Yrd. The Ottoman Documents and the Genocidal Policies of the Committee for Union and Progress (_Ittihat ve Terakki) toward the Armenians in 1915 Taner Akc¸am University of Minnesota The author analyzes the Ottoman Archives as a source of information on the Armenian Genocide of 1915. He discusses the contradictory positions of two broad groups of scholars on the reliability of these archives, concluding that the Ottoman Archives agree with the information found in the archives of the United States, Britain, Germany, and Austria. He discusses the various categories of Ottoman documents, which mostly came out during the trials related to the Armenian Genocide, which took place from 1919 to 1921, and makes clear that there was a wide-ranging cleansing operation of the archives after the armistice in 1918.

Years of misrule, war, and oppression of its various nationalities had virtually driven the Turks from Europe, leaving the weakened Empire on the verge of collapse. By the 1870s the Armenians were the most troubling group, having gained international sympathy at the Congress of Berlin.

Talaat Pasha, or the Revenge Assassination of a Condemned Man Sévane Garibian* (author postprint) Abstract Talaat Pasha, the chief instigator of the Armenian genocide, died at the hands of an assassin in 1921 in Berlin, where he was living in hiding under a false name. His killer, the survivor and avenger of the genocide, Soghomon Tehlirian, sought to use his own trial as a platform to condemn the acts of the murderer of his people – a murderer who had already been sentenced to death in absentia in his own country by a court martial in Constantinople. This perpetrator now lies in a mausoleum built in memory of the “heroes of the fatherland” on the hill of the Monument of Liberty alongside his erstwhile Minister of War, Enver Pasha, in the very heart of Istanbul. This chapter aims to shed light on the link between the perpetrator’s violent end, the treatment of his remains and the negationist policy which is still in place in Turkey. Keywords: Talaat Pasha; Soghomon Tehlirian; revenge; Armenian genocide; negationism; secondary witness; recognition.

  • Revisiting the Armenian Genocide by Guenter Lewy Middle East Quarterly Fall 2005
http://www.meforum.org/article/748 This item is available on the Middle East Forum website, at http://www.meforum.org/article/748 Revisiting the Armenian Genocide by Guenter Lewy Middle East Quarterly Fall 2005 The debate over what happened to Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during World War I remains acrimonious ninety years after it began. Armenians say they were the victims of the first genocide of the twentieth century. Most Turks say Armenians died during intercommunal fighting and during a wartime relocation necessitated by security concerns because the Armenians sympathized with and many fought on the side of the enemy. For genocide scholars, the claims of the Armenians have become incontrovertible historical fact. But many historians, both in Turkey and the West, have questioned the appropriateness of the genocide label.[1] The ramifications of the dispute are wide-reaching. The Armenians, encouraged by strong support in France, insist on a Turkish confession and apology as a prerequisite for Turkey's admission into the European Union. Ankara's relations with Yerevan remain frozen because of the dispute. Across the West, Armenian activists try politically to predetermine the historical debate by demanding various parliaments pass resolutions recognizing the Armenian genocide. The key issue in this controversy is not the extent of Armenian suffering; both sides agree that several hundred thousand Christians perished during the deportation of the Armenians from Anatolia to the Syrian desert and elsewhere in 1915-16.[2] With little notice, the Ottoman government forced men, women, and children from their homes. Many died of starvation or disease during a harrowing trek over mountains and through deserts.

Prof. Dr. Taner Akçam Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts The Memoir of Naim Bey and Talat Pasha Telegrams Are They »Armenian Forgeries« or Not? Vortrag Dienstag, 23. Mai 2017 In 1920/21, author and editor Aram Andonian published a book known in 10 bis 12 Uhr English as »The Memoirs of Naim Bey«. It contained the writings of an Humboldt-Universität Berlin Ottoman official and telegrams of Talat Pasha, Interior Minister and Institut für Sozialwissen- leading member of the Committee of Union and Progress, containing schaften order for the killing of Armenians. Universitätsstraße 3b In 1983, the Turkish Historical Society published a work in Turkish that 10117 Berlin claimed Andonian’s memoirs and the Talat Pasha cables were fake. The authors’ claims rested on three main arguments: 1) the Ottoman bureau- crat Naim Efendi did not exist; 2) it was thus impossible for him to have written memoirs; 3) the telegraphic cables attributed to Talat Pasha were invented by Adonian. Until now, the Turkish claims against Andonian have remained unanswered and have become the cornerstone of denialism. Having established the archival sources and documents needed for a proper scholarly assessment, Akçam poses the question: Is it time to remove one of the last bricks in the denialist wall and watch the façade crumble? He will decisively disprove two of the three arguments of 1983. Additionally, by drawing on Ottoman archival documents, he will disprove the claims that the Talat Pasha cables were inauthentic. The central arguments advanced by Turkish denialists regarding the inauthenticity of these incriminating cables, are simply wrong. Taner Akçam holds the Robert Aram and Marianne Kaloosdian and Stephen and Marian Mugar Professor of Armenian Genocide Studies at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies.

  • The Genocide of the Armenians, 1915-1917
11 THE ULTIMATE REPRESSION: THE GENOCIDE OF THE ARMENIANS, 1915-1917 Gerard J. Libaridian INTRODUCTION Exterminations of families, tribes, and ethnic or religious groups have been known to occur since the dawn of history. The particular heinous- ness of mass death, however, has brought the gradual recognition of such acts as crimes against humanity. Planned and systematic genocides have even acquired a wider scope, while technology has increased their efficiency. Given the technological advances in military and biological hardware, the degrees to which many groups depend on governmental policies for their survival, the abrupt changes which traditional societies undergo when facing the challenge of modernization, and the increase in tensions between nations due to the diminishing resources available for distribution, one can expect governments to have recourse to radical solutions such as genocide to solve real or imaginary problems. Geno- cide thus may become merely another manifestation of what differen- tiates a state from other institutions: its monopoly of the right to kill enemies of society and to ask its citizens to kill enemies of the state or to be killed doing it. A corollary to the above hypothesis is that certain groups that seek change in a system, particularly a traditional one, are more likely to be victims of genocide. This is especially true when the ideology of the state characterizes a potential victim as both an enemy of society (of the internal order) and of the state.1 The genocide of the Armenian people during World War I is the earliest case of a documented modern day extermination of a nation.

It is to be completed in two fifty-minute class periods, with 2 homework assignments, one before and another between the lessons. Teacher Directions 1. Teacher assigns Homework 1, Brief History of the Armenian Genocide the day before beginning this unit. After the reading which ends at the turn of the 20th century, students should write two paragraphs describing what they think the next chapter will be, focusing on the Armenians and the history they have already read. Day 1 - Teacher Directions 1. Teacher shows video: ABC News, The Century: The Forgotten Genocide (5 minutes) The video can be viewed on YouTube at https://youtu.be/8WlN7BQrrYg and the DVD can be ordered from The Genocide Education Project, [email protected] 2. As a class, students should read aloud the three i witness personal accounts (Student Handout 2.) This is a good introduction to the voice of the victims and the students will have a chance to raise any questions or concerns. If time permits, students can read additional i witness personal accounts, downloadable here: https://genocideeducation.org/teaching_guides/iwitness-photo-activity/ Please be aware that these stories are of a graphic, sensitive nature. The teacher should read them ahead of time to insure this reading is appropriate for their class. 3. Teacher displays content from Slide 1 (teacher can use the image or text to create his/her own slides), Hitler’s Quote, and asks a student to read it out loud.
