SPEARS Under the Direction of Layli Phillips Maparyan ABSTRACT This study examines the ways in which Black gay men in Atlanta create and experience community and culture every day, notwithstanding those discursive sources that situate life for Black gay men as particularly troubled. Drawing on ethnographic methods, including participant observation and interviewing, I attempt to show the complexity of Black gay men by exploring their world in Atlanta, Georgia, a city that has increasingly become known as a Black Gay Mecca. Qualitative research examining the ways Black gay men create and experience community has the potential to broaden academic discourses that have increasingly medicalized the Black gay male experience, and complicate popular social sentiment which (when recognizing the existence of Black gay men) often posits their life as one dimensional or dimensionless. This thesis seeks to add to qualitative research, drawing on ethnographic methods to consider the question “How do Black gay men experience community in Atlanta, a so-called Black gay Mecca?” A close examination of the ways in which Black gay men create and experience community has the potential to broaden academic discourses that have increasingly medicalized the Black gay male experience, and complicate popular social sentiment which (when recognizing the existence of Black gay men) often posits their life as one dimensional or dimensionless. Although this study focuses on Black gay male subjectivity to elicit group sentiment, I do not mean to diminish the reality of subjective experience or trivialize the lives of Black gay men living with HIV/AIDS, as one diagnosis affects us all. Instead, this research serves to illuminate the culture of Black gay men by showing the complexity of the group and its members. Significance of the Problem In a cursory review of academic themed search engines, designed to be used by scholars and students alike, a search of the term “Black gay men” yields some not surprising, but very interesting results. In the interdisciplinary search engine JSTOR, the anthropologist’s online research tool Anthropologyplus, the sociological collection at EBSCOhost, the psychology search engine Web of Science, and even Women’s Studies International also at EBSCOhost, all 2 return query results that seemingly reduce academic work about Black gay men to the following categories: public health studies, usually about HIV/AIDS; articles around down-low sexuality; studies on hyper-sexuality; the effects of homophobia; and narratives describing Black gay men as having warped perceptions of self due to lacking the ability to integrate queer sexuality with Black skin.1 Articles returned in this search speak also to the climate outside the academy, as popular culture often portrays limiting ideas of Black gay men. Cultural media rely on the overbearing caricature of the effeminate Black man who in an attempt to gain acceptance becomes the cunning comedian and site of comedy; or the self-loathing Black gay male caricature who is hyper-masculine, down-low, confused, and at any moment returning to “straight” (Nero, 2005; Robinson, 2009). What Max Pizarro we did have was a hostile government and an equally hostile Catholic Church driving our nation’s Editor-in-Chief AIDS policy. Which might explain why the life-saving AIDS “cocktail” was still years away, something [email protected] I blessedly wouldn’t need until 1998. Many listed below played a huge role taming the AIDS crisis and then delivering a raft of pro-LGBT laws in its wake. This list also includes the next generation of LGBTs already making their mark on the New Jersey political landscape. They’ve snatched the baton in a purposeful manner befitting a generation raised to dream bigger than mine ever could.

In recent years, the visibility of LGBTQ people in the music world has increased, and more popular music has been created that openly describes the LGBTQ experience. There has also been an increase in books and films related to LGBTQ visibility in popular music, both in fiction and nonfiction. This bibliography includes resources about gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons involved in the popular music field. The books have all been published in print, and many of them may also be found as e-books. Separate sections contain memoirs, novels, plays, and children’s and teen books. Several LGBT popular music-related DVDs are also listed. Each book and DVD has a link to the OCLC WorldCat record (when available) where you can see which libraries hold the item. Most of this resource is comprised of a discography of popular music recordings by LGBTQ artists. It is not meant to be complete, but many recordings still available in CD format for each artist are listed, and several are annotated. Many of these performers’ songs can now also be found on streaming music services and online digital music websites.

BY Charneka Lane ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the spatial and discursive practices of black queer women (hereafter BQW) in Washington, D.C. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted within “the Scene,” a colloquialism referring to the transient collection of leisure spaces in D.C. produced for and by other BQW including book clubs, professional sporting events, private house parties, semi-public events held in mainstream venues, happy hours, and annual Black Pride Celebrations, I explore the way BQW actively bend, borrow, and queer language, space, and black cultural values to make room for their unique expressions of black female sexuality within black sexual politics, American popular culture, and the urban landscape. There are two key levels of analysis: (1) I examine the way BQW produce and maintain the “BQW Scene” within the context of a city that is both “gay-friendly” and majority black; and, (2) using critical discourse analysis alongside queer theoretical approaches to the study of affect, I analyze discourses of belonging, self, and others which manifest in my informant’s discussions of the scene. This dissertation demonstrates how BQW make sense of multiple, sometimes contradictory normative practices related to race, gender, sexuality, and class.
