Rudnicki ENGL 480 14 November 2013 Beyond Space Colonialism: Otherness in Orson Scott Card’s Speaker for the Dead As a sequel to the much acclaimed Ender’s Game , Speaker for the Dead presents a future where most of humanity’s actions are a result of dealing with the guilt of destroying the only other known intelligent life form in the universe, the “buggers.” Taking place some three thousand years after the events of Ender’s Game , the sequel explores the social implications of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin’s actions, as well as the results of space colonization. The society presented in the novel is composed of “the Hundred Worlds,” planets colonized by humans and bound by “ansible” communication and the laws of the “Starways Congress.” When Portuguese colonizers discover the “pequeninos” or “piggies,” intelligent alien life forms in the newly colonized Lusitania, humanity is given the opportunity to coexist with aliens and make amends for the destruction of the buggers. However, soon the inability of humans to understand the seemingly brutal customs of the pequeninos threatens to trigger another alien war. The discovery of the pequeninos and the resulting relations between them and the humans reflect old colonial anxieties that were present during Euro-American colonization. These anxieties result from the age-old fear of “otherness.” In Speaker for the Dead , otherness not only takes the form of an alien “other,” but Card takes it one step further by exploring different levels of foreignness outside and within a community. Individuals in the novel are not merely foreign or alien because they belong to a different race or community, but because societal barriers intended to protect Andréu - 2 them (and the community) result in the inability to communicate effectively, and thus in foreignness. -

The four novels Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion constitute the Hyperion Cantos by the American science fiction writer Dan Simmons. This galactic-empire, epic, science fiction narrative contains a plethora of literary references. The dominant part comes from the nineteenth-century Romantic poet John Keats. The inclusion of passages from his poetry and letters is pursued in my analysis. Employing Lubomír Doležel’s categorizations of intertextuality— “transposition,” “expansion,” and “displacement”—I seek to show how Keats’s writings and his persona constitute a privileged intertext in Simmons’s tetralogy and I show its function. Simmons constructs subsidiary plots, some of which are driven by Keats’s most well-known poetry. In consequence, some of the subplots can be regarded as rewrites of Keats’s works. Although quotations of poetry have a tendency to direct the reader’s attention away from the main plot, slowing down the narrative, such passages in the narratives evoke Keats’s philosophy of empathy, beauty and love, which is fundamental for his humanism. For Keats, the poet is a humanist, giving solace to mankind through his poetry. I argue that the complex intertextual relationships with regards to Keats’s poetry and biography show the way Simmons expresses humanism as a belief in man’s dignity and worth, and uses it as the basis for his epic narrative. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine. -
Ender's Game Took the Sf World by Storm, Sweeping the Awards
Ender’s Game Andrew "Ender" Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games; he is, in fact, engaged in something far more desperate. The result of genetic experimentation, Ender may be the military genius Earth desperately needs in a war against an alien enemy seeking to destroy all human life. Hiding their youth and identities behind the anonymity of the computer networks, these two begin working together to shape the destiny of Earth-an Earth that has no future at all if their brother Ender fails. Teaching the Conflicts Neal Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle Lee Barbrook Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University May 2012 Abstract I read Neal Town Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon and The Baroque Cycle to interrogate what types of links they make to US countercultural writing, postmodern discourse in American culture, and perceived uninterrogated links to the term America itself in images of modern progressive liberalism. Postmodernist readings of literary texts came under increasing public scrutiny in intellectual debates of the 80s and 90s. My analysis is to situate and reconsider these fictions within debates happening in the North American academy at this time and the more recent one concerning the demise of poststructuralism in the humanities. Linking together works of Sean McCann, Michael Szalay, John Guillory and Mark McGurl I locate Cryptonomicon as constitutive of the postwar drift from the modernist aesthetic yet simultaneously developing within Sacvan Bercovitch’s model of dissensus. Through reference to McGurl’s work in particular, my thesis will offer the first sustained critical reading of Cryptonomicon relevant to the University’s new teaching standards of diversity and research excellence . Through Lauren Berlant’s concept of an intimate public I argue The Baroque Cycle develops a richly aesthetic form of criticism that challenges the consensus view of culturally affirming alternatives to American sociopolitical and economic life. In addition, each chapter charts specific aspects of the impact of European critical theories that presided over the marriage of intellectualism and professionalism in the North American academy. More specifically, and throwing particular focus on resistances to theory and canon change, I discuss how the politics of the classroom developed within the literary culture wars brought with it a renewed emphasis on what postwar professors taught in the classroom. -

Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Lois McMaster Bujold June 2018 It's been over 30 years since the epic, bestselling Vorkosigan Saga launched with “Shards of Honor,” and author Lois McMaster Bujold continues to mine new depths for the characters and settings in her rich science fiction universe. Set approximately 1,000 years in the future in a system of fictional planets (and occasionally on Earth), the series follows Miles Vorkosigan, a man as gifted in military tactics and interplanetary politics as he is at stumbling into trouble. Beyond the Vorkosigan Saga, Bujold has written books in the Chalion series and The Sharing Knife series. Known for her wit, warmth, and operatic, action-packed plots, Bujold has won the Hugo Award for Best Novel four times, the Hugo Award for Best Novella, and three Nebula Awards. Jo Zebedee: How integral are the short works to the Vorkosigan universe? LMB: As integral as any of the novels, in my opinion. (Well, maybe excepting “Weatherman”, which is an out-take from the novel The Vor Game, and thus double-dipping.) The reader may pick up three of the (currently) six in one package in the collection Borders of Infinity; the other two are still ala carte. Michael Rowe: Did you have an expectation on how we would view the Cetaganda Nobles and the Vor? (One more agreeable one less so?) LMB: The Vor are an ordinary sort of aristocracy, so that will depend on how one feels about aristocracies. The Cetagandans have a two-tier system, of which the upper level, the haut, turn out to be an ongoing genetics project aiming at creating post-humans. -

This program is open to all students; it is required for students who are taking advanced English 8 next year, and it is an extra credit assignment for those who will be taking a regular English class (the amount of extra credit will be determined by each teacher). How to Participate in the Summer Reading Program: 1) Choose a group of books from the list provided (e.g. “Classic Science Fiction”). This should be a new group, not one you’ve already done. 2) Read all the books in that category. 3) Complete a reading record card for each book. 4) Type an essay (using MLA format). Prompt: Choose your favorite book from the summer reading and discuss why you liked it. Your essay must have an introduction with a thesis statement, a body, and a conclusion. Please provide specific examples of what you liked, but avoid a simple plot summary. Remember to cite evidence from the book. Finish your essay by convincing someone who hasn’t read the book that it is a must read. Incoming 6th graders: The essay must be 400 words. Incoming 7th and 8th graders: The essay must be 500 words. 5) Turn in your reading cards and essay to your teacher on the first day of school in August. Please note that turning in an incomplete packet to your teacher may result in zero credit. -
