Salt n Pepa (Live), Grandmaster Flash (Live), Roots Manuva (Live), Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Skream, Flying Lotus, Wiley, Ms Dynamite, DJ Rush and Nathan Fake (Live) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further top-notch acts roll-up for BLOC /// ALL 5 & 7 berth Self-Catering Apartments SOLD OUT /// Fancy Dress Theme Announced for Sunday /// ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "The UK is lucky to have popular festivals like Bloc Weekender, carrying the mantle of interesting electronic music. A tastemakers festival no doubt." Martina Connors, Warp Records "BLOC is an integral essential part of the UK festival circuit being braver, bolder and downright more 'ardcore than most of us out there!" Rob Da Bank: Bestival / BBC Radio 1 "A triumph.. imaginatively curated and skillfully managed.. the best alternative electronic festival in the UK" Mary-Anne Hobbs, BBC Radio 1 "The best RAVE ever" - DJ Magazine Eclecticism is a word bandied around music events far too regularly these days, but at BLOC we can hold our heads high, certain in the knowledge that come March 2010 we will have the most forward thinking and varied selection of performers in the country. Deep breaths, people… We have a huge third round of artists to announce, where world class acts sit with cutting-edge performers of the future. Bloc welcomes aboard a true superstar from over the pond - Mix Master Mike; named as one of the greatest DJs of all time by USA Today. With his new found love of hip-hop and his foray into scratching, Mike first got involved in the mobile DJ business playing house parties. After winning three consecutive DMC World Championships, it was rumored that Mix Master Mike was asked to retire from further competitions to Page 1 give someone else a chance! Mikes most high-profile work has been with hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, working on albums Hello Nasty (1998) and To The 5 Borough (2004), also appearing on The Sound of Science retrospective anthology. Mix Master Mike is now effectively the Beastie Boys' resident DJ. Add into the mix, Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison), an experimental multi-genre artist from California. Combining a pulsing hum of simply sick beats, the blissed-out soundtracks of outerspace computer vistas and a cartoonists sense of colour, you can see why everyone wants his tracks. As well as running his Brainfeeder label, which boasts a roster of forward-thinking beat artists, FlyLo has also landed at BLOC! Also joining the BLOC bandwagon as it rolls into Somerset we welcome aboard Joris Voorn, Deuce DJs feat: Marcel Dettmann & Shed, Omar-S, Subhead LIVE & Matt Whitehead LIVE (Cyantific). Omar-S is a modern day Detroit maverick - one of a new generation of producers putting his own unique slant on the citys venerable techno tradition. His raw and soulful sound owes as much to classic Chicago house as the moody synth work of Derrick May et al. This will be Omar-S's first ever UK festival appearance! As a deejay Joris Voorn has been spreading his wide range of techno since 1997. Besides doing his high energy live sets, releases have come thick and fast under Voorns Green label, named MPX_309'. The Dark Flower Magnolia Mix for Robert Babicz turned out to be 2009s summer anthem, a favourite of DJs like Sven Vath, Dubfire, Pete Tong and John Digweed. Shrugging off media attention adds to Subheads anonymity, while intense live-performances have built devoted followings worldwide for anyone seeking art on the right angle: Punk rock while pure Techno! Subheads embrace and strangulation of hard-edged technology falls into no category or school, tipping their hat to Hip-Hop, Breakbeat, Freestyle and Electro as well as Techno. For spotters of Vogel, Landstrumm, Si Begg and Captain Beefheart, Subhead deeply delivers scalding but quirky and pumping raw funk-powered Hip-Hop hi-hat battles. As part as Cyantific, Matt Whiteheads various hi-tec outings on Hospital Records quickly brought them massive acclaim and huge commercial success. Matts solo project takes years of studio experience and takes it in a new, funkier direction. Closer to electro, house and disco than his Cyantific output, this is sure to be the surprise hit of the festival. Fancy Dress Theme for Sunday Fancy dress theme for Sunday this year (which happens to be Mothering Sunday!): 'The Big Day'...Dearly beloved, think; brides, bridesmaids, grooms, pageboys, vicars, cake, confetti, wedding singers, big hats, tails and wedding rings. • A Comprehensive History of Techno and Finding God in the Music with Ellen Allien
Editorial A Comprehensive History of Techno and Finding God in the Music With Ellen Allien Kian McHugh | August 3, 2020 When my Zoom call with Ellen Allien connects, at last, I feel weeks of anticipation turn to uncontrollable excitement. My fingers, sweaty from nerves, and a poorly brewed Starbucks coffee, type out the instructions on how to get her audio configured. Ellen is lounging in her Ibiza flat where she has painted all of the walls completely black so that when the sun shines through her window, the room glows yellow. The first fully formed thought I could pencil down was that her posture seemed to denote a sincere attention to detail and confidence in comfort that most others lack. For the first 2 minutes of the call, we both instinctively laugh, muted, and unaware that our discussion of Techno would soon gravitate toward, and then find unexpected momentum in… a deep consideration of Techno, God, and religion. “Rap is where you rst heard it… If rap is more an American phenomenon, techno is where it all comes together in Europe as producers and musicians engage in a dialogue of dazzling speed.” – Jon Savage (English writer, broadcaster and music journalist). In Hanif Abdurraqib’s 2019 book, Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest, he so beautifully praises “the low end” of a track: “The feeling of something familiar that sits so deep in your chest that you have to hum it out … where the bass and the kick drums exist.” His point rings true across all music that is heavily percussion driven.

I’ve never known any other type of music to get so misconstrued by its name.’ (Rob Playford, 1996) Of all of the dance music genres, none has been surrounded with quite so much controversy over its name than jungle. No sooner had it been coined than exponents of the scene were up in arms about the racist implications. Arguments raged over who rst used the term and many others simply refused to acknowledge the existence of the moniker. It wasn’t the rst time that jungle had been used as a way to describe a sound. Kool and the Gang had called their 1973 funk standard Jungle Boogie, while an instrumental version with an overdubbed ute part and additional percussion instruments was titled Jungle Jazz. The song ends with a Tarzan yell and features grunting, panting and scatting throughout.

  • Detroit: Techno City 27 July – 25 September 2016 ICA Fox Reading Room Preview 26 July
ICA Press release: 26 May 2016 Detroit: Techno City 27 July – 25 September 2016 ICA Fox Reading Room Preview 26 July Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit (1988). Courtesy Neil Rushton and 10 Records LTD The next ICA Fox Reading Room exhibition will present a studied look at the evolution and subsequent dispersion of ‘Detroit Techno music’. This term, coined in the late 1980s, reflects the musical and social influences that informed early experiments merging sounds of synth-pop and disco with funk to create this distinct music genre. For the first time in the UK, a dedicated exhibition will chart a timeline of ‘Detroit Techno music’ from its 1970s origins, continuing through to the early 1990s. The genre’s origins begin in the disco parties of Ken Collier with influence from local radio stations and DJs, such as Electrifying Mojo and The Wizard (aka Jeff Mills). The ICA’s exhibition explores how a generation was inspired to create a new kind of electronic music that was evidenced in the formative UK compilation: Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit. Using inexpensive analogue technology, such as the Roland TR 808 and 909, DJs and producers including Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, formed this seminal music genre. Although the music failed to gain mainstream audiences in the U.S, it became a phenomenon in Europe. This success established Detroit Techno, as a new strand of music which absorbed exterior European tastes and influences. This introduced a second wave of DJs and producers to the sound including Carl Craig, Richie Hawtin and Kenny Larkin.

  • House, Techno & the Origins of Electronic Dance Music
HOUSE, TECHNO & THE ORIGINS OF ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC 1 EARLY HOUSE AND TECHNO ARTISTS THE STUDIO AS AN INSTRUMENT TECHNOLOGY AND ‘MISTAKES’ OR ‘MISUSE’ 2 How did we get here? disco electro-pop soul / funk Garage - NYC House - Chicago Techno - Detroit Paradise Garage - NYC Larry Levan (and Frankie Knuckles) Chicago House Music House music borrowed disco’s percussion, with the bass drum on every beat, with hi-hat 8th note offbeats on every bar and a snare marking beats 2 and 4. House musicians added synthesizer bass lines, electronic drums, electronic effects, samples from funk and pop, and vocals using reverb and delay. They balanced live instruments and singing with electronics. Like Disco, House music was “inclusive” (both socially and musically), infuenced by synthpop, rock, reggae, new wave, punk and industrial. Music made for dancing. It was not initially aimed at commercial success. The Warehouse Discotheque that opened in 1977 The Warehouse was the place to be in Chicago’s late-’70s nightlife scene. An old three-story warehouse in Chicago’s west-loop industrial area meant for only 500 patrons, the Warehouse often had over 2000 people crammed into its dark dance foor trying to hear DJ Frankie Knuckles’ magic. In 1982, management at the Warehouse doubled the admission, driving away the original crowd, as well as Knuckles. Frankie Knuckles and The Warehouse "The Godfather of House Music" Grew up in the South Bronx and worked together with his friend Larry Levan in NYC before moving to Chicago. Main DJ at “The Warehouse” until 1982 In the early 80’s, as disco was fading, he started mixing disco records with a drum machines and spacey, drawn out lines.
