Based on morphological taxonomic key characters 48 diaptomid species belonging to 13 genera were reported from India. Taxonomic discrimination of many species of these genera is difficult due to their high morphological similarities and minute differences in key characters. In the present study two species of the genus, Neodiaptomus, N. meggiti and N. schmackeri from Andaman Islands were examined based on morphological and molecular characters which showed low variation in morphology and differences in their distributions. The morphological taxonomy of Copepoda with genetic analysis has shown complementing values in understanding the genetic variation and phylogeny of the contemporary populations. In this study, a molecular phylogenetic analysis of N. meggiti and N. schmackeri is performed on the basis of mitochondrial Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The study of small water bodies contributes to understanding aquatic organisms’ adaptation to sharp fluctuations in external factors. Studies of biological com- munities’ response to fluctuations in external factors can be used for bioindication of the ecological state of small water bodies. We sequenced a mitochondrial (COI) and the nuclear ribosome 18S operon (ITS) to reconstruct the phylogenetic trees by using a Bayesian and maximum likelihood (ML) approach with 161 individuals. The phylogeny tree revealed five clades and two geographically separated subclades in both S. ferus and P. tunguidus. We found, for the first time, that the hybrid specimens occurred in Diaptomidae, but low hybridization suggested effective barriers to hybridization and introgression. One hypothesis, that hybridization is recent and was initiated by invasions via canals built between the Yangtze and Pearl rivers c. 2000 years ago, is not supported by K2P genetic distances of the order of 20%. Furthermore, COI analysis of different populations of S. ferus and P. tunguidus revealed two geographical clades in each species, with genetic distances commensurate with cryptic speciation. -

Kovalevsky Institute of Biology of the South- ern Seas of RAS, Sevastopol, Russia ABSTRACT Calanoid copepod Peudodiaptomus marinus Sato, 1913 was first recorded in Sevastopol Bay in the northern Black Sea in September 2016. We performed regular observations of this new invasive species between October 2016 and December 2018. We conducted bi-weekly plankton sampling at three stations located within or adjacent to Sevastopol Bay. This is the first paper to combine (i) a detailed morphological study, (ii) molecular genetic analysis, and (iii) an investigation of P. marinus seasonal dynamics and interan- nual abundance variability in the coastal Black Sea. Our morphological research showed similarities between Pseudodiaptomus specimens and existing P. marinus illustrations and descriptions. Our morphological analysis results were confirmed using molecular genetic studies. Based on the genetic variability of ITS2 and cytb, we found that all investigated specimens from Sevastopol Bay belonged to P. marinus. Investigations of P. marinus seasonal and interannual abundance variability showed the same seasonal patterns throughout the studied period, with a higher seasonal abundance from October to November and one pronounced density peak in autumn. Two species of neotropical cyclopoid copepod crustaceans, Mesocyclops longisetus curvatus and Mesocyclops venezolanus, were collected from a pond at Shingle Point,Yukon Territory, Canada,in September 1974. This is the first record of M. longisetus curvatus north of the southern United States and the first record of M. venezolanus north of Honduras. We provide amplified descriptions of both species. Four additional congeners, M. americanus, M. edm, M. reidae, and M. ruttneri, are now known from the continental U.S. and Canada. We provide a key to the identification of the six species.We hypothesize that the specimens M.of longisemcurvatuF and M. venezolanus may have been passively transported to Shingle Point by migrant shorebirds. ORIGINAL ARTICLE Allodiaptomus nongensis, a new diaptomid copepod (Copepoda: Calanoida) from a tributary of the Mekong River, with notes on its consumption by local people in Central Laos La-orsri SANOAMUANG,1,2* Santi WATIROYRAM3 1Applied Taxonomic Research Center, Faculty of Science, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen 40002; 2International College, Khon Kaen University, Khon Kaen 40002; 3Division of Biology, Faculty of Science, Nakhon Phanom University, Nakhon Phanom 48000, Thailand ABSTRACT A new calanoid copepod, Allodiaptomus nongensis n. sp., is herein described based on samples collected from the Xe Lanong River (a tributary of the Mekong River), and 13 other localities in Central Laos. This is the sixth species of the genus Allodiaptomus Kiefer, 1936. The other five members in the genus were recorded from India, South China, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The features that stand out in the new species are in the male: the right caudal ramus has a large, biacuminate, conical process proximally, and the Exp-2 of the right P5 has a hook-shaped principal spine proximally. The new species is abundant in both temporary and permanent waters, but is restricted to Savannakhet Province. This Laotian endemic copepod is referred to by local people as “Pa Khayong”, which means tiny fish. Since high densities of this copepod can be found in the dry season (December until May), several man-made copepod traps are placed by local people along the river banks in Muang Nong District. Interestingly, large concentrations of individuals (body length: ~1 mm) belonging to the new species are harvested and consumed by these villagers.only Additional information about this species and the copepod fisheries by local people in this area is provided herein. -

Svetlichny, L., Samchyshyna, L. — Sinodiaptomus sarsi (Rylov, 1923) was found for the second time in Ukraine, in three artifi cial lakes located in the park Nyvki, Kyiv City, aft er its fi rst record in the Carpathian Mountain region near Slovakian border in 2016. Our morphological study showed the similarity between the specimens of S. sarsi found in Kyiv with the existing illustrations and descriptions of the species. Th e most likely route of invasion is through human unwary release. Th e morphology of the new population is here described. We examined the effects of S. pallidus establishment on the zooplankton community of a natural lake, Lake Kereta, where it was first recorded in late-2008, coincident with releases of domestically cultured grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). Although not present in any of our samples prior to August 2008, S. pallidus was found in all samples collected in the subsequent five years. ANOSIM indicated zooplankton community composition significantly differed between samples collected before and after S.
