SL Benfica v CF PRESS KIT

A Luz, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 - 20:45 CET Group D - Matchday 4

SL Benfica forced a 1-1 draw in the first match with Villarreal CF, and are now looking to utilise home advantage against the UEFA Champions League newcomers, who had never played a Portuguese club before Matchday 3. The Spanish side scored their first goal in the competition in the 18 October meeting, and, after three successive draws, are still searching for their elusive first victory in the competition.

Back in big time •Benfica, the 1961 and 1962 European champions, have returned to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1998/99. They began with a home 1-0 win against LOSC Métropole, followed by a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United FC and the draw at Villarreal. Spanish first for Benfica •The reigning Portuguese champions played the first European game in their history against a Spanish club. In the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs' Cup preliminary round, Benfica were drawn against Sevilla CF, who won 3-1 in Spain before a 0-0 draw in Portugal. Two final successes •The Lisbon club won both their European Cup finals against Spanish clubs – defeating FC Barcelona 3-2 in 1960/61 and Real Madrid CF 5-3 the following year. The Eagles also have an unbeaten against Spanish visitors to protect. No defeats at home •In five previous games against Spanish opposition in Lisbon, Benfica have won two matches and drawn on three occasions.

•The best performance against a Spanish club was undoubtedly the 5-1 defeat administered to Madrid in the quarter-finals of the 1964/65 European Cup. Two goals from Eusébio led the way with José Augusto, Antonio Simões and captain Mário Coluna also on target. Madrid won the return leg 2-1, but the Portuguese team went all the way to the final, where they lost 1-0 to FC Internazionale Milano. Good away record •This is only Villarreal's fourth season in UEFA action, and their first in Europe's premier club competition. The previous campaigns have seen the Spanish side start in the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and in the past two seasons, Villarreal qualified for the UEFA Cup. The El Madrigal club reached the semi-finals in 2003/04 and the quarter-finals last term. •Villarreal have remained unbeaten on their travels in their brief European Cup history. The club reached the UEFA Champions League group stage with a 4-2 aggregate win against Everton FC, whom they overcame 2-1 in both legs. Luciano Figueroa and scored the goals at Goodison Park in the first leg, and Juan Pablo Sorín and

Diego Forlán found the net in Spain. •Then the Spanish team went to LOSC Lille Métropole on Matchday 2 for their first away game in group competition and achieved a goalless draw at the Stade de France. Villarreal will be keen to maintain their unbeaten record and press for their first win, having broken their scoring duck in the competition proper with Juan Román Riquelme's penalty on Matchday 3.

Team facts: Benfica •Benfica are competing in the UEFA Champions League for the third time having missed out on the group stage on each of the past two seasons following elimination in the qualifying round.

•Although five of Benfica's seven finals in the European Champion Clubs' Cup came during the 1960s with two victores, the Portuguese club added two further appearances in the late 1980s albeit in defeat. Their last appearance came in the 1989/90 season when AC Milan prevailed 1-0, while two years previously, PSV defeated the Lisbon-based outfit on penalties after the match had remained scoreless after extra time. The opening penalty scored by PSV that night came from the foot of Ronald Koeman, now coach of Benfica.

•Last season, Benfica won the Portuguese SuperLiga by three points from FC Porto.

•The Portuguese champions got off to a flying start on the opening matchday as Italian striker scored the only goal of the game at home to LOSC Lille Métropole two minutes into added time at the end of the second half. They looked to have built upon that result on Matchday 2 at Old Trafford when Simão's 59th-minute goal cancelled out Ryan Giggs' opening goal six minutes before the break. But United were to have the last laugh as Ruud van Nistelrooij scored the winning goal five minutes from time.

•Despite scoring their first-ever UEFA Champions League goal, Villarreal CF were denied their inaugural victory in the group stage as Benfica battled back to snatch a 1-1 draw on Matchday 3 in Spain. After their first two encounters finished all square, Juan Román Riquelme's 72nd-minute penalty seemed to have earned the Spanish side three valuable points. However, an extraordinary long-range volley from Manuel Fernandes five minutes later restored parity, with Benfica's substitute goalkeeper, 19-year-old Rui Nereu, producing a brilliant debut display to help the away team to a draw. •Benfica need to score four goals to reach 300 in all European Champion Clubs' Cup matches. Currently they have found the net on 296 occasions in 156 matches with 75 wins, 36 draws and 45 defeats with 169 goals conceded. •Overall, the Portuguese side have played 262 matches in UEFA club competitions with 126 wins, 66 draws, 70 defeats, 460 goals scored and 275 conceded.

Team facts: Villarreal •Villarreal have gradually advanced through various UEFA competitions in the past four seasons, reaching the UEFA Intertoto Cup finals in 2002, a competition they would enter in 2003 and 2004 to help sustain a long campaign in the UEFA Cup as qualification for semi-finals and quarter-finals in back-to-back seasons proves. •Their best performance in advance of qualifying for this season's UEFA Champions League came during the 2003/04 season when they qualified from the UEFA Intertoto Cup to eventually play in a UEFA Cup semi-finals only to exit 1-0 on aggregate to Valencia CF. •Villarreal ’s first match in UEFA club competition came on 6 July 2002 when they defeated Icelandic side FH Hafnarfjördur 2-0 in a 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup second round tie. •Villarreal finished third in last season's Spanish Primera División, 19 points behind champions FC Barcelona and 15 points adrift of second-placed Real Madrid CF. Real Betis Balompié followed three points behind in fourth place.

•Thus entering the UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round stage, Villarreal dispatched Everton FC in a 4-2 aggregate success, winning both legs 2-1. Villarreal took the lead in the opening leg on Merseyside through Luciano Figueroa after 27 minutes and though Everton equalised after 42 minutes through James Beattie, the visitors scored the winning goal on the stroke of half-time through Josico. The scoring followed a similar pattern in the return – Villarreal going ahead through Juan Pablo Sorín after 20 minutes, Everton equalising via Mikel Arteta after 69 minutes with the Spanish side going on to win, bagging the winning goal two minutes into stoppage time through Diego Forlán.

•Making their first appearance in the group stage proper against the side with the most matches under their belt in the competition, namely Manchester United FC with 113 before Matchday 1, did not deter Villarreal as they held their English rivals at bay to record a creditable scoreless draw. The same result followed on Matchday 2 at Stade de France against LOSC Lille Métropole.

•Despite scoring their first UEFA Champions League goal, Villarreal were unable to earn their inaugural victory as Portuguese visitors SL Benfica battled back to snatch a 1-1 draw on Matchday 3. •Villarreal have played 51 matches overall in UEFA club competition, winning 24, drawing 21, losing six while scoring 70 times and conceding 31 goals. •Overall in the UEFA Champions League/European Champion Clubs' Cup, they are unbeaten in all of their five matches to date with two wins and three draws. In those

games, the Spanish side have never trailed an opponent.

Match facts: Benfica v Villarreal •The weekend's encounter was the first match between Naval 1º de Maio and SL Benfica in the Portuguese top flight. The 1-1 draw ended Benfica's run of five consecutive league wins. •Goalkeeper Rui Nereu, 19, made his second start for Benfica at the weekend, quickly following his full debut in the Portuguese Cup match against Leixões SC last Wednesday with his first appearance in the Portuguese Liga.

•Rui Nereu will become the third Benfica goalkeeper to start a UEFA Champions League match this season, donning the gloves in the absence of José Moreira and Quim. •Sim ão played every minute of 44 consecutive Portuguese Liga games for Benfica but his impressive run was curtailed by a thigh strain which ruled him out at the weekend. The forward, who turned 26 on Monday, had previously only been sidelined through suspension since returning to his homeland from FC Barcelona in 2001. •By scoring against Naval at the weekend, his ninth goal in nine league matches, Nuno Gomes has now found the net against every side in the Portuguese Liga during his career.

•Nuno Gomes needs two goals to reach 20 in UEFA club competitions. The Portuguese striker is Benfica's top scorer in the UEFA Champions League despite having just five career goals in the tournament.

•Midfield player Giorgios Karagounis has the most UEFA Champions League experience in the Benfica squad, with 31 appearances. •Full -back Léo, sent off in the recent defeat against FC Porto, was deployed as a left- winger for the first time at the weekend.

•After failing to score in their first two league matches, SL Benfica are now to top scorers in the Portuguese Liga with 15 goals from nine matches. •Benfica coach Ronald Koeman should be well-prepared to face Spanish opponents, having spent six seasons with Catalan giants FC Barcelona between 1989 and 1995. Simão and Geovanni are also former Barcelona players. •Liverpool FC players have been adjudged to have strayed off only three times in the opening three matchdays of the competition, one behind SK Rapid Wien, FC Artmedia and Villarreal. Topping the rankings are FC Internazionale Milano (18) and Panathinaikos FC (17). •Rangers FC have committed the most fouls from the first three matchdays with 75 total infringements, nine clear of LOSC Lille Métropole. Avoiding referee interventions the

most have been Villarreal (32), Olympiacos CFP (36) and SK Rapid Wien (38). •Villarreal's draw at Club Atlético de Madrid on Sunday maintained a frustrating record for the visitors. They have never won a league match at the Vicente Calderón, although only one of their five matches there has ended in defeat. •Sunday's meeting with Atlético was also the first time Juan Román Riquelme had come up against since the two played together at CA .

coach José Pekerman has picked Juan Román Riquelme and Juan Pablo Sorín for two forthcoming international friendlies - against England on 12 November and then Qatar four days later. •Diego Forlán and Sebastián Viera will be with the Uruguay squad facing Australia on the same dates in the 2006 FIFA world Cup play-offs. Viera is expected to recover from his shoulder injury in time to feature.

•Diego Forlán was last week presented with the EFE trophy for being the best South American player in the Spanish Primera División.

•Diego Forlán and Juan Román Riquelme have both been listed among the 50 candidates for the France Football's Ballon d'Or award for the European Footballer of the Year, the winner of which will be announced on 28 November.

Competition facts UEFA Champions League: Did you know? •Only Group A in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage contains four domestic league champions from their respective 2004/05 domestic seasons. SK Rapid Wien won the Austrian Bundesliga by a point from Grazer AK. Club Brugge KV won the Belgian first division by three points from RSC Anderlecht. FC Bayern München won the German Bundesliga by 14 points from FC Schalke 04, while Juventus won the Italian championship by seven points from AC Milan, with FC Internazionale Milano and a further seven and 17 points behind.

•This season Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to ten, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their ninth consecutive appearance, one ahead of Arsenal FC. •In addition, Manchester United have qualified for the knockout stages of the competition for the each of the past nine seasons, winning the European Champion Clubs' Cup at the end of the 1998/99 campaign. The English club have also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons.

•Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only Real Betis Balompié did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2004/05 season.

•Six clubs competing in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season with two rounds preceding the group stage. AC Milan were beaten finalists (to ), while Club Brugge, PSV, Rangers FC and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle to enter the group stage. •Defending champions Liverpool FC entered the competition at the first qualifying round stage having not secured one of the automatic qualification slots available for finishing in the top four places in last season's English Premiership, but they are not the only club to have played six matches to advance to the group stage - a feat shared by FC Artmedia. Three clubs also made it from the second qualifying round: Rapid Wien, Anderlecht and FC Thun. •Both Arsenal and Schalke remain the only two clubs among this season's participants never to have played a UEFA Champions League qualifying-round match. At the start of the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League all of Arsenal's 68 matches were restricted to the group stage and beyond while Schalke's six matches had come in the first group stage of the 2001/02 season, their sole previous participation before this campaign.

•Only two of the former winners of the competition since it commenced in the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Marseille (1992/93) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97).

Head coach profiles Ronald Koeman Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking up the vacant position at Portuguese champions SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian Giovanni Trapattoni. Ajax's fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the ArenA, winning a domestic double in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV Eindhoven as the Netherlands' top team, and Koeman resigned after the Amsterdam side were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by AJ Auxerre. Benfica fans may prefer to forget that Koeman was a member of the PSV Eindhoven side that overcame the Eagles in the 1988 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, the libero converting the opening kick in PSV's 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory after 120 goalless minutes in .

Koeman was admired not only as an accomplished sweeper but also as a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ball that he scored FC Barcelona's winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father's old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA European Championship - the country's first and only major international honour. That triumph on home soil capped a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barça in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles.

Manuel Pellegrini Manuel Pellegrini was chosen to replace Benito Floro after the latter's resignation from Villarreal CF in February 2004, but had to wait three months before assuming control of first-team affairs as Floro's assistant Francisco García took charge for the remainder of that season.

Once installed, the Chilean proved massively successful, guiding the club to a fourth- place finish in the Primera División to earn UEFA Champions League qualification for the first time. Villarreal also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup having won the UEFA Intertoto Cup for the second successive year in summer 2004. Pellegrini's gift lies in getting the best from players who have failed to hit the heights at their previous clubs. Juan Román Riquelme and Diego Forlán, disappointing at FC Barcelona and Manchester United FC respectively, have flourished at El Madrigal, the latter finishing as Spain's leading scorer in 2004/05 with 25 goals. Pellegrini is a much-travelled coach enjoying his first stint in Europe. He coached nine clubs in Chile, Ecuador and Argentina, including giants CA River Plate, before being lured across the Atlantic. At Villarreal he has introduced a large South American presence, including Riquelme, Forlán, captain Juan Pablo Sorín and striker Luciano Figueroa. A total of eleven players in the club's UEFA Champions League squad hail from Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia or Ecuador.

He started refereeing in 1984, oversaw his first Belgian top-flight match in 1995, before receiving his FIFA badge in 1998. The same year he officiated at his first UEFA tournament, the UEFA European Under-16 Championship in Scotland.

He then participated at the 2001 UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup in Italy and quickly graduated to UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup duties, continuing his rise up the refereeing ladder with his appointment as one of four specialist fourth officials at UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal. Domestic news Villarreal labour to make their point (Sunday, 30 October 2005) Diego Forlán scored a last-gasp header to secure Villarreal CF a point at Club Atlético de Madrid, but overall it was a disappointing weekend for the UEFA Champions League Group D contenders on their travels. LOSC Lille Métropole and SL Benfica also had to settle for 1-1 away draws, while Manchester United FC were heavily defeated at Middlesbrough FC.

Olympique de Marseille 1-1 LOSC Lille Métropole Lille returned to full strength to gain a draw at Marseille, having fielded a relative reserve side in Wednesday's French League Cup 2-0 win against AS Saint-Etienne. The visitors went into the break a goal behind against the UEFA Cup contenders following Spaniard Sergio Koke's close-range effort after 29 minutes.

Lille coach Claude Puel acted at half-time by replacing left-back Milivoje Vitakić with Geoffrey Dernis and the move paid off six minutes into the second half when Milenko Vitakić put the ball past .

"Our first half was very poor," said Puel, who remains without captain Stéphane Dumont as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. "But I was pleased with the way the team responded in the second half. I want to see that same spirit against Manchester United."

Middlesbrough FC 41 Manchester United FC United suffered their heaviest league reverse in more than 18 months at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, leaving them 13 points behind Premiership leaders Chelsea FC. Their last threegoal defeat was in the derby against Manchester City FC, who won 41 in March 2004. Goalkeeper misjudged a speculative Gaizka Mendieta shot in the second minute as Middlesbrough took an early lead. Defender Rio Ferdinand was outmanoeuvred by for the second, and Ayegbeni Yakubu made it three from the penalty spot before halftime after Kieran Richardson tugged Stuart Parnaby's shirt. Mendieta added a fourth before substitute Cristiano Ronaldo headed United's 1,000th Premiership goal in lowkey fashion during added time. Gary Neville (groin), (knee), Roy Keane (foot) and Ryan Giggs (cheekbone), Ole Gunnar Solskjær (knee) and (hamstring) were all out for United, while Wes Brown replaced Ferdinand as a late substitute after returning from achilles trouble. "It was a shocking performance," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson. "We conceded some terrible goals and we can't afford do that with what we're trying to achieve. On that form, we couldn't beat anybody. Defensively, we were very disappointing. But we will get the right response all right, that is without question."

A. Naval 1º Maio 11 SL Benfica

Two great goals from Simão had given Benfica a 21 victory against Leixões SC in the Portuguese Cup at Estádio do Bessa on Wednesday but the Benfica captain later went off with a thigh injury that kept him out of Saturday's game against Naval 1º Maio. Missing his influence, Benfica were held to a draw.

Besides Simão, coach Ronald Koeman was also without goalkeepers José Moreira (knee) and Quim (groin strain), out for six months and one week respectively. Brazilian winger Geovanni was omitted due to personal problems, but Petit and Nuno Assis both returned. Léo and João Pereira replaced Simão and Geovanni. Benfica began well but could not convert their chances, while Andrei Kariaka and Nuno Gomes faded after a bright first half as heavy rain took its toll on the pitch. Bruno Fogaça scored for Naval in the 71st minute after a fast counterattack down the right. The Portuguese champions reacted swiftly and Nuno Gomes equalised ten minutes from time, after some great work by Nélson on the right wing.

Koeman said: "We felt the absence of Simão. It is only natural. Nevertheless, we played very well and we dominated the entire match. We deserved more than just a draw, but we did not take advantage of the opportunities we created. It was difficult because of the heavy pitch."

Club Atlético de Madrid 11 Villarreal CF

Diego Forlán scored a lastgasp header to secure Villarreal a share of the spoils against Atlético in the Spanish capital on Sunday evening in a match which saw both teams reduced to ten men. Manuel Luis Pellegrini's side had been trailing for much of the encounter after José Zahínos had broken the deadlock on four minutes and Gonzalo Rodríguez's dismissal seven minutes later left Villarreal with a mountain to climb. It got worse before it got better for the visitors, whose goalkeeper Sebastián Viera was forced off with a shoulder injury on the halfhour mark. Mariano Barbosa replaced him, and pulled off a series of stunning saves before Forlán clinched a late point to add to the three they picked up in the 32 win against Real Betis Balompié on Wednesday. Rightback Jan Kromkamp returned after missing that game in Seville, but Marcos Senna was only fit enough for a place on the bench, while Antonio Guayre remains sidelined. Pellegrini said: "We didn't give up today. Things weren't looking good when we were 10 down with a oneman deficit but we introduced [Juan Manuel] Peña because the key to getting back into the game was not allowing Atlético grab a second goal. This result will provide a confidence boost for our meeting with Benfica."

UEFA information The week in UEFA •Record sales levels The UEFA Champions League remains not only a top-notch sporting competition, but also a high-quality commercial attraction. The next three seasons between 2006 and 2009 will produce record sales levels from a buoyant market and will also introduce new partners. The sales process, conducted on UEFA's behalf by its partners TEAM Marketing, has already seen the awarding of the broadcast rights in all the major European markets, with the full lineup of six top level sponsorship partners to be confirmed shortly.

"This successful picture underlines the attractiveness of the UEFA Champions League in its current 13-matchweek format," said UEFA. "The financial return to UEFA and the participating clubs for the 2006-09 period will comfortably outstrip the previous record of over CHF1bn per season, which was achieved when the previous 17-matchweek format was in place."

UEFA revamped the Champions League format for the 2003/04 season, introducing one group stage and a 16-team knockout phase to bring added excitement.

The mainstream broadcaster partners for the 2006-09 period in the major European markets are: UK: ITV and BSkyB / ESP: Antena 3 and Canal+ ITA: RAI (free-to-air), Mediaset (DTT) and Sky Italia (DTH) FRA: TF1 and Canal+ / GER: Premiere (free-to-air and pay TV) NED: NOS and UPC / Scandinavia: TV3 and Viasat GRE: ERT and Supersport. •Media hotel in Paris Fifty years after the first European Champion Clubs' Cup final was played at the old Parc des Princes, the final of Europe's leading club competition is returning to Paris. It will be played on Wednesday 17 May, kicking off at 20.45 at the Stade de France in Paris Saint-Denis. Press kits on Matchday 4 include the link to the hotel booking form for this season's UEFA Champions League final. The fact we are highlighting this so early in the campaign is a clear indication of how difficult it might be to obtain accommodation in Paris next May, bearing in mind that the city is a prime tourist destination.

The Holiday Inn La Villette has provisionally reserved rooms for media representatives who intend to cover the final. The hotel has 182 rooms with full facilities (including direct-dial telephones) plus fitness and business centres and a private garage. If you wish to make a booking you are urged to take action in good time. The deadline for reserving rooms at the Holiday Inn La Villette is Thursday 15 December. General competition information Competition summary UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992. •Key dates: The draw for the first knockout round will take place in Nyon on 16 December with matches being played on 21/22 February and 7/8 March. The draws for the quarter-finals (to be played on 28/29 March and 4/5 April), semi-finals (18/19 & 25/26 April) and final are scheduled for 17 March 2006. This season’s showpiece will be played at the Stade de France, Paris on Wednesday 17 May 2006.

•Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match.

Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.
