Lying diagonally 24˚ N and 37˚ N latitudes and 61˚ E and 75˚ E longitudes, and covering an area of 87.98 million hectares. Topographically, the country has a continuous massive mountainous tract in the north, the west and south-west and large fertile plain, the Indus plain. The northern mountain system, comprising the Karakoram, the Himalays, and the Hindu-Kush, has enormous mass of snow and glaciers and 100 peaks of over 5400m in elevation. From Arabian Sea to the second highest peak in the world, K-2 (8,563m), it is the greatest change in elevation within any sovereign state on earth. More than 80% of the country is arid or semiarid. Due to this extensive aridity, the natural forest area is very small (about 5% of the total area) Pakistan’s Ecological Zones WWF- Global 200 Ecoregions Pakistan has five diverse and representative ecoregions included in Global 200 Ecoregions, identified by WWF. That are: The North Arabian Sea The Indus Ecoregion Rann of Kutch Tibetan plateau Western Himalayan Temperate Forests BIODIVERSITY OF PAKISTAN Biodiversity of Pakistan is blend of Palaearctic, Indo-Malayan and Ethiopian forms. Species belonging to Palaearctic realm occur in the Himalayan and Balochistan uplands; those belonging to Indo-Malayan realm occur in the Indus plains including Thar Desert and the Himalayan foothills. -

Five key gaps are addressed here. nderstanding India's vulnerability: Using earthquake science to enhance Udisaster preparedness Every year, thousands flock to Kashmir, in India and Pakistan to marvel at her spectacular scenery and majestic mountain ranges. However, the reality of our location and mountainous surroundings is an inherent threat of devastating earthquakes. In addition to accepting earthquakes as a South Asian reality, we as humanitarian respondents as well as risk reduction specialists must now look to science to enhance disaster risk mitigation and preparedness.The humanitarian communalities know little about what scientific communities have discovered and what could be used to mitigate risk of earthquakes. Similarly, scientific communities need to know how to put scientific knowledge in mitigation perspective from the point of view of non-scientific communities. How do we bridge this gap? We at AIDMI acknowledged this gap, and from the overlapping questions, we selected four key areas relevant to Kashmir and South Asia and discussed them in this issue. EARTHQUAKES, TORNADOES AND STORMS WATER Earthquakes along the Indus Delta and Baluchistan Coast. Coastal area of Sindh is in active seismic zone as shown in the Maps No.26 and 27. There is geological fault from Ahmedabad and Bhuj and Ormara along Makran coast and another geological fault from Ormara to Gulistan about 80 kms west of Quetta to Jalalabad and then turning eastwards under Himalayan foot hills through Kohistan towards Haryana in India and beyond. It is called Karakoram fault. Another one is located Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kohistan and Swat district. The 2005 earthquake was more intensive than 1974 earthquake, which had created havoc in Pattan, Duba, Palas and other villages. The first causes earthquakes along the northern Gujarat, Kutch, Rann of Kutch and affects Sindh coast and Karachi. In 1945 earthquake with epicentre in Makran between Pasni and Gawadar, Karachi also got shocks and some islands along Baluchistan coast disappeared and new ones emerged. The 2003 earthquake destroyed many houses in Ahmedabad, destroyed almost the whole town of Bhuj and affected coastal area of Sindh including damage to some buildings in Nagar Parker, Islamkot, Mithi, Diplo and Badin and bridges on roads south of Badin, though figures of such damage have not been published. The 1819 earthquake is well recorded and survey of Sindh Coast by Carless in 1817 and again in 1837 showed lot of changes in the various branches of the Indus. Besides these Sindhri a coastal town on the eastern branch of the Indus called Puran leading to Lakhpat on Koree Creek, submerged about 6 meters below the water in the Rann of Kutch and probably Rann of Kutch got disconnected with sea due to rise of its western edge close to and turned into inland lake. -

Unequal economic development in these southern provinces creates regional disparities. These regional disparities enhance significant political and social issues like rural poverty and uneven economic growth. During the last several decades these provinces have been facing increasing problems of regional inequalities in economic development. Hence it is necessary to investigate the problem areas with poor use of resources by advance statistical tech- niques like Principal Component Analysis. The results will pin point those areas where development activity and planning can be directed towards improving economic infrastructure and prosperity of the people. The broad objective of economic development is to balance the inherent land resources and optimization of resource use towards achievements of produc- tivity over a long period. This study focuses on morphological changes along the ~320-km-long Sindh coastline of Pakistan over past three decades. In this study, the Landsat images from 1989 to 2018 at an interval of 10 years are used to analyze the state of coastline erosion. For this purpose, well-known statistical approaches such as end point rate (EPR), least median of squares (LMS), and linear regression rate (LRR) are used to calculate the rates of coastline change. We analyze the erosion trend along with the underlying controlling variables of coastal change. Results show that most areas along the coastline have experienced noteworthy erosion during the study period. It is found that Karachi coastline experienced 2.43 0.45 m/yr of erosion and ± 8.34 0.45 m/yr of accretion, while erosion on the western and eastern sides of Indus River reached ± 12.5 0.55 and 19.96 0.65 m/yr on average, respectively. -

Balochistan. 5,000 ha. 25°07'N 063°52'E. An uninhabitated island about six km in length, some 25 km south of the desert coast of Balochistan. It is the only significant offshore island along the north coast of the Arabian Sea, and as such maintains the genetic and ecological diversity of the area. The endangered Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and possibly the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbracata) nest on the beach at the foot of cliffs, and it is a very important area for endemic reptiles such as the viper Echis carinatus astoli. The island is said to have an aura of mystery and is venerated by Hindus; there are architectural remains of an ancient temple to the Hindu goddess Kali Devi, as well as a prayer yard constructed for a Muslim saint associated with oceans. It serves as a base for fishermen between September and May, but is unfrequented during the period of rough seas and high tides. The Thar Desert, seventh largest desert in the world, harbors several species that have adapted themselves to survive in the harsh desert conditions. The floral diversity includes 682 species (63 introduced species), belonging to 352 genera and 87 families. The degree of endemism of plant species in the Thar Desert is 6.4 percent, which is relatively higher than the degree of endemism in the world famous Sahara desert. The faunal diversity represents 755 invertebrate and 440 vertebrate species, including 140 bird and 41 mammalian species and the only known population of the Asiatic wild ass. It is highlighted that sustainable use and management of this biodiversity is necessary to support human and livestock needs besides conservation. The strategy should be such that it is supported by public. Abstract The present investigation reveals the diversity of bacteria, fungus and archaea along the different regions of Kutch area, Gujarat, India. The samples were collected from 3 selected site of Kutch area whose temperature was between 37 - 41°C, pH 8.5, EC 1480 µs, Salinity 9.01 and 1.85 ppm TDS. 52 bacterial, 17 extreme halophilic archaea and 2 halophilic fungus strains were isolated, among these all bacterial strains were selected for further study like enzyme productivity and anti-microbial activity because the main aim of research was to isolate organism which have multiple applications. Fifteen strains produced four or more than four enzymes which have industrial application (amylase, protease, cellulose, lipase, and chitinase) and one strain of Micrococcus showed antimicrobial activity against all test cultures.
