FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE South Shore Line continues running CUBS EXTRA train for postseason Home World Series Cubs games. Take the South Shore Line (SSL) to Chicago for the Cubs World Series! Even if the game runs into extra innings, SSL has you covered on your trip home! The SSL will provide a CUBS EXTRA train departing Millennium Station 90 minutes following the conclusion of each scheduled night game at Wrigley Field. The CUBS EXTRA train will run nonstop to Hegewisch and make all local stops to Michigan City. The CUBS EXTRA train will not serve Hudson Lake or South Bend. Check out the SSL schedule for train times & fares at www.mysouthshoreline.com. Getting to Wrigley Field from South Shore Line (Millennium Station): • Take the SSL to Millennium Station. • Walk to CTA Washington Station. (Head west on Randolph St. for one block, and turn south on State St. The entrance is adjacent to Macy’s.) • Take the Red Line to Addison stop in Wrigleyville. • Take a short walk to Wrigley Field. (Head west on Addison St. for ½ block.) Returning to the South Shore Line (Millennium Station) from Wrigley Field: • Immediately following the game, walk from Wrigley Field to the Red Line Addison stop in Wrigleyville. • Take the Red Line to CTA Washington Station. Blue Line Forest Park Branch Feasibility/Vision EXISTING CONDITIONS ASSESSMENT Executive Summary September 23, 2013 Service on the Forest Park Branch of the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) began operations as the Congress Branch of CTA’s West-Northwest Route in late June 1958. This line, located in the median of the Congress Expressway, replaced an older rapid transit service, the Garfield Park Branch of the CTA, which had its beginnings in 1895. Many of the current infrastructure assets are original and date to the opening of the line. Other assets have undergone interim repair or replacement, but are overdue for replacement as of 2013. Throughout the history of the Forest Park Branch, maintenance has been conducted with a piecemeal approach in order to sustain safe operations. This level of investment however has not been able to sustain the level of service intended for the route, resulting in aged infrastructure, slow orders and an overall reduced quality of service for customers. In order to provide a quality, efficient service for customers, there is a need for near total replacement and modernization of assets for the Forest Park Branch of the Blue Line. The Congress Branch opened with stations on an approximate one-mile spacing. Station design aspects included concrete-surfaced island platforms and long ramps which connected to major (and in some cases, intermediate) cross-streets. Auxiliary entrances were included at several of the stations to increase the station catchment area. Connections to CTA and suburban bus routes (where available) have been a feature of these stations since their opening. -

My very first day of work was the day that service cuts went into effect. My job was to go out and explain why they were necessary. It forced me to think quickly about the decisions and events that had caused the CTA to get off track. But more importantly, it made me focus on the future and the steps necessary to rebuild this agency, inside and out, into the successful, respected transit system that it had been and had the potential to be again. Although 1998 presented its share of challenges, ultimately it has been a very rewarding year. The CTA has made tremendous gains. Much of the credit belongs to the many dedicated and talented employees who have worked so hard this year. -

2020 HISTORICAL CALENDAR Added historical notes follow calendar Chicago Transit Authority JANUARY 2020 After a snow in December 1951, CTA streetcar #4231 is making its way down Halsted to its terminus at 79th Street. Built in 1948 by the Pullman Company in Chicago, car #4231 was part of a fleet of 600 Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) cars ordered by Chicago Surface Lines (CSL) just before its incorporation into the Chicago Transit Authority. At 48 feet, these were the longest streetcars used in any city. Their comfortable riding experience, along with their characteristic humming sound and color scheme, earned them being nicknamed “Green Hornets” after a well-known radio show of the time. These cars operated on Chicago streets until the end of streetcar service, June 21, 1958. Car #4391, the sole survivor, is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL.
