TEAM NOTES:

ECF REVISITED Tonight’s game marks the first time that the Penguins and Lightning will meet since Pittsburgh’s 2-1 win in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals series between the clubs sent Pittsburgh to the Stanley Cup Final. This is the Penguins’ first visit to Amalie Arena since a 5-2 win in Game 6, arguably the biggest win of Pittsburgh’s Cup run. That night, Pittsburgh entered trailing the series, 3-2, with the series hanging in the balance. The adversity grew that evening when Tampa Bay’s Jonathan Drouin appeared to have staked the Lightning to a 1-0 lead at 5:12 of the first period. But Penguins video coach Andy Saucier noticed Drouin appeared to be offside, and the Penguins won the challenge, then went on to win the game. The series was about as close as one can be, with Pittsburgh winning, 4-3, and outscoring the Lightning by a slim 21-18 advantage. Four of the games were decided by one goal, with Games 2 and 5 going to overtime. Sidney Crosby had the game-winning goals in three of Pittsburgh’s four wins, including his first playoff OT goal in Game 2. Bryan Rust scored both goals in the Game 7 victory. Phil Kessel (4G-2A), Chris Kunitz (3G-3A) and Evgeni Malkin (1G-5a) tied for the Pittsburgh scoring lead. Nikita Kucherov (2G-5A-7PTS) paced the Lightning. Drouin and Kessel paced all skaters with four goals each.

NUMBERS vs. TBL Penguins forwards Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz carry impressive numbers against the Lightning into tonight’s contest. Malkin has an active 12-game point streak versus Tampa Bay (13G-15A-28PTS). He has recorded multiple points in nine of the 12 games. Kunitz has notched at least one point in 11 of his past 13 contests against Tampa Bay (9G-8A-17PTS). Crosby also has points in 11 of his past 13 games against the Lightning (9G-16A-25PTS).

SPARK PLUGS Sidney Crosby’s line ensured the Penguins played from ahead on Thursday night. Matt Cullen’s unit finished off the Panthers. The trio of Cullen, Scott Wilson and Tom Kuhnhackl combined to score Pittsburgh’s third and fourth goals, together tallying two goals and four points in the victory. Wilson assisted goals by Cullen and Kuhnhackl to record the first multiple-point game of his NHL career. Cullen’s tally marked his third- straight game scoring a goal, his longest goal-scoring run since a three-game streak from Nov. 27-30, 2009. If he scores tonight, Cullen would equal his career-long goal-scoring streak. Cullen has seven goals in 27 games, putting the 40 year old on pace for 21 goals. Last year, he scored 16 times.

SIMPLY SID Dating back to last season, Sidney Crosby has gone 42 consecutive games without going back-to-back games without a point. During that stretch, he has points in 37 of the 42 games, amassing a total of 58 points (29G-29A). The last time he was held without a point in two-straight games – Feb. 24-27. Crosby has yet to go back-to-back games without a goal this year. Crosby has points in a season-high-tying six-straight games (4G-6A-10PTS).

STAR ROOKIE Matt Murray isn’t your typical NHL rookie, having already backstopped Pittsburgh to a Stanley Cup championship last spring before embarking on his first full NHL campaign this year. Through the first two-plus months, he is proving his success wasn’t a fluke. Murray has won nine of his first 11 decisions this year, with his nine wins ranking first among all rookie netminders. Heading into Friday night, Murray ranked fifth in the league with a 1.91 goals-against average and fourth with a .934 save percentage.

RANDOM HODGE PODGE *December is Pittsburgh’s second-busiest month of the year with 15 games (March; 16 games). Thus far the Penguins have gone 4-0 in the month. *Ten of the 15 games the Penguins will play in December will come at PPG Paints Arena. *Pittsburgh is 11-1-2 this year in games when Sidney Crosby scores a goal. *Since Crosby returned from missing the first six games of the season with a concussion, he has points in 17 of 21 games. The Penguins are 13-2-2 when he records a point and 1-3 when he does. *Thirteen of Pittsburgh’s 50 wins under Mike Sullivan have come after the Penguins have faced a multi-goal deficit at some point during the game. *Ian Cole and Justin Schultz have recorded 11 of their points this season at even-strength. Entering Friday night’s game, only five defensemen in the entire NHL had recorded more, and their names read like an All-Star Team: Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Dustin Byfuglien, Duncan Keith and Mike Green. *Cole and Schultz entered Friday night tied for the NHL lead among blueliners with a plus-16.

FAST FACTS FROM #PITvsFLA *Pittsburgh’s 30 shots on goal marked its lowest total since registering 26 shots on Nov. 16 at Washington. The Penguins did outshoot their opponent for the sixth-straight game (did so just 9 times in the first 21 games). *The Penguins have scored at least five goals in four-straight games (outscoring foes, 24-11, during the span). *Justin Schultz had two assists to run his point streak to five games (3G-5A-8PTS), equaling his career-long run. *Not only did Matt Murray get his team-leading ninth win, but he assisted Carl Hagelin’s empty-net goal, the first point of Murray’s NHL career. *Sidney Crosby’s goal was his 11th road goal of the year, which led the NHL as of Friday night. *Conor Sheary added two more points (1G-1A) to give himself six points (3G-3A) over his past five contests. *Evgeni Malkin had his season-best six-game point streak (2G-9A-11PTS) come to a close. Ian Cole’s four-game run (1G-6A-7PTS) also came to a close. *Cole had picked up multiple points in three-straight games before the Florida contests, the first Penguin blueliner not named Kris Letang to do so since in 2007.
