TOP CAPS FACTS GREAT EIGHT - On Friday against Ottawa, Alex Ovechkin scored the 694th and 695th goals of his regular-season career to surpass Mark Messier (694) for sole possession of eighth place on the NHL's all-time goals list. - Ovechkin was named the NHL's First Star for the month of January. His 13 goals in 10 games tied for the fourth-most goals a player has scored in a month in 10 or fewer games since 1979-80 (Wayne Gretzky: February, 1984: 15 goals; Dino Ciccarelli: October, 1986: 14 goals; Alex Mogilny: February, 1993: 14 goals; Three other players with 13 goals), and he's the first to record at least 13 goals in 10 or fewer games in a month since Mogilny in 1993. - Ovechkin has 11 goals in his past five games, a first in his NHL career and the second such instance by any player age 34 or older (Joe Mullen: Dec. 17-26, 1991 with Pittsburgh). It also is the first time that he has recorded four multi-goal performances in a span of five appearances. - Ovechkin has leapfrogged four members of the in the past 19 days on the goals list – Teemu Selanne, , Steve Yzerman and Messier – in his pursuit of becoming the eighth player in NHL history to reach the 700-goal milestone. - Ovechkin now needs 200 goals to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the most in League history. - Ovechkin is on pace to go from 600 to 700 goals in only 154 games, which would mark the fewest games to make that leap for any member of the 700-goal club. It also would be the second-fewest games to get from one 100-goal milestone to another in his career.

GUNNING FOR CALDER - Ilya Samsonov recorded 25 saves on Friday against Ottawa to extend his personal win streak to 11 straight decisions. He joined Ross Brooks (14-0-0 in 1973-74) and George Hainsworth (11-0-0 in 1926-27) as just the third rookie goaltender in NHL history to string together wins in 11 consecutive decisions. - The rookie, who has a 16-2-1 record through 20 games (2.11 goals against average, .925 save percentage and 1 shutout), also improved to 10-0-0 as the visitor this season and sits one win shy of joining Brent Johnson (11-0-0 from Feb. 26, 1999 to Jan. 13, 2001 with St. Louis) as the second goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first 11 road decisions to begin his career. - He leads the NHL among all with at least 20 games played in goals against average and tied with Dallas' Ben Bishop for the sixth highest save percentage. - Samsonov is the only goaltender in the NHL with fewer than four losses and at least 20 games played. - Samsonov has recorded a .706 quality start percentage - the percentage of starts a goaltender records a save percentage higher than the League average (.908) – which ranks third in the NHL among goaltenders with at least 20 games, trailing Arizona’s Darcy Kuemper (.760 qs%) and New York's Thomas Greiss (.714 qs%). - Since the 1955-56 season - the first season the NHL began recording save percentages - only one goaltender aged 22 or younger has recorded as low a goals against average and as high a save percentage in at least 20 games in a single season as Samsonov.
