Walk through city streets that are well over 2,000 years old and visit some of the most ancient sites in the entire world which includes; The Mt. of Beatitudes, site of the Sermon on the Mount, site of the Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, to Capernaum, crossing the River Jordan to visit the Golan. Stroll through the winding alleys of the artist’s quarter in the ancient port city of Jaffa. Continue along the Mediterranean coast to the ruins of the ancient Roman capital, Caesarea, built by Herod the Great in 22 B.C. Visit the Roman Theatre, Aqueduct and Fortress. Stop at Haifa; enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the amazing Baha'i Shrine and Gardens on Mount Carmel. Travel the Valley of Armageddon to the excavation site of Tel Megiddo. A stop in the biblical city of Bethlehem, spread along the Judean hills, allows for a visit to the Church of the Nativity, the birthplace of Jesus and the first church ever built. Drive to Mount of Olives for a breathtaking panoramic view the amazing city of Jerusalem and the surrounding area. For financial institutions to participate successfully in tourism project, it requires financial support from financial institutions (banks) to showcase, promote, uplift and to financially-support the nourished culture, norms and values the people cherish; and to ensure that the beliefs of the people are not eroded by foreign culture and above all, to stimulate the economy. The primary source of data is adopted via structured questionnaire. Statistically, the estimated parameter are mean, standard deviation, and standard error (ẟ√N). The responses of the respondents gathered via the questionnaire was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

  • The Politics of Culture in a Diaspora Community: a Case Study of Caretta, an African Brazilian Carnival in Lagos, Nigeria
    June 2007 Newsletter The Politics of Culture and Diaspora Settlement in Lagos: Ethnographic Presentation of the African Brazilian Fanti/Caretta Carnival By Alaba Simpson* This paper offers an ethnographic presentation of the politics of Diaspora settlement in Lagos, using the popular Fanti/Caretta carnival as point of assessment. It notes that the seemingly entertaining cultural aspect of the people of Lagos as highlighted by the Fanti/Caretta carnival goes beyond mere aesthetic appeal and appreciation that largely characterizes the subject. It emphasizes some cultural and remarkable features that characterized the years which immediately followed the abolition of the slave trade and the ensuing return to Nigeria of some librated slave descendants from Brazil, where a significant proportion of the slaves from the West coast of Africa had been transported. The people, who at their return, were settled in the Campos area of the Lagos Island, had brought with them some aspects of Portuguese culture from Brazil, and largely incorporated these into the existing cultural patterns in Lagos, among which was the Caretta (later known as Fanti). The returnees were largely believed to have experienced exclusion as they tried to integrate with the culture of the larger Lagos Island. The strains that were involved in the adjustment procedures motivated the Diaspora community to seek solace in the performance of the Caretta carnival which was a socio-cultural activity that was practiced by them during the time of slavery in Brazil. The carnival has metamorphosed over the years into a widely accepted 1 cultural feature of the people of Lagos. Through the present ethnographic report the carnival is being presented as a profitable window through which specific aspects of the earlier indigenes versus African Brazilian inter-group relational activities in the area can be gauged.

January, 2011 This Thesis is ca. 79, 929 words. 1 ABSTRACT Different disciplines have explored the history of Islām in Yoruba land which started in the early 18th century. However, the impact of religious syncretism has not been systematically studied. Therefore, this thesis examines the extent of the involvement of Yoruba Muslims in syncretic beliefs and practices in Nigeria using the Lagos State as a case study, with a view to bringing out the impact of Tawḥīd on them. In agreement with previous research, this study notes that there is a prevalence of religious syncretism among many Yoruba Muslims, but it principally argues that its impact affects many of them negatively. If continuous awareness campaign could be carried out, the phenomenon will be reduced. A triangulated method was used to carry out this study. The findings of this thesis indicated reappraisal of the problem associated with many Yoruba Muslims’ persistence in syncretism and its implications on their faith (īman). While this study appreciates the attempts of some scholars to eradicate this endemic problem, it reveals that Tawḥīd is not yet inculcated into many Yoruba Muslims within the Yoruba religio- cultural context. Therefore, a concerted effort is necessary among all stakeholders in the task of promoting the effective instillation of practical Tawḥīd.

The study evaluates the Lagos Black Heritage Festival as a means of promoting the culture and socio-economic advancement of Lagos State. The study was based on the 2015 edition which was the 6th time the festival is been held and coincidentally the valedictory version held in honour of the initiator of the festival. The study adopted survey method with the use of questionnaires, key informant interview and participant observation for data collection. A total of 400 questionnaires were administered physically to the respondents but only 387 questionnaires were returned valid. Data gathered were analyzed and presented with the use of simple percentages, charts and proximity matrix. Findings of the study revealed that about 80% of the participants at the festival have positive attitude towards it and 78.4% appreciates the culture of the host community. 84% of the participants had positive experiences during the festival and 71.3% were satisfied with the events and indicated that they would like to come for the festival another time.

Woro Agere festival is a socio-cultural festival attracting people of all affiliation. Woro agree festival thus shares similar attribute with Egungun festivals and others in terms of the way they invoke the spirit for the peaceful conduct in the society. Despite the influence of westernization, modernity and religion, cultural festivals are apparently given prominent attention by the people of Ogun state. Many of the people are both Muslims and Christians, but cultural identities remain pivotal among the people of western Nigeria. Culture is highly valued in the society. It is also regarded as their identity, memory, pride, achievement and their contribution to world civilization. In fact, among the Ijebu, festivals have been given more attention so much so that the celebrations of most of these festivals are announced over print and electronic media. Agere festival is a very prominent institution. It is an institution which performs political, judiciary and religious functions among the natives. It is used for social purposes, and to preserve order in private and community life. Hence, it is a major component of the indigenous Ijebu Igbo culture.
