship with society: is it healthy that those who are most influential in determining and interpreting the news agenda have educational backgrounds that are so different to the vast majority of the population? What is clear is that an independent school education offers a tremendous boost to the life chances of young people, making it more likely that they will attain highly in school exams, attend the country’s leading universities and gain access to the highest and most prestigious professions.

Universities are caught in a financial pincer, which we have to transcend without compromising academic quality.
