DECEMBER 2018 travelscapesonline.com 27 SPECIAL FEATURE TravelScapes

Sandeep Dwivedi COO, InterGlobe Technology Quotient (ITQ) By embracing technology, the aviation sector in India has undergone various changes in recent years. Airlines, now, understand how their consumers’ behaviour is changing in the corporate and retail sectors. To stay ahead in the competition, airlines have and are still utilising the benefits of travel commerce platforms such as Travelport that enables them to increase revenues, reach out to numerous travel buyers and share their unique content with travel agencies, corporate travel buyers or developers. In addition to this, airlines leverage NDC (New Distribution Capability) to display their content through travel business organisations to attract potential travellers and even retain the existing ones. NDC enables the airlines to offer customised travel products and services to their target audience. Besides this, airlines also harness the selling of ancillary products and services, which adds up as a source of revenue for many airlines. The Indian aviation industry can be seen as a pool of untapped potential having tremendous growth opportunities. TRENDING TRENDS Artificial Intelligence or AI can be seen as the next ‘big thing’ in the Indian aviation industry. Although the technology is in early stages of its implementation, it would definitely go beyond this and present improved ways for airlines, OTAs and travel commerce businesses to optimise resources as well as enhance customer satisfaction and data security. Automated baggage check-in, facial recognition and customer queries and responses will be improved. The growing number of LCCs has made flights accessible to a vast majority of the Indian population. In FY18, domestic passenger traffic expanded y-o-y by 18.28 per cent and reached 243 million, which is expected to grow in the next two years. Owing to an unprecedented passenger growth, a secure and better facilitation is required at the airports. In line with this, the Civil Aviation Ministry has released ‘Digi Yatra’, biometric digital processing platform for the passengers, which is expected to be functional by February 2019. Lastly, to meet the growing air traffic demands, the Indian government is planning to invest USD 1.83 billion for making new airports in addition to aviation navigation services by 2026.

Tewolde GebreMariam Group CEO, Ethiopian Airlines Airlines are still navigating the intricacies of determining how to deliver more differentiated passenger experiences. Global airlines increasingly pursue the notion of de-commoditising their products in order to create a strategic level of differentiation and the concept of creating new airline customer value propositions remains in its infancy. Understanding passenger preferences is a huge piece of the puzzle to be solved as travel providers work toward greater product distinction and personalisation. At the same time, passenger preference for the lowest price will always dictate a high level of commoditisation within the travel industry. No airline has yet achieved significant success in presenting a de-commoditised product to its various customer segments; it will be some time before all the necessary elements coalesce and airlines succeed at full product segmentation.

TRENDING TRENDS A number of leading global airlines have taken off on their ‘social’ flight and as social media takes precedence in the overall customer relationship management pie, airlines need to look at building a robust resource pool that can respond to customer queries, complaints, posts and tweets, round the clock. The Internet, represented by online travel agencies and websites in the airline business, is a powerful revenue generator for airlines. As indicated by market research data, almost 75 per cent of air tickets are bought online nowadays, playing an active role in Customer Relationship Management and revenue generation in the coming time. With the proliferation of channels, the data generated in each channel is multiplying by the minute. This huge pile of data is a goldmine that contains very crucial information on passenger profiles and preferences that can be leveraged by airlines to develop product offerings and effectively cross- or up-sell additional products or services. Some of the new strategies include tapping alternate revenue generating streams such as selling ancillary products and services across the value chain or stopping revenue leakage via the total revenue integrity route. Regulations and directives, related to finance and accounting, environment and consumer rights, on standardisation will continue to dominate the airline business environment.

Jagdish Bhojwani General Manager-India, SilkAir The aviation industry is booming and growing to serve the increase in passengers by providing them with the best travel experience. The increase in the number of passengers opting to travel by air is also quite evident. In the fast- growing industry, the expectations of travellers are continuously changing. It is becoming imperative that every airline stays up to date with the current trends. Competition has been increasing rapidly amongst the airlines, whether with size, with services or other aspects. Airlines are becoming more innovative, offering new designs and services in response to market needs and passenger expectations. For instance, last year, we introduced our All-Time Favourite menu, offering business class customers a specially curated selection of meals which they can pre-order for their flights. Additionally, with the growth of digitisation in the industry, airlines are making passengers’ travel experiences more technologically advanced, for example, in the booking process for tickets. We also expect to see a few upcoming trends that will be introduced by airlines, such as Self-Cleaning Seats, Cargo Hold Bunks and Playgrounds and in-flight VR. TRENDING TRENDS Airlines are increasingly focusing on ‘Premium Economy’. Passengers will soon be offered a choice to book a premium seat, which we expect will be especially popular on longer hauls. With Premium Economy, one is assured to have a more premium and comfortable travel experience. Also, airlines are introducing better in-flight cabin enhancements for passengers, such as support for laptops and connectivity options that will enable in-flight working. This trend sees airlines making hardware alterations, such as the number of USB ports available or the addition of a PED holder or bespoke soft material finishes. Moreover, we expect to see the implementation of biometric technology at airports impacting the passenger boarding process, giving passengers a faster, smoother and more convenient experience.

SPECIAL FEATURE TravelScapes

Sajid Khan Country Manager- India, Fiji Airways In the near future, the majority of the passengers are going to be the millennial and Gen-Y while the oldest millennial will be closing into their 40s and Gen-Y would have their oldest in the mid-20s. This range of age is the most productive period in anyone’s life and this mix bunch of potential passengers would be beneficial. This then obviously involves all the travel that comes with along. Seamless online booking and fulfilment process are two additional and prospective aspects to look forward to along with personalised packages and exclusive engagement via social media in addition to the rise of both production and demand of e-wallet apps.

TRENDING TRENDS More than trends in the near future, I feel it will be more to do with how airlines adapt to the expectations of the passengers. What is it that would be so different or would it remain the same? I would want to believe that the question can be best answered if we know who the passengers are going to be and what their demand is. Airlines might need to be able to create opportunities by innovating interiors of aircraft and airport activities to engage them through social media. This should get their attention and influence their decision. Ancillary revenue is already a growing trend with current airlines where things taken for granted by Gen-X are now chargeable. Virtual reality experiences will also be the new ad placement arenas for airlines. With the world becoming a global village for the Gen-Y, there isn’t much difference in likes and dislikes across the globe, which means it becomes easier for airlines to market uniformly across the world. Airlines’ alliances might also have to restructure and provide computability on online services among its members. Similar to a participatory FFP across the member airlines perhaps the alliance may now boast that all member airlines provide free Wi-Fi onboard. Whatever the trends come in the near future, it all would all be online.

Manvi Hooda Senior Manager & Practice Lead, CAPA - Centre for Aviation, India At the beginning of 2018, most airlines were optimistic and expected to see a profitable FY2019. However, in a little over six months, the sentiment shifted abruptly in response to a spike in oil prices to USD 80 per barrel and depreciation of the Rupee to over INR 70 against the USD. While costs are going up, excess capacity has put further downward pressure on yields, especially those of FSCs. The financial outlook for airlines has hence deteriorated dramatically from January 2018. Although LCCs are better placed than FSCs, a full-year loss cannot be ruled out for them at this stage. Airline loses in FY2019 projected to increase significantly. However, despite the challenges faced by the aviation sector, the overall macroeconomic conditions remain strong. The economy is expected to grow by about 7.5 per cent this year, with growth in the first quarter being particularly robust, at 8.2 per cent. With airlines continuing to offer low fares, demand for travel will be stimulated. Domestic traffic is expected to grow 18 to 20 per cent, this year while international is expected to witness 10 to 12 per cent growth and can accelerate to 12 to 15 per cent by FY2020. While airports continue to report strong growth, infrastructure constraint may be directly contributing to airline loses because of higher costs and network TRENDING TRENDS inefficiency. India’s airline market is dominated by LCC fleets with more than 70 per cent market share. With a lower cost base and rapid expansion, LCCs have dramatically changed market dynamics and Full Service Carriers (FSC) are now under tremendous pressure to offer competitive pricing (despite having a significantly higher cost structure) to cater to the price-sensitive market. Over the last few years, differences between the two models have blurred and the ‘hybrid’ model is becoming prevalent. Both LCC and FSC models are converging, with little product difference visible, especially in the economy class. For example, full-service airlines such as Vistara and Jet Airways have started unbundling fares by providing the option of buying meals on board while LCCs such as SpiceJet are providing options (e.g. SpiceMax) with some frills for a little fare premium versus no frills with lower fares. With little product difference to justify the fare premium to cover higher costs, the relevance of the FSC model is under increasing pressure on India’s domestic routes.

Rizwan Siddiqui Director- Sales (Asia), Air Astana Nowadays, aviaition is all about cost. If we analyse the evolution of low-cost carriers (LCCs) worldwide, who are eating up the market share of full service and charter airlines, it is mainly based on price advantage. This is mainly due to the no usage of the cost-intensive hub and spoke systems along with the usage of a unique type of aircraft fleet. Another reason why LCCs have competitive advantage lies is the fact that the price sensitiveness of passengers has increased irrespective of their disposable incomes. The market size, from 2006 until now and India’s passengers’ traffic grew by over 12 per cent, annually. Domestic growth is over 18 per cent and international growth is over 10 per cent, which will attract new airlines.

TRENDING TRENDS Strong demand is a current trend in middle-class demography of populace that will make a positive impact in demand for travel. India is expected to be the third largest aviation market by 2024 and therefore, higher rates of travelling can be forecast along with more passengers opting for flights. Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry’s opportunities would be higher, over time. Currently, MRO expenditure accounts for 13 to 15 per cent of the total revenues and the industry is expected to grow up to USD 1.45 billion (as per IATA estimates). Indian Government Policy Support by the Government of India has been encouraging private sector participation, including foreign investment of up to 49 per cent, which will allow new entrants in the market, eventually increasing opportunities for Indian passengers.

Confluence of faith and spirituality When we take the name of ‘Kumbh’, the mind drifts towards the calming image of Triveni sangam and the Kumbh Mela accompanied by chanting of mantras, holy dip and sacred melodies.
