We spent all our lunch periods together in the schoolyard, watching the other kids play handball, tetherball, and basketball. I’ve enjoyed playing those games many times, but chilling was just our thing. I was twelve, and didn’t want to play as often anymore; I’d calmed down in some ways and found excitement in others. I was over kid shit, and I assumed Marcel was too. Although the south may not have an LGBT-friendly reputation, this bustling metropolis is an open, friendly and welcoming destination for all travelers. Here you’ll find a melting pot of cultures and a unique mix of southern charm with all the conveniences of big city living. Atlanta is also a historically significant location due to its Important role during the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Today, it’s known for world-class museums, shopping, outdoor spaces, southern cuisine and nightlife as well as thriving neighborhoods. One late winter weekend, Greg happened to drive by the Metro, a legendary Chicago music venue, and saw a line of kids that stretched down the block. What made the scene unusual wasn’t just the crowd—it was what they were waiting for: the marquee read, “Louder Than a Bomb Youth Poetry Slam Finals.” Teenagers, hundreds of them, of every shape, size, and color, lined up on a Saturday night to see poetry? In Chicago!? Whatever this thing is, it must be interesting. The more we saw, the more convinced we became that, in fact, it was. There was the LTAB community—a remarkable combination of democracy and meritocracy, where everyone’s voice is respected, but the kids all know who can really bring it. There were the performances themselves—bold, brave, and often searingly memorable. And there were the coaches, teachers, and parents, whose tireless support would become a quietly inspiring thread throughout the film.

    To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts. ~ Henry David Thoreau The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has long recognized the need for a robust arts and culture community to keep the region flourishing. As far back as Vision 2020 in the 1990s and continuing through Fifty Forward a decade later, ARC documented that thriving communities require more than infrastructure and a strong economy. The region’s soul must be fed, and arts and cultural oppor- tunities lead to a vibrant region. With this in mind, the ARC board decided to continue the work begun by the TMetro Atlanta Arts & Culture Coalition by incorporating arts and culture into our planning portfolio. Guided by an advisory committee of regional stakehold- ers and initiated by an interdisciplinary team of ARC staff, ARC identified six areas where the agency brings value to the regional arts and culture community: • Visualizing data: understanding the dynamics, demographics and numbers that underpin the cultural economy of the region • Building participation: encouraging collaboration to cultivate audiences and patronage • Creating a sustainable workforce: supporting the education pipeline that will maintain the region’s creative industries • Supporting and developing leadership: ensuring the visibility of arts and culture to regional leadership • Placemaking: creating livable, attractive and unique environments • Fostering innovation: exploring new topics in arts, culture and creative industries To explore our early thinking on the direction that we will take with this import- ant work, the interdisciplinary team developed a series of papers, three of which are published here. The papers address topics at the intersection of arts, culture, creative industries, economic development and traditional areas of planning, such as community development, workforce solutions and transportation ser- vices.

The Orthodox name him “The Theologian”1 – a title they accord only one other, St John the Apostle and Evangelist – and honour him with two feast- days, January 25th and January 30th. The western Catholic tradition has ranked him among “the Four Doctors of the Eastern Church”2 and honoured him on May 9th. (When the Roman Catholic church revised its Calendar in 1969, Gregory was joined with Basil the Great in a single memorial on January 2nd.3) In spite of these accolades, Gregory has not received anything like the attention that western scholars have devoted to other ancient writers. This is especially true in the English-speaking world. Until recently, the only major modern study of Gregory in English is Rosemary Radford Ruether’s Gregory of Nazianzus: Rhetor and Philosopher (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1969).
