IRIS VERMILLION, MEZZO-SOPRANO In February 2008 the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung wrote on the occasion of Iris Vermil-lions’s debut in the title part of Schoeck’s PENTHESILEA in Dresden: “the way Iris Vermillion, the truly disturbing Penthesilea in this production …., portrayed the suicidal end of the heroine, saved the opening night at Dresden’s Semperoper”. The “Neue Zuericher Zeitung” claimed that “the gruesome effect of this ending must be credited mainly to Iris Vermillion, who after the first sung notes makes plausible why this role suites her so perfectly”. For her stunning interpretation of this role Iris Vermillion won the coveted German Theater award “Der Faust” in November 2008 Iris Vermillion rose to international fame by singing Dorabella and Cherubino under the baton of Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Amsterdam as well as Clairon in Strauss’ CAPRICCIO in a production of Johannes Schaaf at Salzburg Festival under the baton of Horst Stein. Other important roles in those ealier years also include Sesto/LA CLEMENZIA DI TITO and Octa- vian/DER ROSENKAVALIER In recent years, she has been appearing regularly on the stages of some of the foremost Eu-ropean Opera companies such as the Deutsche Staatsoper unter den Linden and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, the Semperoper in Dresden and the Teatro alla Scala, adding more dramatic roles to her repertory including Composer/ARIADNE AUF NAXOS as well as Countess Geschwitz/LULU, Fricka/RING DES NIBELUNGEN, Wal- traute/GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG and Adriano/ RIENZI. Important debuts of the last seasons were Idamantes in the Strauss-Wallerstein version of Mozart’s IDOMENEO with Dresden's Semperoper and with Salzburg Festival 2006, Brangäne/TRISTAN UND ISOLDE in Bonn under Marc Nordic Artists Management / Denmark VAT number: DK29514143 http://nordicartistsmanagement.com Soustrot, in Dresden and in Paris under Kurt Masur, Venus/TANNHÄUSER in Dresden and Cologne and new productions of Schulhoff’s DIE FLAMMEN at the Theater an der Wien and her first Herodias/SALOME with Munich’s State Opera and with the Teatro alla Scala. Her debut as Hexe in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL in Dresden became a stunning success with audiences and critics alike and a DVD from this production has been released recently. Highlights of the 2008-2009 season include Schoeck’s PENTHESILEA and Humperdinck’s HANSEL AND GRETEL in Dresden, TRISTAN AND ISOLDE with the Teatro Maestranza in Seville, Mahler’s Klagendes Lied with the Philadelphia Orchestra, songs by Schubert under Sir Neville Marriner in Torino and concerts and recitals in Hamburg, Berne, Barcelona, Zaragoza, Paris and Copenhagen. Iris Vermillion has always been careful never to neglect her expansive concert and recital repertory and to keep enough time in her calendar free for her appearances with the most famous conductors and orchestras and with works that range from ancient music up to the 20th century. She has especially made a name for her interpretation of Gustav Mahler’s symphonies and song cycles. The artist has sung under the direction of renowned conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Gerd Albrecht, Semyon Bychkov, Christian Thielemann, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnány, Vladimir Fedosejev, Michael Gielen, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, René Jacobs, Kent Nagano, Armin Jordan, Philippe Jordan, Marek Janowski, Kurt Masur, Georges Prêtre, Helmuth Rilling, Donnald Runnicles, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Sir George Solti und Marcello Viotti. She has sung Bruckner’s TE DEUM with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under Christian Thielemann, Bach’s MAGNIFICAT under Helmuth Rilling at Vienna’s Musikverein, the world premiere of Jean-Luc Darbelley’s REQUIEM in Leipzig under Fabio Luisi, Mahler's LIED VON DER ERDE in St. Gallen, Berne and at the Gulbenkian Sesto/LA CLEMENZA DI Nordic Artists Management / Denmark VAT number: DK29514143 http://nordicartistsmanagement.com TITO at the Festival de Canarias 2006, Brittens PHAEDRA in Madrid and Barcelona, Berlioz’ LA DAMNATION DE FAUST in Seville and with Grafenegg Festival, Bartok’s BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE at Vienna’s Musikverein and recitals at the Tonhalle Dusseldorf, at Dresden’s Semperoper and the Musikverein in Vienna. Iris Vermillion has made well over thirty highly acclaimed recordings including works by Bee-thoven, Bellini, Donizetti, Goldschmidt, Graun, Liszt, Loewe, Mahler, Mozart, Pfitzner, Schul-hoff, Schumann, R. Strauss, Ullmann, Wagner and Zemlinsky for Labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Decca, Philips, Harmonia Mundi, CPO, Erato and BMG.
