  • The Whirlwind Blows Into Fast and Furious Snooker's
Marcel Eckardt might not be a name you are familiar with, in snooker. 21 year old Marcel is part of the new breed of referees. “This interview is the first I have done; I am a little bit excited.”At 21 Mar- cel describes himself as organised, helpful and friendly all good qualities doe a referee. How did the German born ref get into snooker? “I was 13 I think, I watched it on telly and found it interesting. I never got the chance to play snooker growing up as there were no tables near where I lived. Snooker and Pool aren’t popular in my region but I want to do my best to change that. “I love to play but you can’t be a player and a referee, so my solution to this was play pool. I started at 19 far too late to reach anything, but I’m not bad at it. It helps me learn more to improve my skills as a referee as well.” Snooker is seeing a change, with new players and recently a large intake of young referee’s, what interests young people in the game? “I think snooker is the perfect alternative for young people. Not everyone follows the crowd and favours team sports. Skills like concentration, tactic but also mental strength are important for snooker.” “Refereeing the final on PHC was exciting but, I had spent the day before feeling really ill, I felt confident and very proud to be given the opportunity. I would next like to referee the World Championship final, that’s the dream.” Referee’s in all sports face a lot of stick from fans, but it seems snooker fans are more respectful.

  • The Professionalisation of British Darts, 1970 – 1997
From a Pub Game to a Sporting Spectacle: The professionalisation of British Darts, 1970 – 1997 Leon Davis Abstract: Various sport scholars have noted the transition of sports from amateur leisure pastimes to professionalised and globalised media sporting spectacles. Recent developments in darts offer an excellent example of these changes, yet the sport is rarely discussed in contemporary sports studies. The only sustained theoretical research on darts focuses primarily on the origins of the sport in its nostalgic form as a working-class, pub taproom pastime in England. This article critically examines the transformation of darts from a leisurely game to a professional sport between the 1970s and the 1990s. The change was enabled by the creation of the British Darts Organisation (BDO) and the introduction of television broadcasting, which together fed a continual process of professionalisation. Initially, this article discusses both the concept of professionalisation and similar developmental changes in a selection of English sports. Following this, via selected interviews, documentary analysis and archival information, the reasons behind the split in darts are explicated, shedding light on how the BDO did not successfully manage the transformation and the sport split into two governing bodies, from which the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), the sport’s most successful organisation in the present day, has emerged to dominate the world of televised darts. Keywords: Darts, professionalisation, television, game, sport Introduction For much of the twentieth century, darts was a predominantly working-class game played by local people and top-ranked players in British pubs and social clubs. However, since the 1970s, the game has rapidly changed from a communal game into a sporting entertainment spectacle.

  • Televized Sport, Soap Opera and Male and Female Pleasures BARBARA O'connor School of Communications, Dublin City University, Dublin 9, Ireland
Dallas with balls: televized sport, soap opera and male and female pleasures BARBARA O'CONNOR School of Communications, Dublin City University, Dublin 9, Ireland RAYMOND BOYLE Communication Department, Glasgow Caledonian University, 70 Concaddens Road, Glasgow G4 0BA, Scotland, UK Two of the most popular of television genres, soap opera and sports coverage have been very much differentiated along gender lines in terms of their audiences. Soap opera has been regarded very much as a 'gynocentric' genre with a large female viewing audience while the audiences for television sport have been predominantly male. Gender differentiation between the genres has had implications for the popular image of each. Soap opera has been perceived as inferior; as mere fantasy and escapism for women while television sports has been perceived as a legitimate, even edifying experience for men. In this article the authors challenge the view that soap opera and television sport are radically different and argue that they are, in fact, very similar in a number of significant ways. They suggest that both genres invoke similar structures of feeling and sensibility in their respective audiences and that television sport is a 'male soap opera'. They consider the ways in which the viewing context of each genre is related to domestic life and leisure, the ways in which the textual structure and conventions of each genre invoke emotional identification, and finally, the ways in which both genres re-affirm gender identities. 'Explain the success of snooker on television? "Simple, it's Dallas with balls.' Barry Hearn, sports entrepreneur, interview with Raymond Boyle, April 1987.

  • We Go to the Opera to Eat Voice 1
Notes 1 Introduction: Voice, Queer, Technologies 1. Operatic and other highly trained professional singers are often heard to talk about “the voice” as opposed to “my voice,” imply- ing that they perceive the voice as an instrument that is not exactly and entirely part of them. In listening, however, the overriding discourse is of the voice as emerging not only from the body but also the very being of the singer, something explored in further detail below. 2. See also Michel Chion on the acousmêtre and the acousmatic voice (1999). 3. One very clear example of the confusion to be found in “The Grain of the Voice” is Barthes’s asking his readers to allow the follow- ing three statements to coexist: the grain is “the body in the voice as it sings” (188); he hears the lungs in Fischer-Dieskau’s singing (183); and Fischer-Dieskau’s art is “borne by a voice lacking in any ‘grain’ ” (185). 4. Oxford English Dictionary. 5. One notable exception to this rule of thumb is Lynne Huffer’s Mad for Foucault (2010), in which the author calls upon scholars to notice the importance of Foucault’s earlier History of Madness (2006) in the genealogy of queer theory. 6. Oxford English Dictionary. 7. I intend this to be both adjective and noun. 8. See also Carolyn Abbate’s Unsung Voices (1991, 11–12), Edward Cone’s The Composer’s Voice (1974) and Heidi Epstein’s Melting the Venusberg (2004, 6). 2 Identification: We Go to the Opera to Eat Voice 1. It would require much more work than there is space for here to determine the true comparability of miming air-reliant instruments 166 NOTES and singing; my instinct is that the separation of air production from the fingering of the instrument means that there can be a lower expectation for the miming party to simulate air production than there is with singing, where the relationship of air to mouth movements is essential and easily perceptible.

Jimmy White Free to press interview Now back from three weeks in the Jungle on “I’m a Celebrity get me out of here”, a new lean Jimmy White is beginning his build up to Christmas with his family but also the Masters Snooker Tournament at Wembley and the launch of a new project which will see Jimmy returning to famous snooker venues, including the Crucible and Telford, to lock horns once again with Alex Higgins, John Virgo, John Parrott and Cliff Thorburn at the launch of a new venture... Snooker Legends. We caught up with Jimmy a few days after his return from Australia and the day after he received his invitation to the Masters. So Jimmy, we have to start by saying how great you look, the Australian diet of cockroaches and bugs is perhaps a lesson for us all in weight loss? “I lost 22lbs during my time in the Jungle; I feel fitter, have more energy and learnt an awful lot about working as a team and surviving without things like mobile phones, computers and a snooker cue!” Is that the longest time you’ve gone without picking up a snooker cue? “Absolutely, but sometimes having a break is good, I’m back practising hard now for the Masters in January and of course the Snooker Legends Events” Was it a surprise to get the Masters Wildcard, many people had their money on Liang Wenbo after his exploits in Shanghai and at the UK Championships? “It was really a great surprise to get the invitation to the Masters and I am absolutely thrilled.
