Position Description Head of House – Senior Boys Boarding The School The Armidale School (TAS) is an Anglican co-educational boarding and day school with a Junior School (Transition to Year 5), Middle School (Years 6-8) and Senior School (Years 9-12). The School has an enrolment of around 650 students, including over 250 boarders. TAS values and actively pursues individual academic performance and effort, but a TAS education is a comprehensive one, presenting every student with the experiences that create character and resilience, promote creativity, initiative and leadership and prepare them for life. We are proud of our history and traditions and membership of the AAGPS, yet at the same time we are liberal and progressive. TAS staff are intrinsically involved in all aspects of the co-curricular program, allowing them to build greater understanding and rapport with each student. Boarding at TAS Throughout the history of the School, boarding has been central to the identity and success of the School as a whole and this remains the case today. Our 250 boarders comprise approximately half the secondary school population and many elements of school life are organised to support our boarding community. Boarders reside in 6 separate boarding houses, all on campus and a short walk to teaching areas. Boy boarders in Years 6, 7 and 8 are accommodated in the Middle School House, White. In Year 9, boarders move into one of the three senior houses, Abbott, Croft and Tyrrell. The Residence for the Head of House is provided on or nearby the campus. Girl boarders reside in two separate houses, one for Middle School girls and the other for senior girls (Yrs 9-12). Responsibilities of the Position Teaching: The Head of House is a senior member of the school staff and occupies a key position in the strategic vision of the School. The Head of House teaches in either (Middle and/or Senior School). The current teaching load is 0.6 of a full time load (the full time load is 50 periods of 45 minutes each per fortnight). Administration: The Head of House is responsible for the day-to-day running of the House. This includes upholding the rules and expectations in line with overall school policy, the establishment of routines consistent with the overall boarding environment of the School, maintenance of the House budget, meticulous attention to WH&S and fire and emergency procedures and the diligent keeping of records using REACH Boarding Software. Pastoral Care: The Head of House is responsible for the pastoral welfare of the 50 to 60 boarders in their respective House. This includes active responsibility for their overall wellbeing, supervision and mentoring and liaising with parents, and other staff and stakeholders. This role will include rostered hours but will also demand time that extends well beyond the time required for administrative duties and rostered duties. Parents: The Head of House is responsible for the care of boarders, and therefore has a responsibility to get to know and work closely with their parents. Regular, effective, personal communication with parents is a core expectation of the role. Staff: The Head of House leads a boarding team that may include a Deputy Head of House, who lives on campus and is a member of the teaching staff, a part-time House Mother and residential staff who are generally university students residing in the House. The Head of House is responsible for the leadership of this team, including the setting of expectations, duty rosters and regular appraisal of performance. House Fabric: The Head of House is responsible for ensuring that the fabric of the House is kept in good order. It is expected that this will include frequent inspection of the House, reporting and follow-up of maintenance issues and planning for replacement and renovation of furniture and fixtures. The successful applicant will be expected: • To be supportive of the Christian ethos of the school, including attendance at chapel • To have experience in and a clearly articulated understanding of the boarding school environment • To possess well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage with students, staff and parents • To be able to contribute as a positive and productive member of the residential staff team • To demonstrate leadership and initiative in setting the tone of the boarding house for both students and staff General Selection Criteria • Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support the boarding house environment • Relevant teaching experience and qualifications as required by the NSW Institute of Teachers • Ability to contribute to the pastoral and co-curricular programs in the school Conditions The Head of House will teach a 0.6 FTE teaching load in the Middle and/or Senior School. The teaching area will be negotiated with the successful applicant. In addition to the teaching load there is an expectation of pastoral and extra- curricular involvement within the School. Each applicant should state his/her particular interests and expertise within these areas. Salary will be paid at Coordinator 2 level. Salaries and conditions for the position are governed by the Independent Schools NSW Teachers (Hybrid Model) Multi- Enterprise Agreement 2017 or any instrument that replaces the award.. In addition, a free standing house will be provided, rent free, with subsidised utilities.
