  • Common Weeds That Can Interfere with Establishment, Sustainability, and Aesthetics of Wildflower Plantings
Common Weeds That Can Interfere with Establishment, Sustainability, and Aesthetics of Wildflower Plantings Potential sites for wildflowers should be not be considered when the occurrence of any weeds listed below is anything but very sparse.1, 2 These weeds will substantially reduce the likelihood of an aesthetically pleasing planting, or its establishment or sustainability. For example, tall weeds like dogfennel and ragweed can easily grow through a dense stand of shorter wildflowers like black-eyed susan or tickseed and make the planting look unsightly. Weeds like Florida betony or Mexican clover will hinder establishment as well as re-seeding because these weeds can form a dense groundcover that is difficult to eradicate. Vines and vine-like plants can affect aesthetics when they grow up through the wildflowers and spread out over the canopy of wildflowers. COMMON NAME SCIENTIFIC NAME Dogfennel Eupatorium capillifolium Fiddlers Spurge Poinsettia heterophylla Florida Betony Stachys floridana Horseweed, Marestail Conyza canadensis Mexican Clover, Mexican Tea Richardia spp. Nutsedges: Yellow and Purple Cyperus esculentus / Cyperus rotundus Ragweed: Common Ambrosia artemisiifolia Ragweed: Giant Ambrosia trifida Torpedograss Panicum repens Tropical Bushmint Cantinoa mutabilis (Hyptis mutabilis) Vaseygrass Paspalum urvillei Vine and Vine-Like Plants Dewberry Rubus spp. Greenbrier Smilax spp. In cases where these weeds are very sparse, and the site is otherwise suitable for wildflowers, eradicate these weeds during site preparation. And be vigilant thereafter; as with all weeds, these are most effectively controlled while they are young and are not flowering. Starting on page 2, details about each species is provided, including links to information and photos to aid in identification and management of these weeds.

These talented, creative and devoted teens led us in traditional and contemporary prayers, and also spoke about the meaning they find in being Jewish. While it didn’t come as a surprise, I was nonetheless tremendously proud and moved by their eloquence and the depth of their ideas and thoughts. Earlier that week when I considered my message to them I was wondering if the world that they live in is better than ours, their parents, when we were their age. On one hand they have all the knowledge and entertainment at the tips of their fingers, and they have dozens of ways to connect with their friends wherever they are. But on the other hand, they have no th recollection of living in a safer world, the one before September 11 , Al Qaeda and ISIS. While I couldn’t find an answer to the question of which world is better, I was bothered even more by the realization that we didn’t keep our promises to them, in particular the pledge of “never again.” After the crimes of the Holocaust became internationally known, the world vowed it would never happen again. But history since 1945 has shown that the world stood idly by, again and again, as genocide unfolded in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur to list a few.

FLORIDA HAZARDOUS WEATHER DAY-BY-DAY Bartlett C. Hagemeyer JoAnn S. Carney National Weather Service Office Melbourne. Florida November 1995 National Weather Service Southern Region Headquarters Fort Worth, Texas FLORIDA HAZARDOUS WEATHER BY DAY (to 1994) Bartlett C. Hagemeyer JoAnn S. Carney National Weather Service Office Melbourne, Florida 32935 1. Introduction An extensive search of weather records and publications was undertaken to document the occurrence of hazardous weather elements in Florida. The hazardous weather events were then organized with the goal of having at least one event for every day of the year - in other words - a Florida hazardous weather calendar. The authors felt this was a method for a variety of users to better understand, and put into perspective, all the hazardous weather elements Florida is subject to. Initially, brief descriptions of every event that caused a weather-related fatality were included, and any other hazardous weather events that caused significant injuries or property damage, or that was of an unusual nature. Most days of the year were covered in this fashion. To have an event for each day, events that did not cause injury or serious property damage were included on some days. Many days had several major events and several days had only one minor event. In the interest of brevity not all non-fatal events could be included on days with multiple occurrences. There are literally hundreds of minor events that are not included in this document. The authors attempted to include the most significant events. This document concerns short-term hazardous weather events ranging in time from several minutes to several days.
