Ucpori Student Guide for Exchange 1 WELCOME TO STUDY IN UNIVERSITY CONSORTIUM OF PORI! Congratulations on your nomination for exchange period in University Consortium of Pori (UCPori). We're delighted to have you as a part of our unique multidisciplinary science and art community. This brochure includes valuable information about studying and living in Pori and making the most of your time here. University Consortium of Pori is a multidisciplinary community of four universities, conducting scientific research and education. Pori Interdisciplinary Exchange Program in Technology, Business and Culture offers a concise and versatile curriculum with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary dialogue. The receiving universities are Tampere University of Technology, Pori Department and University of Turku, Turku School of Economics, Pori Unit. Other Universities in UCPori are University of Tampere and Aalto University. The University Consortium operates in a unique studying environment in a renovated textile mill (Pori Cotton Factory) in the center of Pori, on the north bank of the river Kokemäenjoki. The factory was built during 1898-1900 and burnt partly to ground in 1981. The building was renovated for university purposes in 1999. Finland and Pori are excellent destinations for exchange students. Finland has a particular charm that lies in the combination of world-class education, research, technology, design and beautiful, unspoiled nature. Finland is known as a comfortable and safe living environment, as confirmed by quality-of-life studies, and has been ranked among the world’s top countries for higher education. Located on the west coast of Finland, Pori is home to 83,000 people. The total student population at the University Consortium of Pori and the universities of applied sciences in the region is around 10,000. Local industries offer students exciting employment opportunities, for example, in the fields of maritime technology, energy, mechanical engineering and game technology. Pori is a vibrant city full of festivals and alternative culture where events and activities liven up the atmosphere all year long. Pori offers a diverse variety of land and water sports. Your exchange study period at UCPori will start with an orientation days in late August or in the beginning of January. Please note that orientation is compulsory for all new international students. During the orientation you will, for example, register as a student, get information on how to sign up for courses and meet your fellow students. There are four universities that operate in the university consortium: Aalto University, Pori Urban Platform of Aalto University, PUPA Tampere University of Technology University of Tampere University of Turku Turku School of Economics Cultural Production and Landscape Studies Centre for Maritime Studies Faculty of Medicine, Teaching Health Center There are four degree programs that lead to an academic degree in Pori: Master of Science (MSc) Master of Social Science (MSSc) Bachelor and Master of Business Administration (BBA, MBA) Bachelor and Master of Arts in Humanities (BA, MA) Postgraduate studies are provided to doctorate level. Multidisciplinary research is done in five fields: Digital society Energy and environment Gamification Knowledge-intensive organizations in networks Social cohesion Did you know? University consortia are network organizations, where the academic activities in a certain area have been gathered under one roof. Besides Pori there are five university consortia: in Kajaani, Kokkola, Lahti, Mikkeli and Seinäjoki. The university consortia are a part of the Finnish university institution and the higher education system. The units in the university consortia follow the rules and regulations of their parent universities. 5 THE UNIVERSITIES IN UCPORI Tampere University of Technology, Pori Unit The Pori Unit of Tampere University of Technology offers education leading to Master´s Degree in Management and Information Technology. Also post‐graduate studies leading to the degrees of Doctor of Science in Technology and Doctor of Philosophy can be completed. The major subjects are Industrial Engineering and Management and Software Engineering. As minor subjects degree students can choose Software Business, Data Analytics in Management and Information System Technologies. Post-graduate studies can also be completed. The major subjects are Accounting and Finance, Marketing and Management and Organization. As minor subjects you can choose any of the major subjects or Business Law, Doing business in a Global and Multicultural Environment or Foresight and Sustainable Development. The key focus areas include Business Competence and Entrepreneurship. Strong competition between airlines has provided Europe’s air travellers with an increased choice of airline, airport, price and service. The Airline Passenger Service Commitment contains non- legally binding commitments to deliver defined standards of service to air travellers. The code covers 14 areas: services provided before travel, during travel and after travel. It describes the level of service air travellers may expect consistently from signatory airlines. It will enable air travellers to make a more informed choice of airline when planning their travel arrangements. The airlines that are signatories to this Airline Passenger Service Commitment will continue to compete vigorously to meet the needs of customers by offering different products and different levels of customer service. They will endeavour to achieve the standards set out in this Airline Passenger Service Commitment on the most consistent basis possible. Signatory airlines will each develop their own individual service plans incorporating the Airline Passenger Service Commitment. Signatory airlines will establish staff training programmes and introduce changes to their computer systems to better implement the Airline Passenger Service Commitment. During this implementation period, some elements of the Airline Passenger Service Commitment may not be delivered by every airline. Signatory airlines agree to: 1. Introduction s the factors accounting for the costs of weather-related disasters (specifically, floods and storms) in recent decades and the implications of understanding these for both research and policy are considered in the Finnish context. The climatology of the pertinent weather phenomena are discussed also with some A outlook to the scenarios. Here some possible future shifts in both flood and storm types causing damages and losses are pointed out. In addition some policy issues are discussed as this seems to be another pertinent point. 2. Factors in weather-related disasters 2.1 Floods Since 1960 (Puupponen, 2006) in terms of house damage costs the three most severe flood episodes in Finland have occurred as follows. Spring 1966 – Southern Finland: This spring flood has been since 1969 the highest flood in the rivers of Southern Finland. The water equivalent of the snow at the beginning of April was still widely 200 – 250 mm which was roughly double compared with the normal value and in fact a record value. The melting of the snow was postponed to a late time point around 1 May. Consequently the recurrence value of the observed flood flows exceeded in several drainage basins 100 years in terms of a Gumbel distribution estimate. No exact damage data are available, but in relation to later damage inventories the probable cost level has been of the order of 10 million euros.

  • A Fugitive Success That Finland Is Quickly Becoming a Victim of Its Own Success
    Professor Charles Sabel from Columbia Law School and Professor AnnaLee Saxenian from UC Berkeley argue in their book A Fugitive Success that Finland is quickly becoming a victim of its own success. In recent decades Finnish firms in the forest products and telecommunications industries have become world leaders. But the kind of discipline that made this success possible, and the public policies that furthered it, is unlikely to secure it in the future. Efficiency improvements and incremental A Fugitive Success innovations along the current business trajectory will gradually lead these industries into a dead-end unless they use innovation as a vehicle for transforming themselves into new higher value businesses. Saxenian and Sabel raise some serious concerns about the readiness of these industries, and the Finnish innovation system as a whole, for the needed transformation.
